*edit* I wasn't expecting so much flaming for a blog post so let me clarify: I like CSL. I don't like sitting around for 30 minutes. That is all
Ever wonder what it would be like to have your home team play against your biggest rivals -- not on the football field, but instead on the virtual landscape of StarCraft?
Answer - Like football, but without the referees. Why is CSL pissing me off?
Answer - Lack of admins. Basically I have to sit there with the other people trying to figure out who the fuck can host a game since we're all stuck behind our shitty school firewalls, dealing with bullshit like people who aren't involved in the match trolling the channel, while waiting 40 minutes to play a match because one of their team members is off taking a shit or something. After 39 minutes and 50 seconds I would just say fuck it and call the forfeit rule but THERE'S NO ADMINS IN THE GODDAMN CHANNEL.
CSL should either get more referees to make sure the rules are followed if they're going to have 40 people in the channel because EVERYONE is playing at 8 pm EST, or they should just spread out the times more so everyone isn't in there at once. Just my opinion.
Note that this is mostly referring to last season (coughMcGill). I just got my ass handed to me in the first match of this season and I don't think any amount of admins in the channel would have fixed that.

Can't you just get someone to host for you :/?

I dunno, every CSL match I've played in has been great. The other teams have been nice and accommodating, and there have been no conflicts at all. I've met a few SC playing guys and we have fun playing games to practice for upcoming CSL matches. I don't recall anything negative.

Yeah. IMO the last sentence tells you where the rest of the nerdrage is coming from.

I've been very impressed early on so far in my first CSL season. amazing website, friendly people, very prompt fast responses to emails. So far I have 0 complaints.

lol wtf? then don't play? have you volunteered to be an admin? and seriously you could have gone to channel CSL or any of the other CSL-affiliated channels (whether its a school channel or a match channel) and find someone to host. i remember i hosted and obsed an emory game once even though i'm in a totally different division. and the time thing - maybe you should go to channel CSL to talk to the admins that are usually hanging out there? use common sense more yes?
|
solutions: 1) become an admin
2) presumably each of you have many iccup friends, of which you can find one of them and ask to host for you
3) go to channel csl and ask someone to host for you. i was there the entire day today so i know that people were constantly active.
4) each team supposedly has a coordinator. this means they would be in charge of calling in forfeits and walkovers and stuff.
5) csl also has division admin, and a bunch of the admin were online today. i'm sure a quick message to any of them would help deal with your issues.
...it honestly seems like you tried your hardest to keep yourself from being helped. I think CSL has been run really quite well for a reoccuring amateur tourney. one upside to this blog is that now you know how to help yourself for next time!

While we're not in the channel at all times, DarthThienAn, dsh, Xeris, and I try to idle in channel for major complaints during peak hours. Shoot us a whisper and we'll try to deal with your problems. In fact, please email us with complaints so that we can respond to them! It's kind of hard responding to feedback that isn't directed to our email account or website

Were you one of the people who PM'd Xeris with an offer of volunteering? Great! Come help out!
Just to clarify something that you seem to have misunderstood - usually, teams only take the standardized time as a fallback time. If there are really conflicts between teams, they're usually not BM enough to refuse rescheduling. They also move to different channels (CSL1, CSL2, CSL3, maybe even CSL4!) when there are too many people in CSL. If teams are no-shows and you send us an email calling them out on it, usually the other team also isn't BM enough to make excuses about not showing up. Since we don't really have enough admin to be as official as football with referees at every game, there's a bit of mature self-regulation and common sense involved with the process of playing in the league.

Edit: Oh shit I meant CPL LOL ignore my post

Who are you? what school / division? If you let me know, perhaps I can make your next match will be smoother.
Every 8-9 schools (division) has an admin aka "referee", should be more than enough to cover you all with a little patience. I started off something like 3 games consecutive earlier today: host game, wait for players, start, leave, join another channel, host game, etc. etc.
at 8pm est today, i was pretty active online for about 1-2 hours purely admin-ing. I know for a fact that there were at least 2 other div admins online, as well as a couple of the head admins in csl.
Please also note that even the people who joined the staff are basically all still college students - busy with life and they can't make every match.
Not to mention we had 100+ csl players/people online at that time (3 out of 4 matches in my division were at that time, and they were even more that i wasnt keeping track out). Slick is right, just ask someone to host. There are plenty who would be able and willing. Sometimes, it just doesn't work, but that's rare.
Waiting 40 minutes for a match and not playing? Call the forfeit rule at 30 minutes and just email your division admin telling them what happened. You don't need an admin eyewitness, although it obviously helps. It's pretty rare for a school to deny they didn't show - at most they say there was a miscommunication.
And actually, the McGill - Hampshire game went pretty smoothly today, don't recall there being any problems at all except for waking up some McGill players from their afk states (that didn't take too long).
Let me tell you my experience today regarding CSL: woke up sometime around 130, went for a quick lunch with my laptop because there was a match at 2 (think that was McGill / Hampshire). Hampshire took something like 15-20 minutes to show up because they had to reinstall sc on the school computers they were using. McGill was pretty patient - "going afk, call/text me when my match is up." After that it was smooth sailing - I hosted a couple of the games for them and then left because I had a little lag; chilled in the channel after. The match ended around 330 or so.
Spent the next few hours working (hw) while in channel / hunting down players for the All Star match.
Had dinner around 5 or 6, then went straight back to work, hooked Nony and Frozen up with their opponents during this time.
8pm - had 3 matches to admin; there were like 50 or 60 people in the channel (75% of them active), couldn't read the chat, so I told each of the three matches to go to csl1, csl2, csl3. Spent the next 1-2 hours bouncing back between csl, csl1, csl2, and csl3, checking for updates, problems, hosting games, etc. Spent a lot of time with the harvard/carleton match since they had lag / joining game issues even when i hosted.
Had a little break before the All Star match at 10 - that last until 11 or 12? Yeahhh. ^^
So basically, I was online about 70-80% of the time from 2pm to 12am. And I was actively chatting/doing stuff for at least 50% of that time.
I remember at one point, hazelynut, xeris, yenta, dsh, and I were all online in channel csl at the same time. piko and crescentia were online during the "peak" tonight as well, admining for their divisions. Dunno about my other division admins .
So...please think about you say before you start saying we don't have admins working.

Or you could... you know, just talk to the other team.

Please don't get me wrong, I really do enjoy CSL and playing with other schools. I do, and I think the people who organize it deserve a great big hug. It's just that sometimes I get annoyed when I want to play some Starcraft, and instead I spend most of my time sitting around waiting to play. I did go into the CSL channel and ask if anyone could host and somebody offered to and then... didn't host. So I dunno what to make of that.
The match I had today was good for the most part, we had some lat issues but that was it. Last season was when we had to sit around for almost an hour while we waited for some guy who was afk in the channel, and our coordinator couldn't call a forfeit because there were no admins in the channel. After that I stopped playing for that season, and this semester people wanted to start it up again, so I'm coordinating the team now.
So, basically most of this was delayed nerd rage. Yeah I was pissed that we got 3-0'd. I'll get over it.

For future references, you can call forfeits without an admin. The only problem is if they deny it, which then goes to email records and messy stuff like that - pretty rare, like I said.
Add 'DarthThienAn' or ' [CSL]ThienAn ' to your /f l and pm me if you ever need anything for a match then.
Next time you nerd rage, don't call us admins out
Edit: What kinda of smiley is ----> ' [ <---- -_-

I love people that complain about lack of man power/people on tap to help out your every need when someone is spending a lot of their spare time to provide a free service with no benefit to themselves other than the communities entertainment... 5/5 blog!

Okay it's not like our fault you're so incompetent. We have to take care of like 8 schools. I mean, while we do our best to try and help you, we can't babysit you, you know? And CSL is supposed to be fun. You're like taking this too seriously okay.

I think CSL management is good
|
FishNChips...you're British. Shut the fuck up.
CSL pisses me off too for the same reasons it pisses off the OP.
Even though it all works out in the end, it's just a pain in the ass managing players on my own team who are more or less motivated. I have some that are very motivated, then I have players like fucking Dino (whom I would bet my life on beating all but only a few players in the CSL) where I literally have to go to his place, knock on his door, and kick him awake to make to matches. Then I have disgruntled newer players who get mad about not being put into lineups when they're below D- and just quit keeping contact altogether because of that. Then I have middle of the road people who want games...then I have to weigh whether really trying to go for winning the division and making it to playoffs, or trying to spread playtime to as may different players as possible. But then I get people who REALLY want to win on my ass, and people who don't really give a shit just...not giving a shit.
THEN there are the actual matches. Most go well. The other teams are chill, the other players are chill and fun to talk to, the other coordinators are chill and easy to work with. But then there are teams who have absolute dick motherfucking douche bags for coordinators. I seriously wanted to go visit that jackass with duct tape and a baseball bat (I'm not gonna name names). Then there's players not showing up...too many players showing up and lagging games as obs and refusing to leave...blah blah blah fucking blah.
Then we have the fucking reporting system...this season apparently they're going to hand out set forfeits to teams who don't hand in replays. I honestly tried to get replays last season and it just does not fucking work. That fucking kills me. UCR isn't going to be a contender for the playoffs this season, and it won't be because of our players.
I'm drunk.

CSL is awesome. The whole point is to get together and play with other schools and it does its job well =)
