Hello all,
I'm working in Italy for a month and a half (at the Gran Sasso Lab if anyone cares). A week and a half from now, I'm gonna get around a 2 week break before I have to come back to the lab and take another shift. I'm trying to spend around 4-5 days (the 5th or 6th of November until the 10th of November) traveling around and visiting places in Italy. My friend from Spain is also flying in to visit me (we're gonna travel together) so I wanna coordinate traveling with her.
So here are a couple of questions. Currently I'm in the Gran Sasso mountains (very very close to L'Aquila) and I know how to get to the main airport in Rome (Fiumicino) through public transportation. However my friend is flying into the Ciampino airport (since it's much cheaper that way). What would be the best way to meet up with her? What are the top places to see in Rome and how feasible are they to travel to if I don't have a car (I know Italian public transportation is pretty good)? I'm guessing we won't just stay in Rome the whole time, what other cities are "must visits"? I'm definitely gonna try to go to Pisa (since it's only a little north of Rome and I wanna see that damn tower!), do you guys think I have enough time to travel up even more north (like Milan or Florence or something)? If so, what are other cities that are good to travel to, what are the "must do" things there, and how do I travel there?
Keep in mind, I speak basically no Italian. All I do to survive is like point and say stuff in English (and hope people understand, lol). I'm trying to plan out a rough draft itinerary =)
Thanks for all the help, hopefully there are some Italians on TL =)
PS: After my friend leaves, I wanna try to hit up some arcades >_>. Are there any arcades in Rome that have Street Fighter (they probably don't have 4, but 3rd strike is good enough for me) or Tekken that have good competition? I've been a week and a half without an arcade and I'm dying for one >_>.

Reserve a spot at the Borghese Gallery for a day you'll be in Rome immediately: http://www.galleriaborghese.it/borghese/en/edefault.htm. The Bernini sculptures there are absolutely mindblowing; probably the best artwork I've seen in person.
They require reservations to get in and it is very popular, so hopefully you can get in to see it. It takes only an hour or two to see everything and it's right in Rome.

I'm from the northern part of Italy so i can't suggest anything to view about Rome, only don't even bother trying to visit anything else, because you'll find yourself packed with stuff to see and you'll find out that time really flies.
Also public transportation is pretty meh in every city outside of Milan, Rome has a subway/metroline but it's neither clean nor new, taking the train to go anywhere will feature hours you'll spend at the station or inside the train running late.
And regarding Arcades or any sort of public place to play VGs you should look for them in big shopping centers or bowling halls but don't expect any arcade to feature games from after 2002-4... Such places are usually full of what in the US are called Guidos and in italian are so popular they make about 60% of the whole population.
Also look for well-dressed people or students if you need indications, Rome is generally considered a safe city so the risk of getting mugged is pretty low but English is a language which is poorly taught in schools but isn't really spoken by anyone. Try not to think of Mario games when talking to natives or you'll end up laughing your ass off in their faces.

If its not too far you could visit Pompeii near Napoli.

Thanks for the comments! Ingenol, were there any other places that you visited that you would recommend?
