If you've been following my blogs, God knows why, you know that I am picking up from like a decade or so ago with re-learning C++. Having successfully refreshed my knowledge on C with a simple compiler and a great book, I decided to move on to the next big thing, DirectX. I got me a big bundle of books from piratebay and, recognizing that all of them were at least three or four years old, I also got a copy of Visual C++ 6.0.

Everything was awesome, full of confidence I dived right into what at first glance plus a google appeared to be the best book of the bundle. I freakin moonwalked myself through the first theoretic chapters about vectors and matrices thinking I was the shit right up to the practical part. The practical part (which judging by some skimming surely cannot comprise more than 1% of this book) had a few holes to say the least. It was like teaching someone to fly a 747 by slamming their head into the instruments yelling "goddamnit, fly!" Skimming further it seemed to me the chapter about creating a 3D object should really come before the chapters about rendering or manipulating it, etc. Guess its a first edition.

ANYWAY, I obviously wouldn't be writing a blog at this hour if it weren't for the fact that I need something, from you. Basically what I'm hoping for is a hint or two about a good book that is not only tried and true in terms of pedagogical merit but concerns directx9 as well and is preferably no more than 2 years old. Obviously a new edition of an old book is coolio as long as you can vouch for the content.

Much obliged <3

Also, I remember reading a manga like a few months ago, maybe weeks, my handle on time is just a bummer, about one perverted guy and two ditzy but sweet girls. The usual suspects in other words, only this was like halfway between adult and shoujo, not porn but not tenchi muyo. Its a manga about the girls for some reason getting into really ridiculous situations which require them to show their breasts and/or asses to people, usually without people realizing they are looking at t&a, and the guy taking full advantage of this.

One chapter was about the girls running a puppet show, only the puppets broke like halfway through the show and for some reason - this is what really made me laugh - they figure they have no choice but to use their breasts and asses for puppets. Like, seriously super weird manga. Another chapter was about the girls getting into a box with holes in the top, and for some reason they were compelled to put their breasts up the holes, prompting the guy to draw mole faces on them and have passing kids whack em.

So yeah, absolutely ridiculous scenarios, I've never wished I could read japanese as much as I did when I read that manga, just to get half a clue as to what they were thinking. But unfortunately I've totally forgotten what the name of the manga was.

Anyone?

hey dude, i know nothing about directx programming but i do program in opengl and i can tell you it is very easy to learn. Im no expert, just a computing science student. Rightnow I'm learning GLSL (shading language) and its so damn easy and the results are amazing.

C++ + opengl + glsl is the way to go if you wanna learn how to render really cool stuff in the screen, or even making games for fun.

No idea about the manga.

see ya

Well I've gotten the impression that while OpenGL is easy to develop, DirectX gives you the best results, and is supported by the most graphics card manufacturers. Afaik, OpenGL is all but deprecated.

College Freshmen learning Java here.... Still reviewing methods and loops LOL!

Ive seen C++ and it looks difficult, but Im sure C++ is needed after I finish with Java.

Try a ebook called 'Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 10'. It has theory and practical examples/exercises. Quite interesting to say the least. Most of the pre-requisite math is not hard and you probably would know it already.
