Sigh, just a minor rant. For the most part I try to ignore sexism on the internet. Anonymity is a wonderful thing, and lets me game just fine for the most part. But every once in a while something happens that just irks me...
So I hop on TL and check the streams. Orb, a friend of mine from highschool is streaming some 1v1 action in SC2. I hop on vent, join his channel, and ask if he wants to do some 2v2's. I can apparently be heard on the stream. The reaction to my sudden appearance is frustrating. I should really remember to turn off the damned chat window on those streams...
"Woah who's the female?" "She sounds fat." "Wait who's the girl?" "Girls don't play starcraft." "That girl shows up on several TL streams" "What's she look like?" "Pictures?" "She's probably just an attention whore" "LOL girl playing SC must be ugly" "Girls only play games to get male attention." "Is she any good?" "Wait who's the chick?" "cam whore prolly"
etc etc etc...
Ugh. I play lots of different video games because I ENJOY them. And I could probably kick your ass in quite a few of them as well. Not as some gimmick to get attention, but because they're fun. I like the challenge, the speed, the strategy, etc. I play these games for the same reasons you do!
And why bring up my appearance? What the shit does that have to do with anything? I'm no supermodel, but I'm far from some cloistered fatty, ugh. There is so much importance placed on female looks in the real world, and now I have to deal with it on the internet? While trying to play SC2? As resilient as I am to that sort of thing, YES I get self conscious.
Sometimes it really sucks being one of the only girls in a group. This collective attitude is one of the reasons there are so few girls in gaming in the first place. It just feels like there's too much expected of us. I go to local events worrying about my appearance, as retarded as that is. I even *know* it's stupid, but I still can't help but worry a bit. No, I'm not gorgeous, but I'll kick your ass in SC2. Why can't that be good enough?
Ugh, it's just frustrating that it all affects me like it does, even when I'm conscious of it. I watch these other streams and people are all commenting on the player's ability and skill at the game, not their presumed appearance. Just.... grrr
I think people are put off by female gamers because a lot of them frankly are attention whores. Nothing annoys me more than some girl yapping off about how "she can play wit da boizzz" and she's a "gurrrrlll gamer" and "i can beat my bf at halo lol omg <3"
At the same time. I feel sorry for girls who aren't taken seriously because of those annoying bitches. I don't give a fuck who you are, where you're from, what gender/sexuality/whatever you may be, shut up and play the game.
I know quite a few legit female gamers and they hate the GURRRL GAMERZ just as much as anyone else.
However, don't expect internet gaming pubs to be full of anything but retards, hyper-sexual 14 year olds, and sexists. Here is a good example of how shitty gaming pubs can be:
You should start playing MMO's. You will get a ton of free shit.
But really, don't worry about what dumb kids say. Girls who play video games are cool, much better than playing dolls and having tea parties or whatever it is the rest of you do.
lol don't worry, all the DC/VA/MD guys don't think you're an attention whore. We know you're not fat, we know you're far from ugly, and we love you! Don't ever worry about your appearance, especially when you come to a LAN. We do not judge!
edit: Well I might judge because of this you said:

Pretty much this. Keep in mind who your audience is as well : sexually-frustrated men who look to "hang out with the guys" and what not. Its pretty much just easy for men to bandwagon onto either hating a girl, or ogling her online. Sucks -_-.
Hmmm I dunno, but back when I played various MMO's (serious enough to be guild officer and on vent 24/7 and etc.) all girls in guild were appreciated and well treated, not overly-well treated but like you know, with as much as respect for "another gamer". Of course sometimes guys on vent would be flirty but that's probably natural anywhere, not just in gaming space?

Don't let it get to you. A large percentage of any newer game's online population are going to be socially inept adolescents. If you were a guy who wasn't already in their "circle" they would probably just call you a fag instead. I like to believe reputable members of any gaming or esports community are going to be the ones that take their relationships with the people they play with seriously.

it's not an opinion.
Good save.
On topic, I think DH covered the issue pretty well. Gaming communities see enough drama queens (or "GURRRL GAMERZ" as DH so eloquently put) that a stigma against female gamers builds up. In some sense, the stigma builds on itself: the stereotyping drives away non-attention-whoring female gamers, meaning that the only exposure those communities gets to female gamers is with the drama queens, further entrenching their ideas.
This even has made itself evident on TL several times: when a self-professed girl gamer shows up with a blog announcing such @ less than 20 posts, people get skeptical. They think "Zia". They think they're being trolled. And so, they mount the typical response of playing with the troll with such responses.
For the most part, I think you've avoided this stigmatism on TL, largely because I can't remember a discussion where your gender has actually come up. It's unfortunate that anonymity has to act as the armor for your dignity, but given how that works for lots of things on the internet (not just gender, but in certain cases race, sexual orientation, political leanings, etc.), it's kind of par for the course.
nobody with half a brain cares what organ is dangling (or not dangling) from your crotch when we're playing video games over the internet
i realize it is difficult to have a decidedly apathetic opinion on the matter when you are the subject, but you still gotta realize that nobody with half a brain cares and neither should you

In general, nerds on the internet are a pretty sexist group of people even though most won't say anything to you in real life. The fun thing is that a good amount of them are probably cloistered and/or fatties and would be mortified if any of us saw their picture, even being the majority group. Also, cloistered fatty is my new favorite term.
Sometimes it really sucks being one of the only girls in a group. This collective attitude is one of the reasons there are so few girls in gaming in the first place.
A lot of girls actually flock to it, which probably makes the problem even worse. I get the feeling that Frag Dolls probably make things worse for female gamers.

My suggestion, on the internets, is to be vulgar and sexist right back. That's probably a horrible suggestion, but if it were me at the center of attention, it'd be entertaining.

False. FakeSteve, I want to play SC2 sitting on your lap.
I was on that stream and kinda shocked at the peoples responses to hearing a female voice..I guess I'm used to the relative manner that I expect from TL.
Btw I didn't know your a girl.. I was wondering who that female voice was that was going on several of the streams I've watched... reminds of this one time a saw a chick kicking ass in counterstrike in the local internet cafe...

I'm still surprised at how scared/defensive guys get about "losing to a girl" in sc/gaming in general
Remember a quote from Alan Shore that women will be offended if they are objectified, but women will be more offended if they are not objectified, which means they are not sexually attractive to men.
Yes there are lots of morons out there, especially on the internet, but really all places. The important thing is to get past it and not to get sucked in to their level. The saddest thing to see is someone reacting so strongly they start to do stupid things themselves. (although, sometimes the ones that react stupidly are actually annoying/stupid already :o)
Kids with nothing better to do than pester people and make random stupid jokes that everyone will understand. It's always easier to pick on the minority. From my experience (my own gf plays games as much as me) that particular breed of female is quite a lot more fun and down to earth than the rest of the bunch so thumbs up from me.
It's pretty fair to say that you'll be constantly harassed on the internet if you are a woman who plays games AND you try to use your femininity to gain any advantage.
If you just kick people's asses all day long, you'll eventually get respect.
Look at IdrA - probably one of the most rude, obnoxious human beings I've ever been around but he's got my respect because he's fucking awesome.
And I'm sorry I can't say I buy the story about not wanting attention when you join a game you KNOW is being streamed and you 'hop on vent'. I could easily be wrong, but it seems you like attention on some level, but were just disappointed when the attention you did get weren't the type you were hoping for.
You act like you want the guys to treat you like one of them.. Well, newsflash, to treat you like a guy, you need to be a guy... or a good old friend who's been around forever. Unknown females are automatically treated as potential mates by the subconscious, so your best option is to pretend to be a man until you feel the people are normal and won't act like idiots or something. I dunno.

Ouch.
You ever stream games by any chance? Do you bother making a conscious decision about how people are going to react to you? Here I thought I was going to ask a friend if he wanted to 2's without loading up SC2 which consumes 95% of my poor laptop's resources.

Flip it around a bit. Think of something you do that is almost exclusively participated in by girls. How do you react to one of the rare guys who participate? Do you act different?
In the case of how guys react, we act like idiots, regardless of the activity.....
In a lot of ways, niteReloaded is right. Without being a guy, or a good friend, you will not get treated the same. It sucks, but it is caused by the immaturity of many of the people who participate in the gaming culture, as well as the subconscious factor mentioned.....
I have no doubt that it is frustrating. And stupid. And you should not have to worry about it. So dont worry about it. You will probably never meet them face to face, and what they say will not come back to haunt you, so what does their opinion mean to you? The people who actually know you are the ones that matter.
there is no way in HELL you can kick my ass in sc2 honestly though, people care whether you're a girl or not because, obviously, guys are attracted to a girl who shares common interests with them. For a hardcore gamer, thats not easy, because a large part of their interests lie in games, and other internet stuff, which normally girls dont go for, because its stigmatized by the rest of their gender, and thus they grow up thinking its 'stupid'. I've actually looked into this a lot and they dont PRETEND not to like games even if they do, they dont like them even if they give it a shot at playing them, because they've been conditioned so long to think that games are in fact, silly and childish. thus, its as rare to find a girl who likes vidya as it is to find a guy whos into generic girl stuff (whos straight) Also, to find a hardcore RTS gamer girl is surprising because in general, it seems girls arent really that great at rts. I have a girlfriend who has been playing all sorts of games since a young age, and even a lot of rts, starting from C&C (all of em) up to red alert 3 and the like, and she plays wow, guild wars, lineage 2, and all sorts of console shooters, and gh you cant really say shes an attention whore, in all mmo's she makes male chars, and she doesnt speak on xbox live, noone really knows shes a chick on the internet, and shes REALLY good at all the games she plays, EXCEPT the rts's. she can play any song 90+ % expert on gh, so she has relatively fast fingers she can pvp like a beast in all mmo's and is pretty damn good at shooters, she has a pretty good mind but she just cant handle rts at a competetive level at all. I've been trying to teach her SC for a year now, and she is enthusiastic about learning, practices, and listens to what i say, we watch VODs together, i even made an FPVOD site to help her out (which i later posted on teamliquid too) but she cant get above CPU level. I've seen this in other girls too (two others to be precise, i dont know many gamer chicks) they are interested in rts they like how it looks but they simply cant play it competetively, even though they want to, whereas they can play REALLY well at fighters/shooters i honestly have no idea why.
There are retards on the internet who will attack your character for just about any reason. Being a girl is a pretty easy thing for them to latch onto, but really everyone gets bullshit and you just have to realise that these people are 13 year old douchecanoes that will probably never disappear. Anonymity + no repercussions = playground for jerkoffs.
Go back to your strategy of ignoring these people. When you stop giving them the time of day they suddenly become a lot easier to deal with. Lots of them (tho maybe not all) will get bored if you don't pay any attention to them. I know that sounds like cliche advice, but it's true.
That said, all stereotypes about female gamers are pretty much bullshit. You will notice what you look for, but if you're a normal person who isn't some vore comic reading objectifying jackoff, you'll notice most girls you meet that play games are basically normal. If you only looked for male gamers who are needy antisocial retards that watch so much porn they get off on traps, then you'd probably think gaming in general was a hobby only freak's enjoy.

Hmmm.. if I were the type of person who writes a thread like this, which clearly shows that you care A LOT what other people think of you, then I would probably have a thought that says "whoa I'm about to enter a stream watched by hundreds of people" before I actually join, which effectively makes you guilty of attention whoring =) Also, the fact that these comments about appearance hit the nerve is a clear indicator that you have some insecurities about it, which you should just shake off, you don't look that bad judging by the profile pic.
Don't take me too seriously, I just like playing the mentalist role.
a lot of nerds avoid girls or social situations entirely in their real life so when a girl is playing video games (OMG!) they feel someone or something unfamiliar is invading their sanctuary and they are threatened by it and naturally they get defensive and usually act like dicks....
that or they will be super nice because its the only interaction they have with the opposite sex besides talking to their moms.

So you want to be treated like 'one of the guys' on the internet and you try accomplish that by a. posting your picture in ur tl.net profile b. going on stream showing ur female voice and c. making a blog just to make sure everyone who didn't listen to the stream (so like 1000x more people) finds out you're female. Pretty intelligent.
You're just mad that in IRL being a game loving girl gets you all sorts of positive attention from male nerds, whereas online it often gets you negative attention (which is what you're trying to turn around by making this blog.)
And: all girls almost always worry about their appearances whenever they go places so uhh..welcome to being a girl? (and the ones who act like they dont care what they look like are the most insecure of females)

The entire point of the op is that she shouldn't have to hide or promote the fact that she's a girl, and get treated much differently for either. Your response is obviously going to be "that's the way it is" which is what the problem is.

how would you know that though?
lol.
Not really sure what you're saying. If you mean how i would know shes the only girl on tl that kept it quiet. Thats why i wrote i think. There might be a girl on tl who people recognize who's a girl that no one knows its just i havent seen any yet. Its just i always noticed her name from way back and i remember like a year ago it was pretty big when people found she was a girl because of how long she kept it. Like most girls make a blog on their first post saying how they're a girl.
you don't get it so i'll explain it to you. for all you know there could be 100 girls on the site who haven't revealed their identity as you only know they are girls once they reveal it, thus saying "actually i think shes actually the only girl on tl i think that kept the fact that shes a girl for so long" is a retarded statement even if you preface it with 'i think'
The entire point of the op is that she shouldn't have to hide or promote the fact that she's a girl, and get treated much differently for either. Your response is obviously going to be "that's the way it is" which is what the problem is.
well i mean guys trash talk eachother online just as much too so maybe by mocking her they are treating her like one of the guys
it's not like she doesn't have her fair share or 'normal' online friends and her fair share of lil nerds sucking up to her too (seems so from the looks of this thread too)
seems pretty normal to me, i got those 3 categories too lol
If you're a female gamer, you pretty much have to be playing with friends to be treated "normally". Otherwise if you're playing online with random nobodies you'll just be hit on / harassed / insulted.
Its not really surprising at all though. Don't feel special, that's how random nobodies act online in general, not just towards girls.
So, find/make a group of friends you can play with and feel comfortable with. That's what makes games worth playing anyway.

We're not talking about talking shit between friends. If anonymous guys start bashing you, then they're called assholes. Everyone with a brain knows there wouldn't have been that reaction if a male friend had gotten on vent.

the internet is full of assholes duh. i scold people's mom as trash talk =/
Well, thanks for the random replies guys. Actually some pretty thought provoking comments from a few of you.
I guess I don't want to have to hide my gender on the internet, and yes I suppose I'm a little too sensitive to other's words. So my new solution is to just stop watching the comments in the stream lol.

There's no worries. You can tell most of the people that type that kind of shit probably never even had a date.
i find the idea of girls playing starcraft arousing.
Anyway, i don't know why people are sexist on the internet, i think for some it might just be an adopted culture and others embrace the power of anonymity to outlet their anger they've had with women and stuff. I'm sure a lot do it for a laugh as well, humor on the internet is at a pretty low point.
