Hey guys, although I have a good job and steady income, I ran into some cash troubles this month.
I spent quite a bit of money last month, buying a new gaming i7 comp along with a $500 outlet mall shopping madness.
Being the accountant that I am, naturally I pay my bills on time to avoid interest charges. I just paid my phone and utility bills, and plus I had to dish out another $900 for rent (1st + last month deposit). And now... I am left with $7.52 in my bank account.
I just moved to a new location, so I have absolutely no food in my fridge. I just woke up (4:52pm haha), and I'm starving. The $7.52 has to last me until the 14th (8days... X_X) which is my next pay date.
And no, I don't want to go to a cash-advance money mart, because they charge ridiculous interest (10-15%). I also must drive to work everyday, round trip requires about 6L of gas so that's 6x8 = 48 L. Currently I have about 30L left in my gas tank, so I need to somehow make about $15 to pay for the extra 18L of gas. Also, I'm by myself in a new city, so no friends/relatives/GF here to help me out.
How do I survive on less than a dollar a day, 94 cents a day to be exact? Advice, criticism, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not hiring you.
Don't try to survive for days with seven and a half dollars. I would never let myself get into your position and I can't even imagine how I would deal with it.
I'm pretty sure people can survive for weeks without food.
7.52 is at the least 7 ramen packages right? So long as you have water, no problem. (Maybe throw in an apple or something - I'm not sure how quickly scurvy sets in)
(But obviously the reasonable approach is to return something/sell something)
ya ramen is .22 cents a piece..so you can probably live off like 2 of these a day + tap water, that'll cost you about 3.75 with tax...then you can use the rest for gas and your set...good luck yo
grilled cheese will last you at three meals a day at least 3 days, an apple a day keeps the dr away, and tea is good, but you could get more bread or something instead.
ill assume you do nothing but play starcraft all day so this should sustain you just fine
Hahaha, that's awful man. Yeah, I do find it quite humorous that you got into this situation as an accountant, but moneyshitstorms generally happen to everyone at some point... Self-inflicted or otherwise. =P
Just do what everyone else here said, go trade a game in somewhere, sell something, or take some of that shit back.
I mean I don't know why you're not just getting a loan of about $100 from a bank or a credit union. That's the obvious solution here. You don't need any other advice...
if you dont have the budget to buy a top of the line computer AND go $500 shopping at a mall then don't buy that much crap dude.
start keeping track of your income, your expenses, and how much you usually spend on food and then the excess is what you can spend on shit for yourself. it's part of that whole "growing up" thingy.

I had credit cards in the past but cancelled them - philosophy is to never spend the money that I don't have.
And no, I'm usually very careful with my spendings, it's just I didn't expect rent and utilities to be so much for the new place, I have roughly $8000 in mutual funds and TFSAs, but those are untouchable at least on a short term.
I'm 20, I look pretty young so I might just wear my baggy high school clothes and offer snow shoveling services to neighbors as a teenager or something.
A bag of 5kg rice is only $5, plus I can always buy some instant noodles which are 4 for $1.
Get ketchup packets/sauce packets from fast food places. Mix the ketchup packets with water for tomato soup. If you can get that 94 cents to 99 cents a day or a little more I'm sure you could find something with a lot of calories on the $1 menu to make you last.
Go to the mall/food outlet and see if they have any free food samples.
Sell stuff/return stuff as people have mentioned.
Although honestly, if you need that plus $15 more for gas it seems like you're not going to be able to just squeeze by. Most likely you're going to have to sell something, borrow or make money somehow.
Its not possible, you have to sell something or w/e... I´ve actually had the most cost-efficient day ever (saving money for my trip) and spend: Breakfast: Oat meal with some milk - 20 cents Lunch: 2 packs of noodles (theye were 30 cents a piece so 60 + 20 carrots 60 cents) = 1,20 dinner: Pork on sale with "potatoes" (raggmunk, dunno what its called in english) = 1,30 Total: 2, 70 dollars
Thats about how cheap you can get it if you want to still be able to think straight, at least in sweden!

lol
best accountant/financial advisor/$ guy ever bro sweet
Oh something my 7th grade science teacher told us about, you can go to a fast food restraunt and get a bunch of packets of ketchup, and then go home and boil water and make a form of tomato soup "Hobo Soup".
If it's raining, you could go out at night with a flashlight and collect nightcrawlers (really big worms that are coming out of the ground to avoid drowning) and sell them (still live) to a bait shop. He was a great teacher.
Enlist to an online BW tournament and make a thread on TL saying that you need $100 (or more) in order not to starve to death until the tournament begins. Appeal to TLers generosity in said thread. Enjoy.
Garage sale. Slap up some posters around the neighbourhood / local schools / mall, then set up outside your place a saturday or something. Get rid of some old junk like cds you don't listen to, clothes you don't use / don't fit / don't want, games you're done with, gadgets you've picked up but never used, books you've read.
1. You are poor and starving but you're actually not. 2. You are a recovering alcoholic but you're actually not. 3. Your girlfriend is having a baby but she's actually not.
You could pawn your new computer to get you threw the two weeks. The pawn shop will hold the comp for the two weeks and give u a loan against it. If you take like a 200$ loan you should only have to give them like a extra 20-40$ bucks in two weeks when u get payed.
me and brendan spent about 2 weeks with literally no money after we spent it on beer in argentina. eventually we got the british embassy to visit us and this guy gave us 15 or 30 peso from his own pocket. we spent it on beer and bread (oiled toast, or fried bread for a week)
i dont remember how to make fried bread (drunk so dont remember), but its tastey enough
Buy a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter. With what is left get some fruit that is on sale. That should last you a while and is healthy/balanced enough.

True for 1 and 3, not so much for 2. In any case, your point? Sounds pretty normal to me

P.S. Back with ramen, water boiling. 4 for $1.13 at the dollar store.
P.S.S. Found some change, $3.25 in total.
P.S.S.S. Found some leftover HK dollars from the summer, about ~140, converted and I've got just under $20 dollars.

I think I'll survive no problems now, thanks.
If 1 is true then why would you put 'starving' in the title? Sounds like you're just bullshitting to gain attention.
Somehow I think this is a troll. If he was a legit accountant there is no way he would be that stupid. And if this is not a troll it's incredibly pathetic and sad.
I find it really hard to believe you apparently don't have a savings account or you dipped into it. We're in less than great economic times and you're sitting on $7.52? Really? I thought it was common practice to have at least a few thousand sitting around in case of an emergency, like a hospital visit that health insurance won't cover? Or you lose your job? ..
see if a co worker or boss can let you borrow a hunderd dollars for food and gas, tell them your situation obv. as far as food goes, sounds like me. Buy lots of top ramen 20 cents a pack, then buy some frozen peas and corn, an onion, sriracha rooster sauce, potatoes, some kind of meat, and maybe cilantro. Cook up some spicy stew
Pull money out of thin air with credit cards, Why would you spend all that money on sales and on a i7 when you know your gonna wind up with such a inadequate amount of cash? And being an accountant too?
Nice recipe CM, but I substitute chilies instead of squeezing the hot sauce into soup. And I never knew that hot sauce was so popular amongst everyone here. Oh and the garlic one isnt that great.
XD Way to waste your money on stuff you probably didn't need at the moment. Ramen Noodles is probably the best way to go for now (like everyone else has been saying)....

get money wired to you by parents or starve to death. Pretty much sums it up..
On January 07 2010 08:31 AtlaS wrote: Dude ramen noodles. Honestly, those things are so ridiculously inexpensive. you can buy a years worth of ramen and spend like 50 bucks.
eh, it wouldn't be that unreasonable for 1 person to eat off of $1/day for a short period of time. Short because the food you would be able to afford wouldn't be very healthy.
I'd start w/ something like 2 cheap loaves of bread ($2-3) like 10 Ramen Noodle packets ($2) and maybe some cheap ass lunch meat, or forget the bread and go w/ a bag of beans/rice. Perhaps buy a really cheap piece of meat, and a bag of beans and mince the meat up, and make 4-5 meals out of that.

its okay to call someone an attention whore with intent, if you actually use your words to make people understand why someone is attention whoring. its not okay to just say "you're this or that" without backing it up. else, whats the point of posting? i'm not saying you're wrong, just that you need to realise that you need to work on your communication skills, else whats the point? (you end up having the same value as "lol" posts, for example)

Put it all on Pokerstars and play 5nl for at least 5 minutes... should be relatively easy and low variance to turn it into $100 within 6-8 hours

$4 per week for a family of 6. $2/3 per week for one person. Just be a pro and use coupons and shit to maximize your money. You get to keep all the stuff you bought as well! Wohoo!
1. Get a knife for 5 bucks (if any) 2. Spend the rest on a pack of cigarettes (if not, on a couple of sticks) 3. Rob with knife 4. ... 5a. PROFIT! 5b. In case you get caught, stay in jail and you're provided with free food. Smoke cigarettes.

It must be really hot there cause that lady is seriously wearing very skimpy clothing.
Do you not have friends/family who can PAYPAL you money? Do you not have a credit card?
I just don't understand how you came up with no alternatives to surviving 8 days with $7.5
That being said, I would buy 2 loafs of bread, a small jar of peanut butter, and a small jar of jam. That should be under $7.5, and that can probably last you 8 days.

Using a credit card is the fastest and easiest way. Its just using it to buy food for a couple of days. How much trouble can it be if the guy just spent $500 on shopping, paid phone + utilities, and paid off rent? Not to mention the money he spent building computers. Its understandable to not use a credit card when you can't meet the payment/pay date. He can when he gets his paycheck.
Maybe he's telling the truth but it doesn't look so by his post. Some would agree with me.
