I think it would be a good idea to have a rating system for people's posts (a la Slashdot, digg, etc.) People would definently enjoy rating posts as flame bait, funny, informative, etc.

It would probably help with new users registering so they can rate (although some might say we have too many new users ;-) ) and it would be a good way to tell if someone is a quality poster.
And this hot potato has vanished into thin air.

Well IMO, this rating system is good if you have many, many posts / day . I don't want to disrespect TL.net but we almost know everyone here and their personality and it is not that hard to select the post you want to take a look at.
For new users, it is right that they don't know each people here but it is "their" job to get used to this beautiful world that tl is

slashdot and digg have systems like this set in place because each thread is a discussion about a particular news story, and it's easy to be misled or misinformed by an errant post if you're unfamiliar with the topic. that is why moderators are supposed to make the good, on topic, correct posts easier to see.

here on tl.net, threads exist about a wide variety of inane, and useless bullshit, and were the staff to implement such a moderation system, well, i for one would probably use 4/5 points modding idiots/trolls to oblivion, and the odd 1 point for a good, informative post. threads would shrink pretty quick.
[EDIT]Here i was speaking strictly about the general forum. the more i think about it though, the more i really believe that strategy / brood war / tournament could really benefit from this

but maybe that'd be a good thing

Would just be a popularity contest. The top 10 or so posters would have high ratings, the hated posters would get 0-1 and no one else would get anything.

I only like this idea for the strategy section. Everywhere else I dont think it is necessary, people know when they see a good post.

I like the idea of a post rating system similar to Slashdot. Post that are rated as troll, I can just skip and save myself time and possibly anger.

EDIT: Whoever change my icon to a Lurker permanently .. THANKS!

Implement it for strategy section only.It could be great improvment and it will surely prevent every inocent soul from taking Reasons posts seriously.

And maybe for General forum too.Mods can mark thread as a expert topic and moderation will begin. So posters like WhatIsProtoss (aka i'm expert in every field) can be safely ignored.

WhatIsProtoss seems like, for certain things, he knows what he's talking about. You just have to get over his attitude and his arrogance to see it.

Yes for certain things.

But there are topics wehere he CLEARLY don't know what he is talking about.

Example:

Java is really good for software. And for jobs within mathematics and computer science, knowing Java and C++ is the best way to go.

A degree in math/physics/CS and proficiency in C++ is what big corporations want desperately right now.

There is a lot bigger demand for java and C# programmers than C++.

Um, what are you talking about? C# is merely a "replacement" for Java. All programmers should know C++ and Java. C# is just a rewritten language based on Java.

Don't spew random shit when you don't know what you're talking about. C++ is very important.

The fact that YOU SAID people wanted Java/C# more than C++ tells me that you don't know that much. Companies want proficiency in C++ and Java.

This example involves me just because it's easier to search for such a specific stuff.
This clearly shows that he don't have fucking clue.He is not even close. He si living in 1998.
There are more examples but i somewhat can't find them using search function .

i agree that it might be a good idea for the strategy section, so that people would know the quality posts.

for the other sections, sure, it would be a popularity contest (i.e. sundance would always rate WhatIsProtoss' posts down just because they had a gay little fight before). but what's wrong with that? don't the disliked/annoying/stupid posters get banned in the end anyways?
And this hot potato has vanished into thin air.

i actually wouldn't like it if negatively modded posts didn't show up by default (except maybe in the strategy section). arguments are sometimes fun to read.

This would only benefit TL.net if instead of individual posts being rated, an entire thread was rated. This way, looking through the forum, you wanted to look at a topic, it would be rated and you can pick and choose cool topics to spend your time browsing.

I guess it would also work for the strategy section.

perhaps we should record some nightstories for the people too, you know how hard it can be to fall asleep sometimes. Oh and let's not forget to install a microwave in the tl.net server so people can heat their food.

i think maybe a user rating system, but post rating is a nono, there are too many posts here, just think of the live game reports, that would ruin everyone's average post rating or whatever

lol shark is staff now? first octopuss and now shark, wtf is going on with the giving of staff to bm kids.

imo for people who aren't exactly pristine staff material, they should get like a faded blue text name or something, but no tl.net logo. based on these guys posting history making them representatives of tl.net is a mistake...

a-game i dont know why you think it is any of your business who gets to be staff. Are you part of the discussion and decision making here? I thought not. You have no idea what he has been asked to do or why he was invited.

If this was post rating, you would be down by 10.

Lawl. I try not to flame people and be known more as a gm than bm. I flamed one or two people I think, most recently towards the general people who were bugging Pat about PGTour, but normally I don't flame people.

Get a room please. Vomit @ you two.

I say while we're at it, make everything rate-able. Threads, Posts, Posters, Polls, Games, etc.
And yeah, rating stuff is utter nonsense. Only in the strategy forum would it be totally useless like no one else has pointed out. And why do we even need to rate posts and threads? Are we that desperate for that one golden post etc? Oh nO~ OH nO~~ I mised a joke...fuqqqqq
