Death to eye candy. All it does is slow things down.

hey man i do never combine, quick launch, small icons, windows classic theme too!
and dont blame the os for your slow laptop man

I have a windows 7 disc right beside my computer and I'm waiting till it works fine with Starcraft before installing it.

SC works 100% fine here
I like the new taskbar, it's basically like a dock so now I have one less program to install. I recommend turning off Aero though, I found that it really overheated my laptop (no I don't have a crappy computer) and of course, turning off UAC.

For me there several things that really didn't like in W7 (using XP SP2 now).
1) there is no way to make DOS command prompt window go fullscreen - it stops me from playing any rougelikes (ie.: DoomRL or ADOM). 2) Searching is still sooo slow, thou it's better than original XP's search, but WHY can't they make it right is beyond me.(actually W7 search is good) On XP I use program designed to work in windows 95 and 98 - PowerDesk (freeware) that can search 10! times faster than normal XP search. 3) On a somewheat decent laptop ( P8400 2GBram ) *without* Aero interface, XP starts faster 4) I'm one of this "lucky guys" who have to keep Personalization window on when starting SC, for colors not to go berzerk.

Although I'm not using Aero either, so that might be the reason. Yes windows+tab flip thing is an aero feature, disabling aero disables some of the stuff in windows 7

If you don't want eye candy why aren't you running windows 98 that's even more stable and reliable and faster then XP. There is more windows 7 then ignorant fools realise.
You slower boot is likely to a shitty HDD and bios, my boot for windows 7 x64 is 11 seconds 6 of those seconds are looking at a bois boot up everything and i'm just running seagate 7200.12 hdd's. Searches are faster in windows 7 (near instant for me) i have a proper ACHI set up and have indexing turned on along with multiple hdd's searching takes little time, that's HDD dependent and settings dependent.
Anyways windows 7 handles threaded apps better. and windows 8 which will be in the works soon will handle it even more better. Matters little to a laptop but running a i7 920 with 8 threads you can tell the difference. You'll notice larger and larger performance drops as more cores are introduced. but seeing as you run laptops and a play dos rouge like games i say you care a little about new games and the things peopel care about.
Also The P8400 is a decent cpu for a laptop but it's a powersaver it runs off of 24w or something and 2gigs is scraping by now of days in terms of ram.

For number 1, it's easy just right click the top of the window and go to properties. Change the screen size and buffer size.

If your hardware supports Aero do not disable it for performance sake. Running on Aero on hardware that supports is faster than Basic. Aero uses hardware acceleration but Basic does not.

Searches are faster in windows 7 (near instant for me) Oops i didn't see W7 had better serching than Vista (i didnt actually check it), so i take my flaming back , W7 search is really good.
Actually i didn't know W7 on new hardware can start in 11s, nice performance

Yeah, it's true i don't play new mainstream games anymore, so for me XP is sufficient for everything i do. (ie: SC, Osu, photoshop, 3d design programs, indie games, browsing net with 50-100open tabs, video-editing) and Win7 interface is too unintuitive.
@GogoKodo
Well there is no full screen option in properities, and doing alt-enter gives me an error message "this sytem does not support full screen mode" (W7 Ultimate)

Windows7 has been pretty good for me, loads quick and I find the taskbar intuitive (I use firefox tabs extensively, so I never really have a lot of windows open at one time anyways).
I do have one issue though, and it's my mouse scroll not working. I can click it as my middle button and it works, but scrolling of any kind doesn't work for me. I have a ladybug logitech mini optical from way back when. I got the latest SetPoint driver, which is the recommended driver by logitech, but it didn't fix my scrolling issue as of now.
Just a warning to possible old logitech mouse users.

erm if you're running it on a virtual machine of course it's going to be slower <_< but 98 is pretty dated, and xp is getting there if you're using hardware from the last few years.
In general Windows 7's compatibility is also really good, I haven't had a single program that didn't run more or less perfectly on 7/xp mode/dosbox. If you spend some time to get used to it the interface is also really intuitive. I also like transparency effects ^_^. if you have gchat open then when it blinks the title bar for a new message you can see it through the all the other windows.

Actually from my experiences with VirtualPC it should be slightly faster due to faster booting time, (once, for testing i installed XP in VPC running on another XP and there was no startup difference aside bootup.)

I installed Windows 7 on another partition and have only loaded it up 3 or so times.. I just couldn't be bothered to learn the layout and disable all the graphical crap when it seemingly had no worthwhile advantages over XP.
But people seem to love Win7 here.. why?
