I never thought I would say this, but damn, horse meat is a lot better than I thought. I'm quite adventurous when it comes to food, trying things like ostrich, alligator, or even dog (not as good as people say). However, I've always had a particular aspersion to horse meat, I don't know why. Maybe it's that scene in The Godfather where they put a horse head in the guy's blanket but I just never saw horse meat as something you can eat.
That all changed when, at a party this winter break, they were serving these tacos... And don't get me wrong, the sauce was amazing too, the peppers, the lettuce, all crisp and fresh. But the most amazing part was the meat. Good lord it tasted so succulent, a hint of sweetness, so lean yet tender. My God I don't think I've had a better taco in my life. Of course, I had to ask the host what she put in it and the answer shocked me. Horse meat. Wow, what the fuck, who knew horse meat could taste so good? I, of course, tried horse meat with just about everything after that and found it quite boring overall, never getting the same delicious high I got while at that party. Although it does taste quite good with a cold glass of milk to wash it down, it will never be the same as those tacos... God those tacos were good...
And the reason I'm blogging this is because this has come to disrupt my Teamliquid experience. Now, whenever I look up at the banner, I think mmmm Tacos...

Some meats are just too gamy.

This reminds me of when I was in grade 7 and this girl in my class had a pet horse, but then it died. Everyday for months she came to school with horse jerky. Something about that just never seemed right to me.

If you tell that to a mongolian, you would be dead.
But I would like to try horse. And blue mountain oysters as well.

and they eat horses too, no taboo there. Not their favorite but its nothing unusual

I never really liked horse meat much. Moose and venison though, simply amazing.
I want to try human meat sometime. :p

Damn someone beat me to the Mongolians drinking horse blood and stuff.

Venison is good stuff, too bad its not widely available in the States.

Horse meat is damn good. I hate how they never have it at sushi shops in America.

Well, you should have asked her what part of the horse it was. The cut of meat makes a huge difference in flavor, texture, and the way to cook it.

What do you guys think about test tube meat?

I don't mind it... the thought of eating chemicals freaks alot of people out though. To be honest, we ingest so many artificial flavours and colours and preservatives, that jumping straight to everything artificial actually isn't a huge leap.

I've tried just about every type of meat out there, I even had spiders and rats during a China visit.
And I must say horse meat tastes like shit. Maybe it was the cut, but it was very dry, tough, and had a weirdly unpleasant scent if it isn't heavily flavored.

Yeah maybe they gave you some retarded horsemeat. Last time I was in Shenzhen I had some really good horse meat at a benihana's style sushi place.

i like bison meat or buffalo for that matter. I can think of nothing more manly than eating a buffalo/bison....maybe a bear?

Wow, I want to try horse...
Some of you guys are such adventurous eaters. I've pretty much only had your run of the mill...beef, pork, chicken, etc... :|

jessusss.. note to self: I am going tred with care if I encounter a starving tl.netter, I might just end up being dinner..

Ground horse is a good substitute for ground beef in things like pasta sauce - and cheaper.
|
To be honest although cannibalism is something horrible i'm pretty sure that human flesh isn't bad probably similar to pork i guess. I mean some tribes in Africa eat apes and they share 98+% of their genes with us.

Anyone tried monkey brains? You know the kind where they screw the monkeys skull in place and crack the kicking and screaming monkey skull open in front of you. Then pour boiling oil into its brain cavity and you just dig in? I want to have this experience somewhat... if not for the uncanny resemblance to a human, and the mentally disturbing images that are sure to haunt you for years. Still... it'd make a kickass party story

I tried donkey meat in China once. It was really tasty. It seemed a lot more spicy and peppery than "normal meat".

horse is good, considered one of the better meats for steak, and because humans somehow feel bad about eating horse it's also much less expensive.
|

Never tried horse meat, but been eating dog meat all my life(2-3 times a year). Nothing beat the taste of having dog meat with a few friends and drinking some vodka ) Recommend dog meat to everyone, no offense to dog lover though.

From the best thread of sherdog. That's what happens when you eat horse meat.

This blog made me wish I didn't already eat.

I've had it raw as part of a piece of sushi when I was in Japan. The texture was slightly more rough than that of beef, but it had a lot of flavour, as far as I remember.
