Incels who are typically defined by their dreadful ideology rather than their repulsiveness, btw, but hey, that's another question. When xDaunt says that people are retarded, he is not saying that the people who he is talking to are actually mentally challenged, he is saying that what they think is so stupid that it's as if they are mentally challenged. It's obviously an insult, and it's obviously offensive. When incels are mentioned in the thread, we mean incels. I can see how it could be used as an insult obviously, but that's not what happened here, and that's not what generally happens. Also... what is the strawman?

If someone expouses incel terminology and ideology and such a persons is described as incel, would that be a description or an insult? And the same for racist. Is making a strawman argument actionable?

Is making a strawman argument actionable? If done so in a blatantly obvious manner in the USPol thread, then yes. Did you read the thread rules?

The second example is a description is not and should not. The third example doesn't appear to be explicitly mentioned. Anyways, who has time to read the thread rules. Plenty of time to post and write that I have no time to read though!

I haven't been following the thread closely enough to necessarily pick up every bit of subtext, but are you claiming one of the following statements is false? - xDaunt intended to describe specific other people (including some posting in the thread) as "wilfully retarded" - The people who used the word "incel" were not using the word to describe anybody who would not describe themselves as an "incel"

But like racism, there needs to be grounds to call someone out on it. Throwing it around willy nilly isn't any better than calling someone retarded (I haven't read the post in question, so this is not me giving an indication as to what should be done with that spesific case)

I am under the impression that this is an inaccurate characterisation of the common usage of the word "incel". I'm not particularly inclined to dig any deeper than the Wikipedia page, but from that: + Show Spoiler + The /r/incels subreddit, a forum on the website Reddit, became a particularly active incel community. At least four mass murders, resulting in 45 deaths, have been committed in North America by men who have either self-identified as incels or who had mentioned incel-related names and writings in their private writings or Internet postings. I don't know if there's ever been a /r/racists subreddit but surely if there was it must have been satire? /r/incels was explicitly not satire. If anybody has better knowledge feel free to clarify this point. On March 01 2019 19:48 Excludos wrote: But like racism, there needs to be grounds to call someone out on it. Incel is their own label for themselves. They’re a weird bunch. It’s not an external slur for the group, it’s just the name, the negative connotation of the word is because of what they choose to be.

And if you don't identify as one and you get called it it would most certainly be an insult. However, I don't think there is a "PC" term that would accurately describe the group. So I'm not sure how you would refer to them in a way that would make everyone here happy. you wouldn’t. calling another person an incel is definitely an insult. there’s no pc way to insult people. like you said, though a word borne by self identification, it can be and is frequently also used to insult people. really very similar to the word retard, granted in very different real life contexts. i guess retard hadn’t been created through self identification, but what i mean instead is a word not originally intended as an insult but still used as one.

Excludos correctly noted that almost no one self identifies as an incel. Using the word is like calling someone a sjw. There's a tiny group of people in the internet who self identify as sjws and even tinier group that self identify as incels. Outside of those tiny groups the terms are used almost exclusively as insults and/or to make a straw man argument. I don't think NewSunshine's post should be actioned, but I also wouldn't do anything about xDaunt's post because I'm fine with seeing insults like that if they're not overused. I was mainly curious if using the term "incel" breaks the thread's rules. If I understand these rules correctly, I think it does. Another reason why I wouldn't warn NewSunshine is that his post can't be read as he's insulting someone in the thread. My question was more abstract. I just want to know if I understand the term "incel" the same way most people do.
