Since TL is a pretty multilingual community I thought I would post this here. I've always really enjoyed languages and have recently started researching jobs involving languages.

So I'm asking if anyone here has a job/experience in translating, interpreting or something similar, (this also includes teaching languages, but probably not linguistics) could you give a quick rundown about your job. I guess a rough outline would be: what you do, what requirements were needed, how much you enjoy your job, what languages you use/plan to use, job security (I realise that a lot of people do freelance translating, so you wouldn't always be employed) or anything else that you think could be relevant that I have left out!

I'm starting my final year of high school and have been doing french throughout, italian at home (half italian), have done some very basic (emphasis on basic) korean and japanese. I plan on continuing to study these four to a fluent level, but I don't really have much time for korean or jap this year. I will most likely try to learn more languages later on.

I would suggest posting languages that you were interested in as opportunities may vary based on the language.

My gf is studying interpretation in Paris - English, French, Spanish and Chinease. I think it seems really really tough but apparently she'll make alot of mony on it later... And also the education is quite expensive - like 400 euro/month (its a master, 2 years)

Sounds like a pyramid scheme to me!

I'm a fluent bilingual applied linguist, and while I am capable of translation, I've never done it. I have, however, looked into it as a side option.

I'll tell you right now: for a lot of interpretation jobs, the odds are already stacked against you. In the event that you're a native speaker of any of the above languages (as in bilingual in English and Italian/Japanese/Korean/French), you may have a good chance. However, most interpretation jobs go to people who speak both languages natively.

There is a chance that you can do freelance translation, and that is almost always paid by the word. For someone who can sit down and really work on piece after piece of material with a high level of proficiency in the language, this is a good thing. The real money is apparently in show business, but as I said above, those jobs go to the true bilinguals.
