Buying New Laptop: Sony Outlet?

Hi, looking for TL help!

I want a laptop with the following:

Budget: 1.5-2k
Portable, so 13-14'' screen (and decent battery)
Capable of running Left4Dead2, Starcraft2 (decently)

I was looking at this site, the Sony Outlet
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchCatalog?storeId=10151&langId=-1&catalogId=10551&Ntk=&Ntx=&Ntt=&N=4294961692&searchType=outlet&contentType=PRODUCT&No=&Nao=&rpp=15&Ns=Prod.Price.SS|1&Nf=&productFilter=&minPrice=&maxPrice=&navigation=

and some of the Sony Z series seem to fit what I'm looking for. However, I do want to confirm that what I'm buying is worth the buck. My current laptop is a 3yr old Vaio, and as it has no graphics card no games for me - hopefully my new lappy can!

Looking to buy something pretty soon so I appreciate any replies!

too easy

Um, Asus makes laptops for Sony last time I checked. Here are some fantastic laptops.
Had my friend buy this one and he loves it.
This one includes a 64GB SSD and you can play SC2 on ultra at full res. This one is ginormous btw.

I would look at Dell, Asus, and Toshiba when looking at laptops. Stay away from HP, Sony, etc. I recommend Asus because they have great customer service + products + pricing.

Also, I used to own the Sony AR series laptop and bought it for 3k. It was a waste of money. Sony laptops are WAY WAY WAY overpriced. Please don't consider buying them.
Is it in you?

Definitely not worth the money you're paying. Go to Xoticpc.com and configure a laptop to your likings.

I would also stay away from Sony's. The only advantage they used to have was form factor, especially for smaller/lighter notebooks before netbooks came around, but right now I see no reason to get one.

As someone with a 17" Gateway (which has held up very well and was worth it for the price), I think that 18.4" Toshiba is over the line. This is manageable but pushing it.

I'd look at Asus or MSI, if you can find them.

They both contradict themselves.

What about the Alienware m11x?
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5548&p=4

It's the only gaming notebook in that class, and it runs MW2/ME2/RE5/L4D2 perfectly well, so I'm sure SC2 will be fine.

yeah Pakje, I guess it is an oxymoron

most of the time the laptop will be attached to a monitor / external keyboard and mouse but obviously taken out sometimes

Jibba - there are no other laptops similar to that? That definitely seems like exactly what I'm looking for, and seems like a bargain priced at 1k

My recommendation is to regularly check http://www.logicbuy.com/subcategorydeals/13/Computers/119/Laptops.aspx?filter=hottest

Find laptops that fall within your specs, then do more research on individual laptops. It is kind of amusing the percentage of recommendations for ginormous 17inch laptops when the OP wanted something portable.

Asus laptops are generally well spec'ed (they are usually the first to adopt newest GPU/CPU etc), but I don't really care for their aesthetics or build quality.

If you are willing to get a 15-inch laptop, check out the HP Envy 15 (can be had for $950 now!). It comes with a good GPU and is quite thin and light for its screen size. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the major vendors (Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple, Sony) have good gaming notebooks with 13/14-inch screens.

Nope, at an 11" screen it's basically what people consider a netbook, and you're not going to get gaming power out of any netbook, and probably nothing similar until the 15" area.

EDIT: Actually, your VAIO Z is the only other small notebook that's close, but it's a bigger laptop and much more expensive.

I suggest you look at slightly bigger laptops (15 inch) if you want some decent gaming performance.

I was hoping for something ~13'' because I wanted a reasonable resolution (for poker tables). Apparently there is a Vaio out that has an insane resolution (something like 1920x1080 in a 13'' laptop) but that model costs like 3-4k and obviously not possible. I barely find my current 13'' portable enough so a little hesitant to move into the 15'' range...

I guess everyone is saying the Vaio is a scam. I do like their aesthetics but yeah am open to other options.

check out the envy15 2nd gen with the $450-off coupon. sure it may be 15" not 14, but it's 1" thick and weighs just 5lb. also comes with 1080p, and iirc you can get it under a grand. if it were here in canada i'd jump on it in a heartbeat.
it packs great performance, decent battery life, looks very nice, etc.

well you can check out envy15 gen1 in a retail store (best buy?), as for gen2 only the insides changed. you can see if it's portable enough for you.
(\o/)  If you want it, you find a way. Otherwise you find excuses. No exceptions.

asus for laptops 100% over for the rest of my life

im such an asus fanboy

edit - i don't think any gaming laptop is going to fall in the "portable" category, you're gonna have to go with a 15in minimum imo
You're pretty when I'm drunk.

13" 1920x1080? I'd like to see this.

I think certain Vaio's, including the Vaio Z are great laptops. Sure, it is more expensive, but it is far lighter than any other laptop with similar performance, and far faster than any other laptop with similiar portability.

If you really want < 14", then maybe look into a desktop + netbook combo?

I built my desktop for $1000 CAD so if your budget is $1.5~2k, then you can easily afford the combo.
My desktop is i5-750, gtx 260, 4 gb of ram, etc. which can run sc2 on the highest settings easily

Only advantage, in my experience, with Sony laptops is indeed that the screens are among the best compared to others such as Dell, HP, or Toshiba. They do cost more though.
When SC2 came for BW, I cried. Now LoL/Dota2 comes for SC2, and I laugh. \o/
