Summer is quickly upon us and a slew of members are graduating college. I am going to graduate this May from The University of Texas at Austin. After graduation, I plan to move to Texarkana, Tx to start my full-time career with a sales company.
Since I am embarking on a new saga of my life, I feel it necessary to upgrade my current setup.
Current setup:
36" tube television Brown TV foldout stand
Yes, it is true, my current set up is sad panda...
However, here is what I plan to get. Please share you opinions/thoughts/experiences.
46" LCD (/w VGA hookup) Love Seat Couch Tv Stand PS3
Research: I concluded that LCDs are on the downward pricing slope. The newer LED models are the next hot thing but I prefer to not be an early adopter. My budget for the LCD is $800. Is this impossible for what I want it for?
LCD TV
Needs: PC input, PS3 gaming, Movie, TV Possible Units:
Amazon.com Total: $769(tax+shipping inclu, refurbished model) Model: Samsung 46"

The Samsung model has an added USB interface feature, so I can just hookup my HD and run movies (hopefully they play AVI format). My only reservation is that it is open box and has slight cosmetic damage in the back.
TV Stands
Tv Stands cost an arm and a leg these days it seems. Prices range from $50-$500. I really like to mount my LCD in my new apartment however, that will probably cost me my security deposit. There seems to be TV Stands with a spine mounts, however they cost upwards of $200. T_T
I have decided to visit Walmart and Target to pick one up for sub $100. Is there any other places you guys would recommend?
Couch
LINK Walmart $149
Instead of getting a new dekstop PC to hook up to my LCD setup, is there a better option? I have a laptop I don't normally use and I don't mind hooking up the VGA. However, how will I get the sound to get sent to the TV speakers? Has anyone heard of the Windows Media Centers?
Please share your thoughts and advice. I don't want to overspend but I don't want to end up with a crappy setup either. Thanks.

HDMI out or DisplayPort out of a computer can carry audio data along with the video data. HDMI out is much more common at this point; anyhow, both TVs you listed have multiple HDMI input ports. That way the TV can display the video and play back the audio over the speakers.
A word of warning if you want to use an HDTV for gaming, though: most all HDTVs lag pretty bad. Any time the TV accepts an input signal, it spends some 50-200 ms (really, the amount varies a lot by the model and may be more or less) processing it to make it look better. So there's a noticeable latency between when the TV gets a signal and displays it. That means that the state of the TV will be significantly behind the state of the game you're playing on the PS3; when you input commands based on visual indicators on the TV, they will come out "late" in terms of the actual game. i.e. bad input delay
Many HDTVs have a "game mode" option that eliminates some of the processing, but the latency is often still very noticeable. Many HDTVs get rid of pretty much all the processing delay only from certain input ports like the VGA. This is because it assumes the input is from a computer, and a computer user would be annoyed by huge input latency. Input delay is worse if the TV has to do upscaling or deinterlacing as well, but that won't be an issue if the input is from a current-gen console.
If you're playing a rhythm game, sports game, shooting game, or fighting game, this is a big factor. (edit: okay, to be fair, modern rhythm games allow you to calibrate the video/audio sync to compensate for the HDTV latency) For many other games, it may not make such a difference and bother you.

At least buy some decent speakers with that TV. Built-in ones simply won't do it justice. You can pick up a cheap 5.1 receiver, 2 bookshelf speakers, and a 10" sub for about $300. If you're living in an apartment, you might wanna ditch the sub though.

I actually have an old stereo system. I hope to hook that up with the LCD to save myself $300 for new speakers.
On another note, I pulled the trigger on the Samsung. Final price came in at $769 shipped.
