maybe you should stick to horror movies, so when it's over you're just glad to be alive.

Man, I hate watching pro Starcraft matches. All the players have more APM, make better decisions, and have more fans than I do. Every time I watch progamers, I feel like shit for playing like I do. How does anyone feel good after watching pro Starcraft?

if the real world was as cool as movies we wouldn't watch movies. the purpose of film, tv, etc is for us to see stuff that's entertaining. if you feel like shit or feel crappy after watching a movie it likely stems from your disappointment with your life, not from the world in general being worse than the movie world. edit: i apologize if this comes off as an insult, i say this with as little judgment as possible, i don't mean to say your life is shit or something. but if you really feel this bad after movies, you are probably unhappy for other reasons.

for example, after avatar a lot of people became depressed (there was a thread on a forum with hundreds of pages), and its not because avatar was so awesome or something, but more because these people were just unhappy and avatar helped to compound that already existing depression.

No bullshit, I just watched Avatar last weekend (finally out on dvd, 3D movies are all dubbed in japanese here) and the only thing I took away from the movie was how stupid it was that the mech suits had big knives.

If you want to a watch a movie that shows the world for what it is trying watching Baraka, shot in 24 countries on six continents(words arent needed in this film) or you can maybe try movies like "Twilight Samurai" to see how the life for a normal samurai wasnt as "awesome" as everyone thinks.

It sounds more like you love movies, not like you hate them. Perhaps you could give an example of a film that made you feel this way and explain the ways in which you wish our world more resembled its setting.

And what is your reaction to documentaries?

A co-worker of mine was incredibly depressed and lonely a long time ago; so he went and saw Mystic River. This did not improve the situation.

To me, movies normally rather inspire feeling. They make you realize or rekindle something about yourself as basically they are reflection of thougths and feeligns of others. I'm rarely touched by movies anymore (unlike in my teenage years, when I was more receptive and my feelings were more volatile), but when I am, it's when I am able to emphasise with the feelings displayed. It has not eluded me how the only movies that really manage to touch me these days are ones that have do to with women and cover a specific angle that I can recognize. For instance, I was Before Sunset, and it was really powerful for me because I got it completely. I have certainly been desensitized, but I think that I also just realize that they are not that amazing. Romance movies are mostly not the the least romantic, but instead very superficial, presenting the people in them as fairly boring. Horror movies mostly seem mindless, and I often find my mind drifting through scenes of the most horrendous acts.

Sometimes, though, I have feelings similar to you. When movies become an escape, an alternate reality, it can present scenarios that you want to delve into. When you fall in love with movie characters or feel comfortable in the safety of a specific movie universe, you might feel a longing to be there instead of where you are. Mostly, though, movies are really vapid, and the movies that I enjoy are often those that are able to arise deep feelings in me. When you find such movie, you really appreciate it, especially as it might help bridge certain feelings with others, giving you a common platform for understanding something. It happens seldomly that movies arouse deep feelings in me, and I'd definitely say that books are a much stronger medium here. I think it's because when you use your imagination, you are more likely to refer the things that you see to yourself, not having the same distance as you might when watching movies. However, I am very much my own, often entrenched in my own mind, and mostly find inspiration from within. I can imagine that if people feel their life should be in a certain way, and are guided by the movies in this matter, they might feel bad about not being able to replicate those experiences or patterns of behaviour.

I'd say that mostly I'm just happy that there is more to life than what we see in the movies.
I am not sure what to say

I can see where you're coming from, but I have a slightly different reason. I've started hating(or maybe just severely reduced enjoyment?) watching stuff bc it feels like the author/director is trying too hard to impress you or force a moral lesson on the viewer.

Like someone telling you "this is whats cool: ..." , or "this guy is noble and tough, see, look at him do this: ...". Like a telemarketer constantly trying to sell you on something..

So yea, idk instead of feeling super desirable and better than our world, it often feels like teleporting into someone's wet dream. Maybe its just me though, a lot of people I talk to dont feel the same way, and I probably didnt explain it totally coherently haha :D

Pandora's retarded magnetic storm things means that, basically, anything too electronic won't work. Everything is powered by hydraulics, chemicals, incendiaries, or biology. Obviously this property of Pandora was created for exactly this reason but you can't blame them for trying.
But why?
