I have i7 920 and ATI 5770, could my PC handle it if I would overclock my CPU to 3.8GHZ and GPU to 900mhz/1330mhz?

My PSU is: Corsair 550W

My RAM is corsair XMS3 1x3gb

Just look at the temperatures and use Prime 95 to test for CPU stability. Enable Error checking in the menu. If your cpu survives a 1-2 hour test without errors and if the load temperature isn't too high then it's fine.
Oracle comes in, Scvs go down, never a miscommunication.

Yes, but not on the stock heatsink for your cpu.
Make sure you have good cooling in your case too.

Yeah, I just did the test, passed with no errors but my CPU was about 80 degrees.. is that normal?

without prime95, my CPU is about 45C

you need to error check for much longer. i would say at least 5 hours.

80C sounds high. i think the tjmax for intel processors is usually 100C but i would definitely try to keep it lower than 80C but i'm not sure it will actually cause problems.

P.S. just leave it on while you sleep so you dont have to wait for it :D

the processor will stop itself if it reaches a certain temperature !

yeah it'll stop itself at around 105C

make sure you run Prime95 for at least 6-8 hours imo. 80C is fine, but a bit on the high side imo. What are your volts?

Your processors will probably have errors before then anyways, and prime95 stops running on those cpu's when they have errors

I suggest turning off Turbo Mode because it could cause stability issues later on in tasks that are not multithreaded.

Your voltage looks fine. Not sure why your temps are high.

Yeah, maybe it because I have turned my fans to silent-mode on my bios settings...

ionno what his cooler is but turbo mode should be off for an oc.

About ocing your 5770 i suggest using msi afterburner in conjunction with kombuster run kombuster and find the max of your memory first then bring up your core till stable s memory is the main issue with the 5770.

That's or evga precision will do.

most times you can push that memory to about 1400 usually a bit less then that. but i like kombuster it's good to see hz on the core and memory becuase it goes down to the 10th place.

Really you have a noctua and getting those temps esp that cooler i suggest you may want to take a look at if you're cooler is properly set and if you have to much thermal paste.

im gonna be overclocking my i7-920 soon on my ASUS motherboard..but ive never overclocked before. ive done a bit of reading and found out about the ASUS turboV software..and the ROG connect... it looks a bit complicated..

would it be easier to go with the old BIOS settings method instead?

TurboV is an easy 3.6ish ghz overclock, but it will ramp up the voltages to the CPU far past the required amount (and therefore generate more heat)

Never use software to overclock your CPU, simply retarded.

Bios is the way to go, and is VERY simple. First set your multiplier to either 21x or 19x, since the i7's favor odd multipliers when overclocking. Then, just increase BCLK in increments of 10 until you blue screen or crash. After about 160 BCLK run at least 10 minutes of prime95 to make sure you won't crash, before you do another increase. Once you do crash, increase your VCORE by 0.25 until you can boot into windows again.

If VCORE alone is not giving you stability, set your ioh and ich to 1.2, your vdimm to 1.65, your cpu pll to 1.88, and your qpi/uncore to 1.35.

^Those settings are 100% safe. Your qpi/uncore might need a little adjusting up or down if you are getting the blue screen code 124. These settings will probably guarantee a 4.0 if you have a d0 stepping, and your VCORE should not be going past 1.35 if even that.

@OP, GPU overclocking is the easiest out their, but really depends on the card itself. Just download MSI afterburner. 900mhz on a 5770 is a joke for an overclock, all reference models should be able to hit 950/1350 on 1250 voltage(100% safe up to 1350 where it locks). My MSI R5770 Hawks can run at 1050/1400 @ 1300 volts, and pass 20 minutes of furmark(gpu stability program).

Thanks @superbabosheki.. My i7 920 c0 is currently at 3.4ghz maxing out at 70C with prime95 and no voltage changes.. how high do you think I could get my 920 if I change my voltage as per your suggestions?

Really 1400 on the memory? did you add headsinks to the memory located on the back as i think that would be the first to go, it's what i enviably had to do for my friends 5770 hawk as he couldn't get it past 1345 stable after that it would randomly produce an error like an hour in was good enough for a benchmark or suicide run but not for everyday use.

Depends on the 920 and your motherboard, the 920 it's not a super consistent chip in terms of overclocking performance it's why they got out the 930 which is one.

the 920 may not be super consistent in the temp ranges between the cores but it is one of the best chips on the market due to it's ability to OC so well. you can clock safely up to 4.1 ghz on AIR. with a WC rig, you can push it WAY past that. also, if you want real help, post in forums like www.xtremesystems.org or www.overclockers.com... you won't get much help with overclocking here. watercooling makes a ginormous difference in cooling potential btw.
Is it in you?
