So I had the opportunity to play 4 games of beta today on my friends account/computer and overall I found myself pretty unimpressed.

Obviously, I'm not going to give up hope on the game based off 4 beta plays where for the most part I was confused (went 3-1 the one loss with terran) but off the bat I found it to have higher latency (even with mouse movement), harder to keep track of your units, and less fun. When I first played SC1 back in the day I remember really enjoying the units and feel of the game right away. Maybe I just need more time to play SC2 O_O. I was probably expecting SC1 too much.

One big big big complaint I have about the game is the unit sounds. They all sound super weak and wimpy. The hydralisk attack sound? Lame. The hydralisk death sound? Lame! Tank going into siege mode? You can barely hear it. What's up with that? All the units have less feel and the lack of defining sounds actually kind of throws me off O_O.

Clarity in the game felt really hard also.

Anyways, sorry to be negative, hopefully I get to play more and I end up liking it.

Arrrg. And to continue, it goes into the attack animations... I hate seeing the tank actually shoot something out.. I hate the little lines the hydras shoot... I hate watching zerglings autosurround .

It sucks because part of me is telling myself "it's ok you only played like 4 games and it's beta so relax" but the other part of me is like "Man I'm gonna be so sad when SCBW dies... for this..."

I think you're mainly overreacting and whining, but the one thing that does seem legitimately poor is the unit reaction and micro capabilities in this game.

Though that is also very likely to evolve when the game develops further.

Those who fear that SCBW will die due to an inferior game coming out are severely paranoid for no reason. The simple fact that there is a large population of people that are scared that SCBW will die due to an inferior game coming out means that the SCBW community will always be large enough to be meaningful and therefore wont ever die.

in 2000, 2 years after SC's release, i was scared like hell because all my good in-real-life-newbie-starcrafting-friends were leaving for D2. Then when War3 came out, i had that same fear. I played around 200 games of War3 and in about 196 of them, i was daydreaming about BroodWar. I just couldnt enjoy War3. i dont think SC2 will kill SC1, even if SC2 become a massive international super megahit (which it should since it's prestigiously called StarCraft 2, but which i doubt for a variety of reason including 3D graphics and excessive automations). That being said, the only perfect video game ever made, StarCraft:Brood War, has a bright future regardless. It's still a teenager, only 12 years old. She's got all her life in front of her.

i do sincerely hope that SC2 becomes a huge hit in our eyes and according to our standards as Broodwardian elitists. I have no idea how it will turn out, but i dont think a few beta games can say too much....even if in 1998 i got ridiculously hooked on SC1 after i sent my 3rd SCV mining some minerals. i guess it'll take more time to better appreciate SC2's beauty.

From the couple games that i watched this afternoon on teamliquid's beta broadcast page, it really does seem like the units micro themselves now that i think of it. Sc1 units actually needed to be microed for positioning, not just like put them in a position and then a-move from there, or put them in a position to receive an attack, but actually moving them around mid-battle to get the right angles on the other units. Sc2 units basically do everything for you except focus-firing, and except pulling out when low on health. They don't clump at all. The same ridiculous thing you see when you don't need to split your scvs, you see when you don't need to surround with your zerglings.

It really looks like any other RTS now. Not necessarily bad though. The only thing that sucks is the music, which is godawful. I like the medivac dropship .
