A guide to getting a Korean flag on iCCup
You know you want it!

Many of you have wondered if you can get that [image loading] Korean flag in front of your name on
[image loading]
iCCup
in some other way than:

a) asking some Korean to make you/hand you over an account
b) asking for flag change in the iCCup forum

Each of those two have some pros and cons (choose your destiny: a) don't know any Koreans or b) wait until you grow a beard - despite that you might be asian).

Is there an other, better method? Yes. Proxy.

You might have already thought about that, but you just didn't know how or didn't bother to do it. In any case, I'll inform you that's it can be done *easily and quickly* if you follow the steps listed here. (and you'll learn how to setup a proxy in the process, if you didn't know it already )

Now you can change your flag so you can just play anonymously among a gazillion other Koreans avoiding any chance of detection from other players or just to have fun by playing a joke on your friends!

1) Make a new e-mail address.

Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!... you choose.

Sadly, iCCup requires each account to have a different e-mail.

2) Find a proxy server list.

Google (click it!) something like "Korean proxy servers", "Korea proxy list" or similar to get a page with lists of proxy servers from Korea.

South Korea is officially "Korea, Republic of", but some refer to it by Korea (South). Use sorting by country if needed for easier searching.

+ Show Spoiler [List of proxies] +
I could have provided you with a list of proxies, but that's bound to change one day, so I thought it's better to "teach" you how to fish than feed you fish.

Anyway, just for reference, I used this page: http://www.xroxy.com/proxy-country-KR.htm

3) Choose an *Anonymous* proxy server.

Now that you have a list of proxies, choose one that is labeled as "Anonymous" (or "Socks4"/"Socks5"), because those generally don't forward any information about you to iCCup (or other pages) - like IP address or that it is in fact a proxy server you're connecting trough.

ReD is your friend, much like (T)NaDa.

+ Show Spoiler [Other properties] +
There's other properties like SSL (secure connection, encryption - if you're shopping though the proxy) or Latency & Speed (downloading etc.), but in this guide we're just concerned about routing trough South Korea, so that's of no relevance to us.

4) Setup your browser for proxy.

Copy the IP Address and Port numbers of that server and use them to setup the proxy settings (follow the red color):

Firefox 2
+ Show Spoiler +
Tools->Options->Advanced->Network->Connection->Settings

Enter the previously copied IP address in the "HTTP Proxy:" input box, and the port in the "Port:" input box.

Internet Explorer 7
+ Show Spoiler +
Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN settings->Proxy server

Enter the previously copied IP address in the "Address:" input box, and the port in the "Port:" input box.

+ Show Spoiler [Other options] +
In those pictures you can see the other options (like "use proxy for all protocols" and "avoid proxy for local IP addresses") you should use. Some of them are not necessary for iCCup, but generally it's good to use them for other purposes mentioned earlier.

5) Make a new iCCup account with your new e-mail, activate it and turn off the proxy settings.

Click to make a new account!

To turn off the proxy settings, follow the blue color in the last step and:

FF2 - turn on the radio button.
IE7 - uncheck the checkbox.

+ Show Spoiler [Extra!] +
If you want to get the maximum effect for intimidating your opponents:

  • Your name should be some random letters koreans use, like "hdhklr" or nonsensical names like "TamponZerg".

  • To look badass, transfer stats from your other account. >

  • Check this topic or just add this in your profile:

life of lively to live to life of full life thx to shield battery
or just some Korean phrase in Hangul.

    followed by:
    <your_iCCup_name_here>@hanmail.net
    cafe.daum.net/<your_iCCup_name_here>.

  • When asked "from?", reply "kor".
If asked more, if you name is something like "TamponZerg", respond in broken english.
If it's like "hdhklr" don't say anything else unless you know some Korean phrases in Hangul.

+ Show Spoiler +
yeah, I know it's a pretty (pun intended) random picture, and it doesn't belong here, but I like it

So what does proxy do in practice?

You send your request for data (creation of a new account, by clicking on the link) to the proxy server in South Korea, it anonymously sends the same request to the iCCup page server.

ICCup page server detects that the IP address is in fact from [image loading] South Korea. It sends data (about the iCCup page for creating an account) back to the proxy server, the proxy server sends the data to you. You get your account creation page with the South Korean flag.

Usually you send and receive data directly from the page server. But the proxy server is essentially a messenger (that hides your identity) between you and the host server for the page you're browsing (ie. iCCup or TeamLiquid). In our case, it's like you're wearing a mask when buying condoms from your local store.

+ Show Spoiler [Notes] +
Note 1. The account flag changes to your country after some while. I'll try to investigate and find a way around it.

Note 2. This guide is actually for setting your *browser* to use the proxy settings. This can be done for your whole internet connection (ie. other/all programs/games), but that is not our goal here.

Note 3. There are proxy pages that allow you to browse other pages trough them without setting all this up, but I didn't find one for South Korea, so I decided to present you a general way.

Note 4. Most public proxy servers (unlike some private/$$$ servers) are usually slow and have big latency, so I wouldn't recommend them for anything else than light surfing (no YouTube, or playing games).

Note 5. For more anonymity/security, you can clear the cookies and cache before using the proxy, and change the password once you turn it off.

Note 6. Technically, you don't really need to use an anonymous proxy server for iCCup, as I think that it doesn't check the the original IP address - not sure though. But it's a must have for most other purposes.

Note 7. Click on the big Korean flag to learn its meaning, and all the symbols on it. DO IT!

Have fun playing anonymously as a korean and scaring all the foreigners!

Having people leave/ban like 20% of the games you join isn't fun at all.

I've added a new paragraph explaining some reasons. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ah, didn't know that, thanks for the info, that's handy. It might be wise to keep that email if you forget the password later.

yeah, but messing with your friends is, like I pointed out in the paragraph that I added now. ;D

You're welcome.

I don't see much problem with this; why is this so different than having a smurf account with your country flag? It only increases your anonymity - in most cases you would create that account one way or the other.

Also, I don't think this'll result in some mass transfer to the Korean flag. It's just to help some people that want to do so.

I have an account that doesn't have a flag on it and only bears a black background and an x-mark!

It's possible due to my dynamic ip address! But I gotta say I really liked it

Anyway, this is a very good guide man! thanks!
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

This is classified as a One-hit wonder if I remember correctly?

Yeah, you can pretty much use this method to get any flag.

Lol, I'd love to know how can that be done. :D
Is there a 1x1 ladder list for no flag?

Thanks for the support!
