Ok that's obviously an exaggeration, and I'm sure you guys know girls with hobbies or have girlfriends who have a variety of interests, but from what I've seen and from the complaints I've heard from my friends who currently have girlfriends -- is that girls don't do anything 0_o
My experience with women has been limited but I've grown up with friends who have had many terrible girlfriends that just order them around and are always on their ass if they are out playing sports, inside playing videogames, or doing anything that they enjoy. Relationships that I've seen last have always been with women who are passionate about something in their lives besides facebook and god knows what else.
And it just seems that a lot girls like this don't know how to answer the question, "Well what do you do in your free time?"
Usually it's just a mesh of things that everyone might do when they are bored,
"umm yeah I like to listen to music...watch movies...you know, just hang out."

I don't know. Don't take what I'm saying too seriously (not trying to get flamed here). Just thought it was a funny observation, and yes I know I need to go out and meet more women.
Keep in mind this place gives us a kind of skewed perspective of guys as well... guys are generally more similar to the girls you describe than you might think.
My rational is that girls socialize differently than guys. Guys like to play sports and do stuff together. Girls just like getting together and talking + watching movies. Therefore, guys say "I played hockey last night. What did you do?" and they might respond "Hung out with Blah" or "Watched Blah with Blah." That's my hypothesis. However, a lot of girls do play sports and do other activities.
Edit: Actually, I do watch some movies with other guys, just normally not rented ones. And I do go talk with other guys at pubs. I think we're just biased.
i think our collective definition of hobby is skewing our thoughts. Oxford English Dictionary defines hobby as

Using this definition watching movies, hanging out w/ friends, and listening to music can easily be considered hobbies. But those are not the first things we think of when we think of hobby. We think of sports, games, art, etc. Perhaps it's not that generally women don't lean towards having any hobby completely, but rather don't pursue the more competitive/hard work inspired hobbies.

well like ive met very few women who do things like play sports or do anything that is skill related.
Of course some do but not many. I mean they might say they go to the gym or workout or something but thats not really a hobby tbh. Very rarely will they be like "ya i play billiards" or "Ya i play golf"
Granted I will say its much harder for a girl to just play a sport than a guy for a hobby. Its not like girls have pickup games. You could play in an intramural team but thats about it.
hahaha but i think you sort of have a point but not really, their hobbies are different from ours. a lot of girls like reading, some like playing videogames or play sports.
and i don't think many relationships involve a guy always wanting to hangout with the GF while she rather play videogames. that might contribute to this bias.

I kind of feel sorry for girls whose only 'hobbies' are shopping and making themselves look pretty (or those who only care about drinking and partying.) Each to their own though. My own hobbies are pretty obscure at times, but wide-ranging;
Photography, reading, video-gaming (survival horror and RPGs mostly.) exploring (aka. Walking with no set plans.) shopping (but not clothing only usually books or merchandise.) watching dramas (Japanese only.) and movies, going to the cinema, cookery, sewing, arts and crafts, music, going to concerts, project work like 100 messages etc, wind-surfing (honestly I loved it back in England, but we can't do it here.) collecting things (mainly books/photo books, Japanese merchandise.) ....I also hate to admit it, but I love organizing things. Wow, I have wondered this myself many times. I often think how lucky I am to be a guy because a girl's life seems so boring. You're totally right...most of them have like maybe 1 hobby. My whole frigging LIFE is hobbies...I can't imagine it being the opposite :S.
i think this would be more accurate if it was more about other people in general :p so many girls AND guys don't seem to have any specific activity that they love to do and they don't even seem to be bothered about it :p

Yes - I adored My Boss, My Hero. It was just the right mixture of comedy and thankful lack of romance. Plus I am already a big Nagase Tomoya fan. I've also seen all three seasons of Gokusen, but season one remains my favorite. I love psychological/mystery dramas like Mr.Brain, Puzzle and Liar Game.

Hmm, going through some of the girls I know, most of their hobbies tend to be musical in the sense of either listening and playing (for me, violin, viola, piano, guitar). But besides that, I can't honestly tell you. I'm not generalizing for girls as a whole, just the ones I know. They tend to... enjoy talking about movies, and the men in them (Most recently Sherlock Holmes, or Avatar). I can't honestly tell you what else goes on, though I do have a few "gamer" friends, who play Ragnarok and TF2.
I suppose I can't say I'm much better though. I play three instruments, and play games... Though I do enjoy playing around with photoshop, or programming random segments or macros to do something I might find interesting, I can hardly say it is defined as one of my hobbies. Just... occasional past times (basically, I don't do those things with any form of regularity. Usually when I feel like it).

People more concerned with emotionally connecting to those close to them may prioritize that over improving or exercising their own skills. Hence you might not find them carefully listening to dozens of obscure albums, but they'd be glad to join their friends in going to a concert. After all, what's the point of being pro at something like billiards if no one else cares? You'll be able to socialize with it whether you're great or not.

This is going to sound extremely sexist but I think the male dominance of culture made this generalization true. For years women had to do a shit load of things to keep the households running smoothly so they take pride in not having to do anything. They look at it differently I am sure.
I think most girls have hobbies but lack having a real passion for a particular hobby. Most girls I've met tend to have a number of hobbies, probably far more than myself, but only dabble in them. Being a jack of all trades if you will. Most guys I know seem to be the opposite in that they have fewer hobbies but tend to be far more passionate about those few.
If I were to contrast myself with my girlfriend for example, she is interested in a wide variety of things and does them all a little bit. She seems to get interested in new things often and that stretches the time she can commit to any singular activity. I on the other hand am very competitive (another stereotypical male trait) about the few activities I do partake in. I wouldn't doubt if I only participate in a few hobbies because I always want to be the best in whatever it is I'm doing which puts time constraints on how many I can handle at a time. If you're that competitive, you probably pick and choose your hobbies based on which ones you display an aptitude for as well which further limits the number.
In the end, I think it has much to do with competitiveness. Guys in general are more competitive in most things you and I would consider hobbies which drives them to be really passionate about a small number of hobbies, sometimes just one. Girls are generally not as competitive thus they don't feel the need to master difficult hobbies and thus have more time to dabble in many to a lesser extent. That gives the illusion they have no hobbies. They have hobbies, they just aren't as passionate about them thus you probably don't notice.
Example right here, notice NeverGG's laundry list of hobbies? I'd imagine most guys here have a fraction of that number. Although, NeverGG is probably a bit of an exception since she seems to have quite the passion for photography. In comparison, I've got video games (a small number at that) and programming.

I think its because guys tend to be more competitive and countless hobbies are based around competition. Obviously this isnt all girls. I think, from my personal experience, that it is a higher percentage of girls than guys who dont have a solid hobby.
Pretty much agree with the general consensus that girls are less competitive and therefore their hobbies do not shine. However there are plenty of girls who commit lots of time to their interests if you know where to look. Examples: High school/College girls who hold high positions in clubs and organizations and women who pursue a career in a focused and concentrated field

I used to go to sporting events a lot, take road trips by flipping a coin to see if we'll go north/south first, then flip east/west, used to play bball with the boys, bake, knit, finish puzzles, paint on canvas, etc.
A lot of that was done while being single though - when one has more time for themselves. While in relationships, I tend to try and accomodate to the guy and try to find activities we can do together...

I must admit, a lot of times I feel like "damn, no matter where I go or what I do, it's all guys here, no girls at all". But I think that's kind of my own fault for liking a lot of nerd stuff. I'm sure there's girls who feel the same way, if their hobbies are things like knitting and dancing and cooking.

I mainly use torrenting, but if you need to stream then there are a few good places out there. For torrenting D-Addicts is excellent - for Downloads using beta player Veoh.com has a lot of episodes of Toku and Sentai, but not as many dramas. Dramacrazy and My Soju are also popular alternatives.
Generally, relationships take up a portion of a person's life, and outside of that there are personal interests that may or may not be shared with a partner. I think that this works for both sexes. If you are looking at relationships from an external perspective, you are looking at that fraction of things that that person does. I'm saying that the part that you see is the part that is demanding attention of your friends, and not caring about their boyfriend's friends to be forthcoming with you.
On a less specific-to-you note, I'd say that while men and women tend towards different interests, there is an awful lot of overlap, and this thread's generalizations very from very broad to very narrow.

There's 168 hours in a week. Lets say you work 40 hours and you sleep 8*7 = 56. 168 - 40 - 56 = 72 hours. (52 hours for those who work 60 hours) Every week you get to do pretty much whatever you want for about 60 hours. Take 60 and deduct things like commuting and eating...and you still end up with a massive load of free hours that hit you in the face every week. Now, regardless of the circumstances of your life, if you do not have hobbies or if very little of your time is dedicated to hobbies or to doing the things you like the most out of life, you do not use your time efficiently. its as simple as that. Both male and female.
I think females tend to have pretty "passive" hobbies, while men are more active. Most female hobbies will pretty much be seen as kinda lame by male observers.

All girls are special. They all have the things they love to do and plenty of hobbies. Within each girl is a magical world that is up to us to explore and find out just how everything works. If you ask her on the spot what her hobbies are of course sometimes a girl won't be able to remember because she probably was too busy doing what she does 90% of the day to process the question you asked her (thinking about shoes).

Isn't it the same both ways? I'm sure plenty of girls think that guys just watch tv and drink beer all day. You have to get to know someone to learn their hobbies/interests. Simple as that. The proportion of boring girls to boring guys is probably very very close. I've never dated a girl that didn't have hobbies and none of my close friends' have had girlfriends that I got to know without some kind of interesting hobby.

I agree with this, if you're just bumming around and playing random games it's not any different from watching TV. There's nothing really wrong with not having one dedicated hobby though. It might make you sound like a boring person if someone asks you what you do in your spare time. But you can relate to everyone else who just watches TV since you probably watch the same shows.
I think our multi-tasking society has given rise to people having mini-hobbies - things they spend a bit of time on but aren't very dedicated. I know girls who will go windsurfing with me, but none of them will walk an hour to the beach at a hint of wind like the guys.
This is also a question that mostly comes up early in a friend/relationship, as if you have to ask you obviously haven't spent that much time with them (or you would know what they do). By answering "movies, music, hanging out etc." they are just being protective. It's the same reason everyone you meet listens to "pretty much everything". By letting you know something they hold dear, they are making themselves vulnerable. If you ask a guy he's gonna say "sports, hockey, football..." manly stuff that most guys like cause its not that weird and you are less likely to say something negative. Ask a girl the same thing and she's not sure what to respond because guys like different things then girls (in general), so she goes with something safe.
yeah there are probably weird little hobbies that everyone has, but girls really do spend 90% of the time "listening to music, watching tv, hanging out, shopping, cooking". It's not the only thing they do, but it's definitely what they do most. But tv music and hanging out with friends is fun, can't blame em really

I must be the weirdest girl ever. I actually find certain types of fail/incompetence kind of endearingly cute. Like when the boys try to speak English to me and end up talking nonsense. Or when someone has glasses....Dependent guys are a bit of a drag though. I often feel like a girl has to be considered 'hot' for guys to even be friends with her. That's obviously a massive generalization, but some of the men I've met won't even look twice at a less attractive girl.
from a girl's perspective, it might look like guys have no hobbies. All we do pretty much are play games (video games, starcraft, sports, poker, etc) and play competitively while it seems like girls are always looking to do random stuff

Well, I don't think it's THAT massive of a generalization. Actually, I've never seen it happen any other way now that I think about it.
Of course, this is just based on observation, I don't talk to girls, too shy.
I believe all girls have hobbies, some are just really boring, we wouldn't think of it as a hobby. I don't really associate with boring girls, or those I perceive boring by my standards, so just purely based on the process of elimination, most of my females friends are all into either, fitness, travel or outdoor actives (climbing/scuba diving/boating/camping/cycling etc) But then again, I meet most of my friends during the above actives, so they come complete with that prerequisite. I have found, in general I typically have less in common with girls I may have met in a pub or night club. Not that they don't have hobbies, but not ones I enjoy (watching twilight, doing make up, redecorating shit)
I do agree with Rekrul though, most girls aren't going to straight out tell you what their hobbies are anyway. The reason they say, 'music, shopping movies etc' is to stay generic enough as to not rock the boat until they get to know you.

Btw imho playing musical insruments is usually considered a feminine pastime (after the far more anachronistic notion that musicians should be old bad-haired men with hooked noses ala Paganini) but it isn't that big a deal which sex has such a hobby. anyways its not like theres a dearth of guys with hobbies as narrow as drinking and hanging out
With TV, internet and facebook imho theres more people stuck in these time-consuming activities that may not constitute "hobbies". Imagine hearing people introducing themselves to have hobby: sleeping -_-
