This will be my first blog, though I've been lurking on this forum for nearly a year. I'm not an active poster on this forum, but that will hopefully change^^ I've done a lot of thinking today about my life and been taking a few looks into the past.
I'm the type of person, who doesn't follow that much in sports. But when heard about e-sport, for about a year ago, I was interested from the start! I did some research about it and I started to find myself watching some commentary of Starcraft matches, done by Diggity, on youtube. I remember I had a big smile on my face, because I always had Starcraft on my mind, since I was a young boy. I followed many of his works and suddenly I got here (: Here I found all the talk about Starcraft. I saw all the threads, the VODs, Streams etc. I love it and I now know that this is the gaming community I want to be a part of.
But the thing is that, last time i was in an online gaming community was when I played the MMORPG, Guild Wars. During Factions in the game, I was a huge PvP'er and I was in a guild, where I had a good relationsship to everyone. The guild did pretty good, when the celestial tournament was up, but I don't remember our final placement. Though after a few months, people lost interest in the guild and started to do other things.
I still have contact to a few of those people, but the social aspect started to go down (among playing online with people I don't know). I didn't talk to people like I used to, like only using very short sentences. I also stopped using vent, because i started to feel very uncomfortable with it. I don't really know what could have caused this, but I'm going to change this now, and replace the fun I had in Guild Wars with Starcraft. I know there is a big difference in the games, but Starcraft has always been in my heart.
I'm a big gamer, and i play various of games from fps, to rts and I like to play online. But now, I want to communicate people and not just play with them. You could maybe call it a way to start finding friends, but don't worry, I am not the lonely type in RL.
I can't wait to get acces to Starcraft II and compete against others. Both for fun, but also for getting better! (:

You have a good attitude man but let me warn you first:
STARCRAFT IS THE HARDEST GAME IN THE FUCKING WORLD. People have played this game so much and for so long that the first 20 minutes of the game is practically muscle memory. It takes years to become a C- player, which most veterans consider an EXTREMELY low level of play.
Starcraft, however, has given me countless fond memories of friendship, gaming and hilarious circumstances. You are correct in thinking there is a huge social aspect in the game and with your attitude I think people will be willing to help you learn more about the game.
Be aware: good SC players fuckin hate newbs :D
GL
p.s.: you are only 11 years late !!

I agree with this post except for the "years to become a c- player" part, which is very inaccurate.

It seems that way :D I guess it took me that long because no one ever taught me and I didn't train on a serious "train to be gosu" level. I just kinda played and played until experience took over and all of a sudden I became way better.

Dick waving contest <3
I mean it is kinda depressing for newbies when you tell them that they suck because they are still stuck at D level after 6 months whereas there is nothing to be ashamed of.

I played Guild Wars too! Cept I stopped cuz I never wanted to spend my money on so many expansions. Maybe I'll play a little with GW2 comes out.
Patience will get you through practice, but persistence will get you farther Have fun! SC2 will be great, I have hope.

Thanks for the compliment. (:
I do agree that Starcraft is one of the hardest games, no discussion about that. It will be hard to get used to play it online, than just against simple bots. Better late than never, I guess
But yeah, there is still a long way from reading all the strategies to master them in the game. Will try my best, to learn from my mistakes and improve (:

Welcome Hyldig - if you are a newer player of the game and has not yet acquired so many skills, there is, on iccup, a channel called iccup trainning channel. Ppl there are very friendly, i think that will be something for you. Hope to play with you some day

Thanks for the hint, though I think it may be too late to start on SC:BW.
Atm. I'm more focussed in SCII and therefore less focus on SC:BW (:

Dont be too sure of this. I think it will take a lot of time before SC2 will get interesting. There are various reasons like the Blizzard/Kespa dispute, balancing issues together with a broodwar-like expansion that could come in the future (which prob would come after the 2 singleplayer expansions).
It is for reasons of this that i have reason to hope that SC.BW will never die or at least not die to SC2.

BW is still the best competitive game out there even though SCII is so much fun and all. It will stick around just because it has a legend status. About leveling in BW I'd have to agree with Hypnosis. If you take a casual approach the progress is painfully slow but rewarding and fun. I never had many on-line friends just because no one i knew played BW and wasn't that much on-line in the first place. Those few that I became friends with through BW then just suddenly disappeared. It's kind of sad that I play Starcraft from 98' and no one that i hung out with till 2003-4 even plays or shows up anymore. And that is the biggest thing I really like about SCII. It will hopefully bring back some old faces. Hyldig hope you'll have some good experience playing BW and SCII later on and make lots of people who share same interest as you.

Yeah it will probably take years if you have no gaming experience at all (including game theory knowledge like chess experience), but if you have gaming experience and dedication, it should go much faster. With proper training a friend of mine with a CS background got B- in about 5 months.

After 2 years and 500+ games on iccup, I'm still a D+. Not that I don't know builds, but my mechanics never improve.
