So one of my rather close friends is a slight hypochondriac and worries constantly about his health in somewhat of a comical fashion. He's pretty fit, but he worries that slight chest pains he gets after a hour long run is signs that he has heart disease. If I ran for an hour, I'm pretty sure you'd find me gasping my way down to the gates of Hades... since the stairway to Heaven was too long and steep. Recently, he's started to worry about his nasal passages... and whether they are all that they should be. So he looked up nasal health and found this guy:
For some reason, that just got him... and he got one of those kettle things and started doing it. I suppose I should add that he's a bit of an odd-ball. I posted one of his emails to me earlier, under the title "A Brief Treatise into the Nature of Dames" or something like that. Anyways, he's really taken to it... and I really had no idea that this existed. I had heard about it on the Office where Dwight mentions a teapot can be used that way but I always assumed he was joking.
So I suppose my question to TL is Do you irrigate your nasal passages? Does it really help?
I've also heard through him a habit that his ex used to do with her son. When the baby's nose was stuffed up, instead of letting it run and wipe it like I assumed you would, she would put her mouth over the baby's nose and suck the snot out. Apparently, the kid really enjoyed it, but I just couldn't imagine anyone doing that. If you're wondering whether she spat or swallowed, he didn't specify...
I have done it, but I have a dust allergy. Exercise, cleaning, warm showers, and occasionally salt water in the nose works better than $1,500\year Nasonex (American healthcare system, lol).
i had to do it for a month after getting a septoplasty to stop bloodclots from binding with my healing nose tissue. it was extremely unpleasenet at first (mostly due to my nose being so sensitive to pain that a kleenex resting on it was excruciating). but after awhile it wasnt so bad.
depends on the day, if your nose is stuffed it wont properly go in 1 nostril and out the other and it feels like your drowning or waterboarding yourself.
But seriously, I don't think you need to irrigate your nasal passages unless you have some specific sort of irritation / medical reason. The nose has mucus for this.

and wikipedia says you can just cup your hands and snort water, which i do sometimes in the shower if i have a cold
As wikipedia states, I just cup my hands with water. It does help when your nose it clogged or dry. It's probably better for you than blowing super hard when you have bad nasal congestion.
Works for me. I use it when my sinuses are triggering up and all that nonsense. I used to flush once a day, as it just made my nasal passages feel better, but nowadays I only flush/rinse when I need it.

Eh... it doesn't hurt him to be worried about his health. He probably should calm down a bit... but I'm not too worried about his mental health all too much.
