How do I explain progaming to people?

For example my older brother looked over my shoulder and asked me about the Ret2Courage thread, so I explained what Courage was ... blah blah blah .... and had some difficulties.

The main problem I come up against is breaking that image of progamers being antisocial nerds who only play computer games all day long, installed by that horrible National Geographic documentary about WCG 2005.

Any help and points would be appreciated, and does anyone have any form of statistics about how big the fanbases for the more famous progamers are? In my experience being able to cite statistics of "this progamer has ____ female fans" can be convincing.

Thanks, + 100th post

Isn't the general consensus that progamers are socially awkward nerds who play starcraft all day

whether or not flash makes lots of money doesn't change the fact that he's a nerd who plays video games 10-13 hours a day.

I don't defend anything. It's all in how you say it - you can convince people that easting feces is cool if you believe it to your core. If you try to defend it then you are suggesting that it needs to be defended. It doesn't.

It is what it is.

I've always equated my passion for SC:BW with some people for their weekly "poker night" or chess matches.

For me it has always kept me in contact with my two brothers and gives us a way to interact beyond telephone and email when we live 3500 miles apart.

Now, then it comes to people mocking the pro-gaming aspect.

Eh, to each their own.

Different strokes for different folks.

I usually assume people just won't understand, unless they're a fellow abstract enthusiast. If they're interested I'll show them a couple videos and explain a bit. But unless they are predisposed to enjoying that sort of thing, they usually give the old. "Oh thats cool" and keep going.

Pretty much this. SC isn't any less legitimate than any other popular sport.

I think progaming is great, and while people may not understand it, for the top few percent, that are making bank, enjoying what they do, and have job opportunities in the industry available in the future, it's a great thing. Sure they have to put their relationships on hold while they're active gamers, if they truly want to be at the top, but once they have their fame and fortune, it's probably worth it to them, as did something they love.

It's a bit harder to explain for the people who aren't at the top of the game, yet still spending their days practicing. Lower pay and less recognition, having to forgo schooling and starting a career path sooner, can be brutal. Sure, they may still secure a spot in the industry, but it may not be worth it in the end. That's just my uninformed view on things though; it may be different.

That takes care of the social aspect of it, as for explaining it otherwise, you just need to convey that it's a sport, in its own right, and quite similar to watching/enjoying football/soccer/boxing/etc.

Why do you have to defend yourself to anyone? If people look down on you for something you enjoy, fuck them. Pretty simple. If you enjoy video games, hang around other people who do too. If you're talking about a girl, pretty much all of them know that they have to put up with games these days. It's just a matter of not making her feel second fiddle.

Sad but true. People as a group don't care about truth, only face.

Savior would get mobbed in downtown Seoul, at least in his prime.
See Jaedong's shoe commercial
Hwasin's modeling for mens clothing
Having lots of gfs (Bisu good example) making lots of money (Bisu good example, 300K)

I think it's more the idea of 'nerd' that has to change, and it is, very quickly.

"I watch professional Korean Starcraft."

You don't have to sugarcoat it, defend it, explain it, or anything. It's not a big deal.

In my experience, when I tell friends about it, instead of deciding that I'm a loser, they just figure that there must be more to it than meets the eye. But maybe I just have cool friends =)

just don't 'jump' on your friend when he says "lol u watch progaming???"

just take it in a cool chill out confident manner and say "Yeah"

And when your friend starts laughing, stare blankly at his eyes and just smile until he stops laughing

eventually he'll say "can I watch too?"

Same. I even got my friend who never plays SC to watch TSL with me. Of course there was alcohol involved, but it still counts IMO. He still talks about it fondly to this day and asks me when the next one is :D finally I can tell him RIGHT NOW :@@!!!

I was basically the 4th commentator those times though, because I would be giving back story and opinions on every player which I think helped to make it interesting for him. I made Draco out to be some evil pretentious bastard so it made the finals pretty drat exciting when JF came out from behind.
