Well, I've currently got a Hewlett-Packard w2207 which was given to me for Christmas in 2008. It has served me well but I'm thinking of upgradong to a newer monitor.

Reasons are;

1) I hate the 1680x1050 resolution given to me. It feels weird not being able to see 1080p in full resolution.

2) I want to utilize the HDMI port on my laptop.

That being said, I want a monitor with;

1) A HDMI Port
2) Bigger than 22'
3) Native resolution of 1980x1080
4) Doesn't break the bank.

Anyway, the questions are;

1) Are there any clear visual differences between VGA and HDMI?
2) If so, how much of a difference is there?
3) Will HD/1080p videos be much better quality if watched through HDMI than VGA?
4) If I buy a monitor, will it come with a HDMI cable?

Think that is about it.

HDMI is DVI + sound so it's different from VGA. A HDMI port can be connected to a DVI one and vice versa. Regarding the quality, it's very much noticeable and VGA often cause interference with laptops.

As for the monitor, I'd recommend a Samsung syncmaster 245T
Oh wait the resolution is 1900x1200 nvm

And the cables are quite expensive, especially if you want long ones so they usually won't come with the monitor.

P2350 Samsung is a decent cheap screen but no hdmi though

Keep in mind that HDMI is just DVI + audio. So if it's only picture quality that you are after the any 24 inch screen will do.

HDMI is what the shop make their money on so you won't get one with the box (most of the time)

Check out some Taiwanese models. Some of them are good value / price but their warranty are shocking.

I dont know why manufacturers make 23 inch monitors but meh. Ive been using Hanns-G for awhile, their good quality at a great price. But I would never recommend using the speakers on these monitors, I tried it on mine, its pretty bad. Sometimes you assume they just shoved it in there for extra cash.

Hanns-G baby!

I would also get a monitor lower than 5ms, it can be noticeable when your gaming.

You can even get 22 inch monitors with 1080p. But really, for monitors, 1080p is so...

Should I just buy one of them Network Streaming thingies then? (Something like the WDTV Live). I have a 68cm Flatscreen CRT sitting in my room as well Would it just be better to buy that than a new monitor (and save a bit of money).

I read somewhere WD TV doesnt have built-in network streaming and requires some fine-tweaking while at it.

range from 4$ to 20$ for really good cables. Refresh rate/transfer rate on the cables don't really matter. That shit happens inside the TV/Monitor.

anything less than 42 (correct me if i'm wrong) inch screen will not tell the different between 1080i and 1080p.

Modern LCD TVs come with HDMI port anyway.

WD Live is pretty good.

I think you will need something 23''+. Since its cheap anyway.
Look for it on Newegg. I am not gonna recommend any specific brand here because the choices are so vast and most of them are same quality.
But there are few things you should pay attention before buying:
1. Make sure buy the 16 : 9 ratio one.
2. Make sure that your laptop graphic card is capable of playing 1920x1080. If your laptop has a onboard graphic card, it will most likely can not play lag-less at 1080p.
3. Monitors usually dont come with HDMI
4. Dony buy cheap HDMI cable, since HDMI interface is very sensitive of the quality of HDMI cable.
For HDMI I recommend you buy Sony's.
5. VGA and HDMI in someway is identical proven that you have your source at 1080p but HDMI should have better colors.
6. The last thing is, unless you are watching bluray from your laptop(which is unlikely) I dont think 1080p video is worth it( assume that you download these video from the internet). Just download the 720p one. 720p is a big jump from DVD quality video as well and It put much less pressure on the laptop .

I will say this though, the monster cables are really nice for my electric guitar.

Don't waste the money on a digital medium like HDMI, it's just 1's and 0's and it either works or it doesn't. Now for sending analog signals from your electric guitar to a vintage vacuum tube amp, I'd recommend the extra dough.

Yeah, I don't think there's any difference between expensive and cheap digital cables, its pretty much impossible to get a bit loss.

Cables do come in different grades but for your home PC stuff, it's completely nonsense to spend $200.

i can for sure tell the difference on my 23" 1080p monitor. things are smoother in 1080p (for gaming at least) because all the lines are shown on a single pass rather than being interlaced with two passes. closest thing i can compare it to off the top of my head would be going from an old CRT SDTV to a 240hz HDTV, the "animation" or movement appears a lot more fluid and lifelike, even with the same footage.

edit: although i should say that in 1080i, things appear a bit brighter to me, even with the same contrast settings on the monitor, and in GTA IV it seems it's less blurry or the motion blur has less of an effect or something, but the jaggies are more noticeable than in 1080p (for PS3).

http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/34579/122868.html is an informative article on the matter.

You have received a lot of good information here already so it may not be worth the click.

Not sure why it would be weird seeing 1080p in a slightly smaller resolution though, but I'm an old man whose eyes blur everything anyways.

Except the interlacing that is inherent in the video in the first place I think.

I reccomend ASUS monitors, theyre sick and the prices are incredibly 'forgiving' you get a lot and you don't have to pay half as much as the huge brand name HP etc stuff

HDMI , and almost all good monitors have the risk of display lag, which is a serious fault for gamers, so make sure there isn't any on monitors you buy.
the monitor i got (ASUS VW246H) is used at most fighting game tournaments, which like starcraft require precision so of course no display lag, great quality and even greater price.

You'll be fine with any 1.3a HDMI cable. (I typed a huge paragraph on AWG but then I deleted it realizing it was pretty much pointless. All you really need to know is it refers to the thickness of the wires inside the cable. The smaller the number the thicker the wires which translates to a better connection over long distances. For your purposes, you'll be perfect with a 1.3a 24-28 AWG cable.)

There is absolutley no difference between a $10 cable and a $200 cable save maybe a few design differences.. Like someone said earlier, it's all 0's and 1's.

I bought this guy a few days ago.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024004&p_id=3663&seq=1&format=2

Do you have a laptop or a desktop? If it's a laptop you might want to invest in a >10 foot cable so you can connect to to HDTV's around your house or at ur friends houses to watch movies or whatever.

1080p is just sex is video form; it is so beautiful :X Using purevideo any modern nVidia laptop can handle 1080p; I haven't tried ATI's equivalent but I'd assume it is the same. Honestly, I'd say the opposite. 720p and a high quality dvd (~480p) aren't that different. Why piss around if you're not gonna go for real HD ,

1080p in software is dangerous; my expensive work macbook pro can't play 1080p stuff because it can't do hardware decode (rather, drivers are not supporting it; it's there in hardware).

---

On topic, just look on newegg and find what you want. You can also get cheap HDMI cables there (HDMI is digital, you don't need expensive cables... lol). 1920x1200 monitors aren't bad either; that's 16x10 so you can have extra room for player controls if that's what you want. Unfortunately, larger 1080p monitors are a lot more expensive than the 22 inch ones. I can't help you there; I've been wanting to get a 35-50 inch HDTV/monitor for a while now, but they're all like $700

I bought the Samsung T240HD last month, and I really like it. It's a 24" with a built-in TV tuner and speakers, DVI/HDMI/composite inputs, 1920x1200 but it does 16: 9 just fine too. The refresh rate is at least as good, if not better, than my "2ms" 226BW.
