Ok for a long time now my computer will just randomly shut off- Well it actually goes into standby mode because I can still hear sounds and the comp is on, but the monitor just shuts off and says no signal while the fans speed up.

This only happens when I am playing 3d games like HoN, Street Fighter 4, etc. And it doesn't really seem to happen in the middle of a game (when most action is going on), it seems to happen when the screen is stationary or nothing is really going on (like within the first 1-10 minutes after loading a game)
(I also get this little issue where objects on the screen will get these tracers on random screen objects. This is minor, sometimes it will cover the screen in webs of this shit.)+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

sometimes alt tabbing corrects it temporarily. And I think it is intensified when background windows are opened.

I have an Sapphire Ati Radeon x1950 series card and apparently this has been a problem for many, I couldn't seem to google a solution (all the threads were years old as well). One thing I did try from google was to update the ATi CCC.exe/driver and once I did that - now the sound doesn't work. I don't know if it fixed the video issues yet as I can't /don't wanna play without sound.

here is a similar thread I made for hon forums

10 minutes of loading a game

Buy a new computer...

On a more serious note, artifacts like that are usually caused by heat I think, flip it open, clean dust, be careful/read a guide on how to not mess up your computer if you're not comfortable opening it. Download a hardware monitoring program to check the temperatures (with & without applications running).

Artifacts is usually related to unstable card down-clock by a bit and try again but usually there is heat that goes along with that problem eh it's an old card if it was pre oc then return it down to stock.

randomly shutting off sounds like a psu problem or os instability problem either way you should update you xp to sp3 :D updates block viruses and old exploits to getting into your computer.

how do i tell if it is OC? I mean I didn't do anything to it.

it's not randomly shutting off, it's going into standby mode..

can't run windows update because
The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running:

- Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer)
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
- Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed)

Pretty sure I disabled all this shit. actually event log still enabled

wait , im on the windows install page and all it wants me to do is install the windows genuine validation thing, I think maybe that's why I didn't update. Is there a way to avoid this annoying thing>

I was going to suggest overheating as the cause, but it seems that the temperatures are actually fairly low. When did you take the screenshot? When you run games, the CPU/GPU work much harder, which result in a significantly higher temperature, try taking a look immediately after your gaming sessions.

I think this is a hardware problem. Not sure if upgrading to SP3 would help.

Really don't know =\

GPU can tolerate a much higher temperature than CPU, I think anything below 75 should definitely be fine. Doesn't seem like it's an overheating issue.

When you updated CCC it may have also installed the ATI HD Audio drivers. I had this happen while building my new machine. I somehow installed ATI's audio drivers along side the updated 5870 driver and the sound stopped working. I couldn't figure it out at first by just looking at the sound/volume controls. Once I went into the actual configuration in the control panel I was able to see that it had been switched. If yours got switched too you just need to set it back to the on-board audio or aftermarket audio if you installed a PCI Audio Card. As for the lines you can go into the 3D settings in the CCC and disable the Catalyst AI and see if that makes a difference. Leaving it on made games impossible to run for my friend's 4870x2 setup and also caused some slowdown on my build. After disabling it everything ran smooth as a whistle. I think the AI may be overzealous and ends up throttling overall performance.

The temps don't seem high to me either. As stated above, under 75 isn't horrible under load. Above that and you may wish to verify that air is circulating well throughout your machine to improve cooling. Since you're comfortable taking the card apart to clean it you might also consider removing the current thermal paste that is on the card and replacing it with an aftermarket thermal compound as that can sometimes shave off a few degrees. If you go with something like Arctic Silver-5 there is a break-in period and I'd recommend not letting the system run 24/7 until you see the average running temperature stabilize.

Edit: I forgot to mention to open your Display settings and check your power saving settings in the screen saver tab. You might want to disable any auto-standby settings. It could be that for whatever reason your computer isn't recognize mouse movements or keystrokes while in game and the power saver settings are activating a standby because it thinks the machine isn't in use. While rare I have had a couple apps do this under Windows XP. I disabled all power saving features and just make sure that if I think I'm gonna be AFK for a while to activate a standby manually.

yea, I noticed the paste seems a bit dry and low, I have been meaning to get some.

I checked the control panel> sounds thing (as instructed from some old thread before, and it was all fine).

I'll look into the CCC thing for lines

also, yea I think I do have the power saver on. The funny thing though is that the shit doesn't even work.. (lol maybe it only works when games are running?) Maybe this is the problem.

yae i've been using this since it never works http://samanathon.com/windows-tip-shutdown-your-computer-with-the-command-prompt/

No problem at all. I'd like to help you get the sound issue resolved though.

What options are listed in the Sound Playback dropdown box in the Audio tab of the Sound & Audio Devices menu? From your description above it sounds like the sound drivers have become uninstalled.

You've probably tried this already but in case you haven't: right-click My Computer, open up the Properties and pull up the Device Manager under the Hardware tab. From there look for any Yellow exclamation points indicating broken or missing drivers (specifically under the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" sub-menu). If there is one (or more) right click and pull up their properties. Under the Driver tab try to use the Update Driver button and allow it to search online for the driver. With any luck it'll detect one to use. If it doesn't find one but the driver is missing/broken you may be able to locate them on the Drivers CD that came with your motherboard or on the motherboard manufacturer's website.

only option is realtek hd audio output

no exclaimations, I just uninstalled the one that said ATi but it didn't do anything.

I did however find a question mark on 'unknown devices' which is actually my video card. can't update that. kinda weird actually because the display adapter is working fine.

what is the secondary thing too? is that normal?

found the sapphire website which is a bit mroe specific for the CCC/driver DLs , it seems I got 9.11 when I think I need 9.8 and dling/installing now.

ps- earlier i fiddled around in bios and found nothing to change audio

I wouldn't downgrade. I'm pretty sure the 9.11 drivers are the proper ones for that card but to make sure you can plug in your details here and get the full suite:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

I'm almost positive the Secondary refers to the second HDMI/DVI socket on the card for use of a second monitor. I can't verify this at the moment because I'm at work and also in need of a new hard drive for my rig (current one has died but I'll be ordering another this Friday) to be able to get it back up and running. Before it died I did notice that the CCC treated the sockets as two separate entities whenever I had a second monitor connected. It would make the most sense that that would be the case.

If you're positive the Unknown Device is related to the video card and if that model card comes with a DisplayPort socket for a third monitor like the newer Radeon/Eyefinity cards then it might be that it is missing the driver(s) for that socket (although I'm unsure why they wouldn't have come packaged with the rest of the 9.11 CCC Suite). You'll be able to confirm this once you've installed the package.

In regards to the BIOS, On-Board audio will usually be listed under the Integrated Peripherals submenu but I don't think it has been disabled since it is listed there in your Device Manager. It may, however, be set to Auto and that might be allowing the ATI audio drivers to force sound through HDMI. If you can locate it in the BIOS and it does have an "Auto" option you can try switching it to "Enabled" to see if that makes a difference.

I've gotta pack up my laptop since the office will be open in about an hour but I'll check back once I get home & unpacked (2~2.5 hours).

Well i downgraded, did nothing. Reinstalled 9.11 again, did nothing.

(Btw, Am I supposed to DL both things for the card or does the CCC come with everything?)
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.13&lang=English

yea duh, the secondary is the other plug on the back of the card. It has 2, there isn't a 3rd one though.

yea the unknown device says its the x1950 card and needs a driver.

it's actually CMOS (dunno if that makes a difference) I'll check when I restart after install here.

edit- k I installed the other driver (from the link) and it fixed the unknown device issue. (disappeared from list, still have primary and secondary device in display adapters)

stupid Ati T200 unified Sound AVstream driver came back. I disabled in Device Manager.

only thing I saw under integrated periph that looked remotely close was something called 'azalia codec' or something like that. It was set to AUTO and there was no enable (just disable).
Tried to disable it just now and it's giving me errors when I try to run winamp or whatever (still no sound), turning it back on.

pretty sure my gigagbit mobo has a via chip on it.

I guess the next step would be to try and find a sound driver? How do I find out my chip/what driver I need?

I found a program called belarc advisor that tells me I have a gigabyte P35-DS3R mobo with a Realtek High Definition Audio , now im installing a new driver.

EDIT- installed driver , still no sound T_T

yea i just uninstalled all the ATI stuff and sound works, but now, obviously, my video is all gayed up.

installed something called omega drivers, which worked but is showing 2 '?'s in device manager for my SM bus controller and another unknown for my card.
yea i just opened HoN and let it sit in a chat room and after a minute I could hear the fan spinning up, i'd alt tab and see the fan stop and the temp got up to about 75°C, 82°C, 86°C and would go down after tabbing (did this about 3 times). after the 3rd time I let it sit, and it froze my whole comp, this time I heard the same sound repeating over and over like a real crash and not a standby thing.

how much do you take your video card apart? You said you take it apart to clean it, do you actually remove the heatsink then put it back on afterwards? That could cause alot of problems if you do.

Sorry it too me so long to get back. I work Mon. night through Fri. morning, 2300-0900 USEast (GMT-5) so I tend to sleep all day during the week. I'll actually be heading back in to work early in another hour or so to finish helping a coworker with her computer troubles but that should be resolved quickly and I'll have the rest of the night to hopefully get your sound sorted out.

Anyway, onward!

Keep Azalia turned to Auto/Enabled in the BIOS. That is definitely the on-board audio of your mobo which is why disabling caused errors with Winamp (Winamp could no longer find an audio device to play through after it was disabled). I hit Gigabytes site and found that model mobo. These are the audio drivers for it:
http://america.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_audio_realtek_azalia.exe

I'd also remove the Omega Drivers and reinstall ATI's CCC / 9.11 driver set. Third party drivers are usually a last resort or for special purposes such as overclocking. When you reinstall the ATI Suite it will probably kill the sound again but we'll get that resolved. We've confirmed you have the drivers for on-board audio & that it is enabled in the BIOS. Sound works when you're not using the ATI driver set so we can eliminate faulty hardware/cables. This narrows the trouble down to the audio being disabled at a system level when using ATI's drivers for your card. Only after you've reinstalled the ATI CCC / 9.11 Driver Suite & the drivers for your on-board audio you'll need to check here:

Conexant AMC Audio is my laptop's on-board audio. You should see ATI's audio listed in the dropdown box along with something like Azalia HD Audio, Realtek AC97, Realtek HD Audio.... something other than the ATI Audio. If it is set to ATI audio you need to set it back to whatever the other option is. Click apply and then click the volume button and look at the sliders & mute boxes to make sure that nothing is muted or turned way down for that audio device.

If that doesn't work let me know what is/isn't in the dropdown menu and I'll see what else I can think of once I get unpacked at work.

ive already installed the mobo drivers previously (thought I said I did on the last page), and this menu has and is always set to the correct setting regardless of what is/isn't installed. (realtek HD audio output) ati isn't even show in the drop down either.

I now can't install the ATI CCC 9.11 (but I did install just the driver wmd thing)

I've had this problem forever and It's totally not a hardware issue. obviously something software related is causing my shit to freak out.

ok finally, got the ATI CCC installed and sound works, but now It seems that it slowly creeps up to 90°C and then the screen will blank out for a few seconds, did this about 2-3 times then finally locked up.

Huzzah, CCC & working sound! What ended up being the 'cause/solution? I'd like to know in case I come across the same problems when I get my rig back up and running. I put my order in for two 1TB spindle drives for a RAID1 data storage setup and I talked myself into getting one of the new 40GB Intel/Kingston SSDs for the OS Install. I'd have gone higher but I only needed enough space for Win7 & any major applications I might use. $3.50/GB is hard to pay when you can buy a 1TB spindle drive at about $0.09/GB. Hopefully I'll be back up and running by the weekend though ^__^

Anyway, it sounds like the only remaining problem is cooling. You said the thermal paste is lacking/dried up so it is probably about time to apply a fresh coat of some quality paste. I hear that 40's to 50's is a fairly typical idle for the Sapphire x1950's with the fan running at 50%. Low to mid 60's are typical after running for a while under load. It shouldn't be hitting in the 90's though so it's definitely an overheating issue. After you've applied some fresh paste you should be good to go.

I really have no clue what was the cause/solution. I just uninstalled and reinstalled like 10 times. I still have an unknown SM bus controller issue, says it needs a driver.

Also, my overheating issue was never like this. I mean, I could game all day and not have a crash. It seemed to only do it sometimes when the games were first loaded up. now I basically can't even play a game without it crashing in 2 minutes.

it's actually kind of coincidental and suspicious, apparently this thing regulates sensors and fans, temps, etc.
