So i have an English assignment/essay that i have to do. And the task is simple, i have to write an essay about defending something that is under-appreciated. So my obvious choice was Starcraft, i can probably write a 5 page essay on how good starcraft is but, the problem is, why is it under-appreciated other than Graphics? Need help with some points thanks!

Be more specific: write why Queens are underappreciated in SC. Or Valkyries

Oh lord, I see a repeat of that one thread were the kid couldn't do a project because there were no credible sources for Starcraft. However, seeing how you are in Korea, a project on SC might not seem so out of the ordinary and to put it bluntly, stupid. If you were in the US however, that would probably be an epic fail topic.

It's underappreciated because a good portion of the online gaming community is distracted by WoW.

The learning curve is extremely high for the game. Nearly every unit requires a lot of management. It takes a while to get the mechanics down and the multi-tasking required is extremely high as well.

But seriously: you may use argument that many people think SC is simply a 'click-fest', and they think agility/velocity is more important than strategical insight... Which is not true.

Oh im in Canada lol, however, i did ask the teacher if a specific game was a valid topic, and he did say that i can write about anything, as long as i could write it like i really care.

Write about ESPORTS! (I passed my class writing my paper on that haha)

I never was under the impression that Starcraft is under appreciated at all. Most of the Western gaming community highly respects the game because of the great influence it had on RTS design.

There are probably some people who don't respect it because it's old, has dated graphics, and a difficult hotkey system so I guess you can make a case that people shouldn't judge something without understanding it. You could write how these inherent weaknesses are actually what makes starcraft so great.

As long as you go into details about the competitive community, the complex gameplay, and the influence it's had on the RTS genre, you can write a strong essay. Just make sure you give context and terminology so that your teacher can understand what you are talking about.

StarCraft is rarely under-appreciated. Maybe in spoiled European countries, but if any1 knows jack about ESPORTS they know that SC should be worshipped.

I would think writing about SC being underappreciated in S. Korea (!) would be a huge failure that comes crashing down. But I don't live there - so I can't know.
Complete the cycle!

it's inconceivable to me that a person from (South) Korea can't write a 5 page paper defending starcraft

StarCraft isn't under-appreciated. It may only be hated by hardcore fans of other RTS with multiplayer options (it's hard to say "other popular competetive RTS" since other RTS games aren't that popular in competetive sense except for WarCraft3). I've been playing Supreme Commander for quite a some time - it really is fun game, though in multi it's "mass one unit type while slowly making your eco stronger" type of game and it gets boring pretty fast, and all i can say is that people there really hate SC and use arguments like "fools play it because its big name, but you cant zoom map out and have no automated production, and it is about clicking faster instead of thinking" (it really is funny if you ever played this game - since it's all about spamming, clicking everywhere and flooding enemy with units, literally no place for any varied strategies, plus you have like 1 and only BO for all races which is the best and noone tries to play anything other way)

I think starcraft is under appreciated but only by newer gamers. They don't understand that Gears of War 2 and L4D aren't competitive games. I have no idea how games like that are thought of as competitive. If you take a game like starcraft, you'll see that there are so many different options, and just playing "standard" takes 100%+ more skill than any other game I have ever come across.
Whatever happens, happens.

Many RTS gamers I know don't like starcraft because they think "zergling rush" is overpowered...

edit: There are a lot of stereotypes of Starcraft in the gaming world, before many of my gaming friends met me they thought Starcraft was all about 4pooling and was an Asian game and that all the progamers were 40 year old virgins or something.

Starcraft is mainly underappreciated by complete noobs who know almost nothing about it... but this barely constitutes a good topic for writing. I'm glad you feel passionately about this but I agree you are better off choosing something else. This can't be the only thing you can use for your class.

I would never ever write about starcraft in an academic environment. The amount of legit english sources are low, the pre-knowledge level of a professor and peers who may read the work is literally 0% most likely they have never even HEARD about the topic which makes it very uninteresting in my opinion.

Just my thoughts though, I see people post blogs all the time about how they want to write about starcraft or progaming etc and I rarely see and hear good results. It's just too much work. Sure you know alot about the subject personally but it's a dead end sort of path to write/do academic research on.

It was a GE class. You probably had a shitty adjunct who felt bad and gave you a passing grade.

Seriously, this will give you at least 6 pages of pure argument. If I was you, I'd definitively go for it.

Well as you said the graphics, and also the fact that it is a 10 year old, supposedly out-dated game. Also, RTS imo, has never really been a "cool" genre in the way FPS is and it is seen as a nerdier game.
