Recently one of the biggest radio stations in Australia (Triple J) held a vote for your top 10 songs of all time, in order to make a "Hottest 100 of all-time" (they do a hottest 100 each year for Australia day). It's one of the bigger radio stations here while still being non-commercial. Voting is closed now, and they're playing a few songs from the top 100 each day, and this weekend they'll play the entire thing I think? or at least 50 to 1.
The list so far is here. This is just what's been played/revealed so far.
It was insanely hard to pick a top 10, but this is what I ended up voting (with only seconds to spare before it closed):
Rolling Stones, The - Sympathy For The Devil Beatles, The - Come Together Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower Velvet Underground, The - Heroin Elliott Smith - Miss Misery Led Zeppelin - Kashmir Pixies - Where Is My Mind? Clash, The - London Calling Radiohead - Paranoid Android Rolling Stones, The - Gimme Shelter
You also have to pick a number 1 song, so I picked 'Pixies - Where Is My Mind?' for that, though really any of those songs could've been it. <_<
So anyway, I was interested to see what TL's top 10 songs of all time would be. I had a quick search and couldn't find a thread like this, just a lot of "top xxx songs" kind of threads, so I hope it's cool.
Go!

That's such a good list, I was going to do it but I would have agonized over it for so long that in the end I just thought it wasn't worth the hassle.

my god it would take forever to make a top 10 list -- and a few days later you would want to change that list.

Really like stafu's list. But I would fit a Pink Floyd somewhere in there ^^

In lieu of a top 10, I'll submit my #1.

Yeah man, I know what you mean. It was so hard. I just decided to get it done and just kind of roll a dice in my head between some songs, as I only had about 10 minutes to do it in. There was so much that I had to miss out on though, like a Bob Marley song, a Bob Dylan (though I convinced myself All Along the Watchtower would kind of count ), a Cream song and a bunch of other stuff No Woman No Cry has already been played which is cool, could've been higher though!

This is hard. And slightly vague. Do you mean your favorite songs based on their content? Or the ones you think were the most memorable/important? Or just your current favorites? Or the ones that were your favorites the longest, perhaps?
Anyway, the CURRENT best list I can come up with: (no particular order)
ACDC - Thunderstruck Quiet Riot - Mental Health Metallica - Fade to Black Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive HammerFall - Heeding the Call Journey - Don't Stop Believing Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills Manowar - Hail And Kill Sonata Arctica - San Sebastian Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train
|
Quiet Riot is "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)"
|
Here are my favorites at this moment:
Andrew Bird - Not a Robot, But a Ghost Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes David Bowie - Space Oddity David Bowie - Moonage Daydream The Doors - When The Music's Over James Brown - Cold Sweat Kings of Leon - King of the Rodeo Of Montreal - Rapture Rapes the Muses Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto #2 in c minor The White Stripes - Black Math
edit: Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)

I guess it's a mix of this. Content/impact/the way it affects you/songs you would never be sick of. All of this together is pretty much how I answered. Songs you've loved the most, and always will.

#1: Everybody Lies - Leo Kottke
Kottkes honest vocals, and a haunting accompaniment from the 12 string guitar makes this song really special to me.
#2: Title and Registration - Death Cab for Cutie
Gibbard's lyrics are just amazing. Everytime i listen to the song I'm in awe of the lyrics. really, listen to the song.
#3: No Children - The Mountain Goats
The lyrics and the unconventional melody really make this special.
#4: Oh, Susquehanna! - Defiance, Ohio
...With every trace of life, it seems, confined within a frame, the faces move from day to day but the strips all look the same. And the punch lines are resoundingly unfunny for those trapped in this architecture of easy money...
#5: Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
The most emotionally moving electric guitar solo i've ever heard. Pure brilliance, and waters lyrics are sensational too.
#6: In Christ there is no East or West - John Fahey
Oh my god
#7: Easter and the Saragasso Sea - Leo Kottke
Guitar composition at its finest
#8: Wish you were Here - Pink Floyd
Such a touching message
#9: Room 8 - Leo Kottke
Techincal Brilliance
#10: Driving of the Year Nail - Leo Kottke Techincal brilliance on a 12 string once again, such creative composition. Every time i listen to the song I'm left smiling in disbelief.

I cannot name 10, but i can name my absolute favorite song of all time.
Stairway to heaven - Led Zepplin
this song is a masterpiece, it evokes a sense of serenity in me that cannot be had any other way. Keep in mind that this is coming from a guy whose other top 99 songs would all be hip hop
