hello~~ppl...I'm sitting here at work and have a lot of free time. I've never been good at shopping. I usually go to the biggest store/mall in town and get w/e I need - never pay much attention to prices nor compare any products...I would just walk in and grab what i came for and walk out (after pay) lately I've been wanting to dress a bit more decent and professional (at work/ out party). All i wear when i work is khakis/dress pants and buttom up shirts of some sort. And when I go out I wear jeans from maybe old navy and button up shirts... any ideas to improve dress code? lol :p
im korean about 6' and skinny if that matters...
edit: pictures of good dresscode would be appreciated :D

If the price really doesn't matter to you, then maybe check out some places in the mall like:
Nordstrom Loehmann's
Or if you're looking to 'dress up'
Then check out places like: Rock & Republic Lacoste Express Buckler Scotch & Soda

|
I checked out Nordstrom website got good collection of clothes lol but I never said price does not matter to me :D I can pay around $100 a jean but dang some of the jeans are really expensive >_<

invest in at least one pair of nice jeans, especially if you are skinny. Look online for APC, nudies, etc. and read up on raw denim, or get some dark pairs of plain color (no fake-fading) levi's if you're cheap (501,514, or 511, probably 511 if you're tall/skinny).
find some cheap ass dress shirts for clubbing/parties/etc if you don't already have them. brand doesn't really matter. Just make sure it fits well and is a solid, dark color that is relatively neutral and has no designs on it. If it fits you properly, it will look good (make sure shoulder seams fall square over your shoulders, and make sure fabric under your armpits are not too loose).
get a watch if you don't have one already. make it neutral and understated, unless you can afford an expensive brand. all silver, or black band with plain face only. timex is a good brand for cheap watches
for shoes, it really depends on your lifestyle and personal preference, but if you are tall and skinny I would recommend slimmer shoes like oxfords, canvas shoes, etc.
for everything else, basically just make sure things fit well. For suits, buy CHEAP ASS suits in standard colors (i'm talking like walmart/etc.) and get them tailored to fit by a professional tailor, this will save you a ton of money and you'll look really good.
The only things that really matter with fashion right now are fit and colors. You probably don't want to fuck around with colors, so just worry about fit.

Express is the way to go, over half my wardrobe is from Express, They have a nice mix of dress clothes and casual wear and they aren't* super expensive

Express and Gap are probably the two main places I get clothes nowadays.

http://teextile.com/
where I buy all my shirts. they're trendy, unique, and cheap. haven't bought a shirt at a store since I found that site.

H&M for general clothing, band shops or geek shops for tshirts= profit.

For dress shirts you can try: http://www.paulfredrick.com/. What I love is their "non iron" line - it is simply the best if you're like me and hate ironing anything. Also, they have a "trim-fit" cut, which helps if you are thinner than average. If you catch some sales the prices are good too.
|
I don't really shop online for clothes but afaik for men's clothing bananarepublic isn't too bad. I can't say from experience though as I've never really used it; just heard multiple people recommend it to others.

Wangsta has got it right (although I'm not sure about Walmart suits ). A lot of people underestimate the difference a tailor can make. A blazer from a cheap store that's been tailored will most likely look better than a mid-range expensive one out of the shelf.
You can get some decent raw denim from Marc by Marc Jacobs for around $100
|
I won't give you advice on where, since I'm short and thus buy clothes for short people. I'll just say that right now is a great time to go out and buy clothes because it is the end of the season.
A lot of 50%~ off sales and stuff, so you should go before everything good sells.
Edit:Actually...
yesstyle.com
Ships from HK/China/Japan/KOREA(!), I got a lot of 20$ dress shirts and pants from there and got them tailored. They come in tall sizes because the lines are designed for models for the most part. I wear them when I perform(I'm music performance major so this is often) and they look great. I got a great knee length coat for 60$ which would have been in the hundreds here.

Macy's / Bloomingdale's
Most shit you need can be found at Gap, H&M.

Banana Republic!
My new favorite store
Really nice place to get some good looking clothes for 20 somethings.

Disclaimer: This is going to be somewhat UK based but I'm sure you can get the stuff in America.
Like some poster said above: Raw denim. Always try them out and check the fit before purchasing ... take them off and then try again.
You can normally get the "asian" stuff from yesstyle and the fit should be right if you check your sizings properly. For city, I'd recommend going with some dark raw denim skinnies/slims (though there's a large overlap within most asian brands anyways) and a decent peacoat for the cold (the ones with epaulettes are pretty dank). Disclaimer: Yesstyle can sometimes have Hong Kong syndrome.
Dress shirts you can buy pretty much anywhere and you can buy any cheap ones since if you can't tell the difference, most people won't either.
Shoes, you can go casual street trainers (probably some pure white Nike AF1s) or smart oxford/brogues. There are some places online which do nice italian handmade shoes. Feels good man.
Keeping a stash of stock clothing is pretty useful. For smarter, I'd recommend plain polos (American Apparell, Topman, Uniqlo).
Knits: Burton,Zara,H&M,Uniqlo
Links: (Most of these should work in almost any country; and if not, source what you want and it'll probably be stocked somewhere near you in another store).

Going out clothing from tonight. Deemed smart enough to get into most places. Should replace shoes with something formal but I love AF1s too much.

Hope that helped.

1 Black Suit (mysuitshop.com $300)
1 Pair of Jeans (APC New Standard, APC.fr $150)
3 Washed relaxed shirts (J Crew, $45-$60)
1 Clarks Desert Boot (Zappos $95)
3 Dress shirts (white, baby blue, gray Jantzentailor.com $50)
1 V-neck white (American Apparel $8)
1 Leather jacket (Black Scissors, $200)
This is the standard list of my wardrobe and i feel that it matches my age and income level... except that I have like 6 suits now.. i cant control myself..
This is what some refer to as "StyleForum" steez. The forum is where people gather to show off what they wear and hop onto hype brands and clothing.
Getting a subscription to GQ would definitely help steer you in the right direction. Beware to not take all their advice, just choose what you like. Good luck!

Anyways, I'm kinda in a similar position. I have very little clothes to look "nice." Recently, I went out and bought two nice sweaters, one cotton, other cashmere. I honestly have to say they were definitely worth it. However, as for pant-wear, I still only have jeans... Literally. Four pairs of jeans, one pair of slacks (for a suit)... Nothing else, haha.

I don't get why guys like tight pants ... don't your gonads get mashed up every time you move?
Nice find in teextile ... interesting alternative to threadless.com

dude, you wanna look like a tranny with that tight leather jacket?
Buy a long black coat or if leather below the waist.

negative. leather jackets come in alot of styles. stick to tight/slim fitting ones that arent too cropped. However, leather jackets are not supposed to go below your waist. buying a leather jacket that is too large or long makes you look tacky.

Don't get cheap walmart suits. The danger of cheap suits is that they can be really low quality, have bad quality, wear out easily. Second, you want someone who knows what they're doing to measure you and such. I like men's wearhouse for affordable suits/accessories.
About the pictures above, the problem with buying something that looks good on an actor/model is that often it looks good because they look good. It doesn't always translate well, especially if your build is different.
The problem with shopping is either you/a friend has to know about clothes or the retailer has to know. So if you go to a department store and don't know exactly what you're looking for, you might buy something crappy. Middle to higher end stores with good representatives don't have this problem, but you don't get bargains either, unless you go at the end of season when they're selling off their stock.
And where not to shop: old navy. I bought some shirts from there, and the color faded so fast, and the fabric looked blotchy.

my favorite jeans are UJ from uniqlo. they are soooo super comfy and they look really good too.

I wish I had taste for fashion, but I don't so I'm in same position as OP. It seems to mainly comes down to developing an eye for what is good on you personally, with hair, eyes, physique, and also coming to understand what kind of lady's fashion you like, and then suit yourself in the men's version of that. Sounds a bit shallow but there are totally diff looks that are going about.

Sapraedon, do they charge customs on clothes from yesstyle? Also I'll probably be asking you for future fashion tips, I like your dress sense and you seem to be a similar build to me.

I'll post my question here as well. Where is a good place to find pea coats like the one in Sapraedon's post (something not too formal that someone in their 20's would wear).
here is the pic i'm talking about from his post + Show Spoiler +

oh man...I don't think i'll do well with tights...it seems so painfull  however, i saw a lot of korean guys wear tight jeans when i went to korea last year for vacation...I was the only one wearing regular straight jeans -_-;

That one was from H&M. Roughly £50. Nicely priced. Good quality. I didn't really want one with a large collar.
Edit: Also, I don't believe they charge customs on yesstyle since I've never had to pay anything extra on top of the p&p and listed price.
