OK, here's the deal. I bought my desktop a few years back and now the ram is acting up. It's a single stick of DDR2 2GB ram, made by OCZ. Lately I was getting a shit ton of blue screens and after lots of antivirus/antispyware scans and even upgrading to a new OS, I finally narrowed it down to the ram. I ran memtest86+ overnight yesterday and ended up with 170 errors!

So the only solution now for me is to get new ram. I use Windows 7, should I get 2 GB ram or 2 sticks for a total of 4GB? I will probably be going with some more reliable brand i.e. Kingston. I do not overclock. Now I read somewhere that the FSB/Ram clock ratio should be 1:1 for best results. My CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 with a FSB of 1066 MHZ. Now with the way DDR2 works, the RAM speed only needs to be 533 MHZ for the FSB:Ram ratio to be 1:1, right? If that is the case, should each stick be 267 MHZ if I am going for 4gb?

for those of you who are tl;dr:

1. Should I get 2gb or 4gb ram? My OS is windows 7 ultimate
2. If my FSB is 1066 mhz, what speed should the ram be to attain a 1:1 ratio? 533 mhz? 1066?

edit: If you make a "download ram" joke, I will personally hunt you down T_T

looks like I can't edit this anymore, or maybe I need to wait an hour or something but I forgot to mention that I'm on 32-bit

Go for the 4GB. Don't worry about the RAM 1:1 stuff. It make so little difference to your overall performance. Go grab DDR2 800MHZ A-DATA (Good and cheap.)

1066MHZ RAMS are honestly a waste of money for non-OC. 1:1 has everything to do with your multipliers, you shouldn't worry about it.

Save the money and spend it towards a SSD.

32bit operating systems will not utilize the all of the 4GB but DDR2 is so cheap you should just grab 4GB.

Definately get 4 GB. 2 sticks with 2GB each!

This is wrong.
32-bit uses 3,2 RAM without graphics card included.

So you can choose between 2 and 3,2.
Get 3,2

Does 64-bit still have compatibility issues with applications and stuff? Back in the days of XP 64-bit was pretty much useless iirc

edit: also it looks like my processor can support 64-bit
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLAPC

it supports "Intel® EM64T", i believe that is 64-bit right?

So in theory I can just switch to a x64 os right off the bat? Or are there other hardware issues I need to know?

So can anyone share some insight on 32-bit vs 64-bit nowadays on Windows 7? Is it worth upgrading to 64-bit?

yep, basically everyone will have to move soon or later to 64 bit system, because of the RAM, 3.2G won't be enough for much longer (or maybe already isn't). Compability issues are almost non-existent as 64b system can "emulate" 32b perfectly. So it's like: with 64 system you can use both 32 and 64 applications and you are'nt limited by RAM size. You will get only benefits by upgrade.

The download ram joke didn't occur to me, but even worse is the fact that when I saw 'need help on buying new ram' my first thought was a travian ram:

I have a really old wireless card and a really old printer and I don't think there will be 64-bit drivers for either of them. Are you saying that even with my old 32-bit drivers, both will still function normally in a x64 environment?

no, i can't say that 100%. If they are really old then there may be some issues. But why worry? Just try it, you can reinstall back to 32 anytime you want in like 20 minutes.

4gb DDR2-800, $57.99

A 64bit OS is definitely a huge upgrade. I really recommend that you install 64 bit XP or make the leap to Vista/Windows 7.

Get 2 sticks of 2G for a total of 4. I would suggest getting Crucial, kingston, or Corsair which is way more expensive.
Why would you ever choose failure, when success is an option.

Anything good about the DDR2-800 when I can get DDR2-667 and they'll both run at the same speed? My FSB is 1066 MHZ

I'd try fiddling with the timings before tossing the current stick. The one time I bought OCZ RAM it didn't work at the advertised timings.

Check your motherboard manual for BIOS settings that affect RAM timings/clock speed.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself Windows 64 bit and pop in no less than 4gb. I recommend 6gb just because RAM is so cheap and with all the programs running in the background + whatever you're doing, you'll make use of 4+ GB.

DDR2 is further coming down in price because DDR3 is now mainstream. All you have to do is get Win7 64.

And even if you don't/won't/can't, Win7 32-bit can use 3gb. That 1 extra gb will make a world of difference, so still get a 4gb set.

I don't fully understand what you mean by timings, but I only started to get errors recently after several years of use, it worked perfectly in the beginning, so wouldn't that mean the ram stick can only be tossed now?

I haven't messed around with my BIOS settings or overclocked anything in all the times I used it.
