this isnt much of a information cause 1024x768 is still the median for the sample. Maybe 57% use higher resolutions then 1024x768 but under these ppl 10% use 1440x900, 5% 1600x1200 etc. The statistics you showed doesnt really say 1024x768 is in minority, its actually exactly the other way around

I suppose you mean modus/mode instead of median. In which case, logically you are correct based on the information that I posted here, but if you looked at the wikipedia source i linked (which has other sources too:-p) it has a more detailed break-down of resolutions:
XGA eXtended Graphics Array 1024 768 17.17%
WXGA Widescreen eXtended Graphics Array 1152 864 3.06%
WXGA Widescreen eXtended Graphics Array 1280 768 0.96%
WXGA Widescreen eXtended Graphics Array 1280 800 8.22%
SXGA Super eXtended Graphics Array- 1280 960 2.01%
SXGA Super eXtended Graphics Array 1280 1024 21.26%
WXGA Widescreen eXtended Graphics Array 1366 768 1.81%
WSXGA Widescreen Super eXtended Graphics Array 1440 900 11.44%
UXGA Ultra eXtended Graphics Array 1600 1200 1.13%
WSXGA Widescreen Super eXtended Graphics Array Plus 1680 1050 18.12%
HD-1080 Full High Definition 1920 1080 3.80%
WUXGA Widescreen Ultra eXtended Graphics Array 1920 1200 5.43%
Other 2.57%
the modus of screen resolutions today is clearly 1280x1024.
While 1024x768 is still strong second, the 57% of higher resolutions means that its probably a better idea to make things like wallpapers bigger, since a larger wallpaper can be applied with cropping or with "stretching" to a smaller size, and if you scale downwards, the result will be close to the maximum quality achievable on the given resolution while when you scale an image upwards the quality is linearly diminishing.
Nice wallpaper nonetheless
