If you want to put together a statistical basis to prove that Romanians are no more likely to miss sarcasm than anyone else, by all means go ahead. If it comes back true, I will never post about it again. Until that day, I will have to cite empirical evidence.

omg!!! anyway, op, u should definitely go to a night club! even if you dont know the romanian language, there`s no problem at all. Ladies find it attractive that you're a foreigner, and you`ll find out that a lot of romanians know english. Also no one cares about under-age around here, so don`t worry.

I'm not sure if this is trying to be funny in some way or a serious invitation to Romania =)

Here's an argument diagram of my post. + Show Spoiler +MC: The romanian meme should be stopped SC1: The cons of the romanian meme outweigh the pros SC2: The meme derails discussion SC3: The use of the meme is usually unfunny SC4: The meme is disliked by a majority Romanian members SC5: The meme is discrimination P1: This thread P2: The use of the meme is usually unwitty P3: Unwitty uses of memes are unfunny P4: Personal impression from many threads P5:Definitions of discrimination on the Web: unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice P6: Romanians are a group P7: Romanians are prejudiced for not detecting sarcasm
From your posts it seems that you disagree with SC3 and in a way SC5.
For SC3, you haven't expressed why you disagree. It can be difficult to say why something is funny and why something isn't. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on humour. However, that's weighed in the pros and cons.
As for SC5, you don't think discrimination matters on TL, and you think I need to make a statistical basis to prove it. I think that it would be more wise for you to form your own firm foundation for your discriminations than for me to disprove it. I don't want to waste time when obviously the burden of proof is on you to prove that 75% of the time Romanians are the posters who miss sarcasm.
To expand on SC4: I could be totally wrong about it but this is my personal opinion. If it's not too impractical, I could try to get their opinions by making a thread (obviously no poll, just comments) or by mass PMing.
Edit: The argument diagram is OF my post, not from it. Edit2: Mislabled my argument diagram. Let me fix this. Edit3: Should be good now. Edit4 (so much later): SC1 should read: The cons of the romanian meme outweigh the pros. Not the other way around.

Your Premises do not support you conclusion, and i will show why.
For starters, premise 3 is innacurate, meme's do not require wit to be funny, unless your suggesting that "you dawg, and all your base" amongst many are examples of wit, then you really cant support that claim at all
I feel chill dealt with Premise 4, someone not liking being teased has never been good reason to stop, no one likes being teased, you just need to deal with it
Premise 5 is flawed, the key word here being -unfair- as in, unjustified. If for example, i say that all chinese people are bad people because they are chinese, that is unjustified, and i am being discriminative. However, if i say, said that forigners are worse than koreans at sc1, or indeed if i was a korean, and said that any particular nation of people were bad at starcraft, im not being discriminative, im just being accurate. And as with most stereotypes, they are based on truth, lots of romanians have shown a lack of understanding of sarcasm, thus, it is founded, and not discrimination. sure there are exceptions, but that doesnt stop me generalising. If you want to get into an argument about generalisations being wrong, you will loose
Premise 1 is flawed logic, becuase -you- have started this thread, not the meme, your using circular logic, you are the one de-railing the discusison, no one else, not the meme, -you- now, if i were to say that in itself means that your not allowed to argue against it, that would be a fallacy in my own argument, but im not saying that, im just saying, this point isnt vailid.
I have just attacked a sufficient number of premises to derail everyone of your sub conclusions, and as im sure you know, to attack a valid argument, i only even needed to show that one of your premisis were false.
EDIT: btw, im not nessaciraly saying i do or dont support your conclusion, your argument is just invalid and it anoyed me.

I think that memes require wit to be funny. That people don't think "yo dawg" is funny only supports the argument that the Romanian meme may be boring as well.
That people don't like to be teased is reason enough to stop imo. There are different degrees of annoyance/fun inflicted when teasing someone. The Romanian meme is a lot of annoyance compared to how much fun it is. It is racist and boring.
You're missing the point that Romanians don't understand the sarcasm because English isn't their native language. That is different from claiming that Koreans are better than foreigners at starcraft.
The first one to reply to the un-witty joke about Romanians was a Romanian. Durak was NOT the one who started derailing the thread lol.

Edit2: Mislabled my argument diagram. Let me fix this. Edit3: Should be good now. Durak was NOT the one who started derailing the thread lol.
well seeing as we're now saying that comedic value is relative to individual taste the debate about it being funny or not is irrelavent, although i completely dissagree that memes need any sort of wit to be funny.
your second statement is three arguments, each of which are flawed, you have one argument (That people don't like to be teased is reason enough to stop imo) another (The Romanian meme is a lot of annoyance compared to how much fun it is.) and finally (it is racist (and boring))
the first one is insufficient on its own, "people dont like to be teased so we shouldnt tease them" this argument contains a second, hidden premise which is that people like what is best for them. that in itself is problematic though as people also dont like to be punished for crimes. But we think we should anyway.
the second argument is using a utilitarian calculation, weighing up total happiness against total suffering, and i couldnt even begin to explain how many reasons utilitarianism is wrong as a theory, if you wikki search it im sure you will quickly see why. If your still unsatisfied with why its wrong i will explain.
the final argument (i say argument becuase im not counting "its boring" because that is completely relative, and clearly some people disagree with you) is that it is racist, and with this i disagree for my earlier points made about discrimination. Racism is when unfounded prejudices are made, this is not unfounded. Is it racist for me to generalise that on average americans are better at basketball than non-americans? Is it sexist for me to generalise that men are on average stronger than women physicaly? Chill claimed that on average romainian posters fail to pick up on sarcasm, this is something i have actually seen a few times, not that im a massive forum user if im honest, however if chill's claim is justified, which it seems to be, it is not racist, its just true.
Next paragraph, you argue that romanians dont understand sarcasm becuase english is not their first language, sarcasm is not a language concept, its a social concept, cultures where sarcasm is more prominent are more receptive to it despite language barriers. The concept of sarcasm relies on your understanding that an idea being suggested is so obviously wrong, that the person saying it is not being serious, this is not effected by the language the idea is said in. Now this being taken into account, Koreans live in a culture where pro gaming is more prominent, and they are better at it than people from non-pro gaming cultures, not becuase there is something inherently in their DNA or something that makes them superior, it is all culture based, my analogy holds perfectly.
And finally, it doesnt matter who started the debate, debating a topic, and then saying, "this topic causes debate" is a logical fallacy regardless, it is not a valid point. The sheer fact that we are debating a point, does not argue against it, it is merely observing the fact that we're in dissagreement about something. The real fault of this "de-railing threads" is not the meme, it is people posting responses to it in threads rather than in a seperate thread where this debate -should be taking place- it is not of itself causing the problem.
i dont actually find the meme funny myself, i am just saying, the arguements being used against it, are not valid, let alone sound. and as i stated above, there should probably be a discussion thread on this if people really want to debate this properly.
