So my roommates and I, have gotten into the habit of greeting and calling each other using the N word, and we are not black. Don't know how it started, don't know why we stuck with it, we're not racist at all, but we just did.
Anyway, today I went to the library to study, and saw my roomie sitting at a table, so I walk over and said to him, in a very audible volume, "what up niggah" out of habit. About 20 heads turned my direction, two of them black.
What happened afterwards could only be described as a very, very anguishing experience.
Just one of those "don't do it" life lessons that might be quite helpful to know.

Well, couldn't really have been helped, I suppose. I mean, you would never intentionally speak aloud in the library. One of those moments you act unconsciously and screw you over.

You are in a black school?

I should really stop saying neeeeegaa whenever I'm frustrated also.

I use nigga all the time with friends and my brothers. I live in Chicago so I've heard it used so many times that it's now part of my vocabulary. That's happened to me once. I was in a buffet with my friend and I was like "Take it easy on the chicken nigga", or something.
I felt slightly embarrassed, but I'll argue that "nigga" is like "dude" nowadays.
|
Please describe exactly what happened
|
my friends always look around to make sure theres no one black around before saying nigga

Me and my brother always joke around and say, "you black asshole". I've said it in public lots of times and gotten weird stares, hah.

I told my Asian buddy, after he made a Jewish joke, to "build me a railroad" just as an Asian waitress walked up. Fun times. Fortunately we already had our food. Regardless, people need to calm down more instead of getting all angry. A joke between friends is nothing to get pissy over.

The fear of being labeled as racist in USA is so damn annoying. Who cares if you call someone nigga in a friendly context, you aren't really doing anything wrong.

My sister has a Bluetooth console in her car. We decided to register my phone with it, and we had just dropped my best friend off (Kingkosi), so when it came time to name the phone connection, I just randomly blurted out "BLACK PEOPLE". It's still registered as such, and my sister has told me a story or two about her cycling through the phones when she had people, some of them black, in the car.

I'm glad you're here to tell people what they should and shouldn't get upset over.

One of my friends does this, and he says there was a court case over this to justify the distinction between the N word into in -ga and ending in -ger. Still inappropriate, though.

Yeah...ive done something similar. Somehow got into the habit of saying like "aww niggahh" or "aww niggerr!!" when something bad happened. Just by myself or whatever, playing a video game. However, my sister and her half black boyfriend and I ordered pizza. When I realized the guy forgot tomatoes, I instinctively said "aw nigger no tomatoes" or something to that effect. DEAD silence. Slowly all three of us looked up and started laughing hysterically. Nothing bad came of it, but I made sure to rid myself of the habit to avoid such future awkward situations.
Edit: Pretty sure I started saying it cause of a boondogs episode, when a pimp or someone says it in a hysterical manner [which is how I always did it, mimicking whoever it was.]

There's a Korean kid I'm good friends with at school. I'm not Jewish, but I could probably pass for one. He calls me Jewish and I call him Chinese. I think that being overly sensitive is kind of too bad. Political Correctness has made everyone so damn uptight.
I also said, "Hey negro" to my friend when a black kid was standing next to him. Awkward...

interesting... my dominican friend does that for the lols

Is this gonna turn into "Haha I go to the same school as you and I was there when you said this!"?

while i understand joking around with nigga - i do it, it's funny - i also understand how nigger can be super upsetting. the word doesn't exactly have a good history and, let's be honest, it's not all history.
anyway, racist humor can be funny. some people ought to lighten up about it. on the other hand, people making the jokes should be sensitive to the fact that there are some legitimate reasons to hate that word

i agree, people can't just say stupid things and just pass it off as a joke.
say it amongst your friends but the fact many of you slip those words in public where it can be very offensive should indicate its not a good time to change the meaning of the word.
you can't just call someone a "gay faggot" and tell them to relax beacuse its a just a "joke"...

Did you actually get into a fight or something or was it all shame?

it's much more offensive to me when i hear people say things along the lines of: " people of those races should xxxx" than when some white kid goes up to another and says "sup nigga"
derogatory words are just that, due to the intention behind them sure some words have history, and people are wary of their use now a days, but that is only going to propagate the stigma.
edit: and lol at white people being called crackers

Ya so I was talking with this black guy about trying to get him to go over to my friends to play SF after a SF4 night. I could give him a ride there but my friend was unwilling to give him a ride back home so I'm like well if darren wasn't being a nigger.
Then was like oh fuck
Some awkward indeed

Let's not lose sight here
Nigger is conditionally offensive word in that if the speaker is black it is not seen in a negative context but when spoken by pretty much anyone else, it is seen as a very offensive by most people.
I think Americans in general are always afraid to step on toes but mostly because you see so many cases of Americans getting pissed off over what many of us may think as a trivial matter (and I'm a Korean-American)
Personally I find it absurd that the word Nigger has become what it has, it really is the only word of it's kind that is conditionally offensive. I'm not ignorant of the fact that there are still racists out there who use the word hatefully (take Michael Richards for example). But I think people should look at the context before making it a conditional response to get all offended. If they don't want other people using the word they shouldn't use it to refer to other black people because it's hard to keep one word in such polarity in terms of it's positive/negative connotation.
Does this mean you should go out and start calling all your friends niggers? Fuck no. Society may have come up with some silly rules but you just gotta (no not skate) play by the rules, cause seriously, you can live without saying nigger for the rest of your life.

a cracker is one who cracks the whip, so ya its implying that you are a slave driver.
|
Oh wow... I guess i'm gonna start saying cracker a lot less now, but still they should have used a word more obvious to connect with cracking a whip instead of a wheat snack.

are you serious? I never knew that's what it meant. "I can't believe you just inferred that I am in an authoritative position over you, I'm so offended!"

My black friend always says they call us crackers because we love cheese so much we eat it with just crackers. I know its the slave driver thing but he denies it everytime I bring it up and says its about cheese. Pretty funny

I'm just wondering why in the world you find it even necessary to be saying "sup nigga" or other words with a touchy history. Sure, maybe it would be nice if people could simply choose not to be offended (easier said than done) when hearing derogatory racial slurs, but wouldn't it be easier just to not say it in the first place, given the historical baggage that these kinds of words represent?

They just might be offended! Actually there is no positive connotation with gay faggot. As in no one calls their friends gay faggot in an endearing way.
