Details of problem: Hello, I have just built a new computer and am experiencing some issues/crashing. At first, I was only experiencing crashes when I attempted to play sc2. Within 2-3 minutes of trying to play a game it would freeze and there would be some green lines, or some squares on the screen, also the monitor would disconnect/reconnect. At first I could close out sc2 and return to desktop, after a few crashes it would then require a hard reset.
Now I am experiencing crashes when I am not in sc2, just have chrome open and am browsing the web. After 10-15 minutes the computer will freeze with some blues squares/rectangles on the screen. Also usually the monitor will turn off or say it has no connection, then turn on again.
I am currently using the computer on safe-mode without any crashes.
Solutions and measures conducted: I have updated catalyst and updated the motherboard to the latest drivers. I did not remove any of the initial graphics card drivers before I updated. I'm not exactly sure if I have the latest BIOS for my graphics card. I know that the asus BIOS update is not compatible with my mobo.
The motherboard BIOS is up to date.
I have checked the gpu/cpu temperatures when idle, and they were not high (not sure of exact numbers)
I have reseated the ram and the graphics card, made sure the pci power was connected. the ram is currently in the first and third slot.
update: I have ran memtest with 3 passes and no errors. here is what was shown after crashing in the Heaven benchmark test. + Show Spoiler + Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033
Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 116 BCP1: FFFFFA800948F4E0 BCP2: FFFFF88002CA5E5C BCP3: 0000000000000000 BCP4: 0000000000000002 OS Version: 6_1_7601 Service Pack: 1_0 Product: 768_1 Files that help describe the problem: C:\Windows\Minidump\010514-3525-01.dmp C:\Users\MICK\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-5413-0.sysdata.xml
I have also uninstalled (through atisetup.exe -uninstall) my ati driver, and reinstalled from the amd setup. Still crashing.
Now I have replaced the card with a different one and it did not crash when I was running the Heaven benchmark test program.

Try to run a memory test. There's one built into Windows. Open the Control Panel and type "memory problem" into the search box at the top right and click on the single search result you get. It requires restarting the PC. I don't remember how long it takes to complete.

I ran memtest, is this something different?

I overlooked that you mentioned running a memory test, sorry. The Windows stuff is not any different, probably less thorough.
I'd try a different version of graphics drivers. Graphics card drivers are one of the software things that can freeze a PC completely, so it could be that it's not a hardware problem really. The BSOD you mentioned also has the number that's about graphics drivers (that 0x116 BSOD means that Windows tried to restart the graphics driver and it wouldn't do it).
If nothing helps, I would run the memory test for a lot more passes, for hours, just to be sure everything about that works fine. The test is also a sign that the CPU and board do basic tasks correctly. Afterwards, I'd say it might be the graphics card being defective and you should contact the shop and get it replaced as long as it's still new. You can try running your PC with the integrated graphics from Intel to see if it does not crash when using that.

Yes I have been using a different graphics card and there are no crashes. I think it's either a completely defective card, or it will only work with lower clock settings (comes overclocked). I'm going to test lower clock settings again, but the question I have is, even if it works when I lower it, should I still return it and try to get one that will work overclocked? Or am I going to encounter the same problems?

I would contact the shop and give it back as soon as possible. I guess you got one that's broken in a way that was missed when they tested it at after manufacturing.

Ok I will get this one replaced, thanks.

Oh, you edited

Good thing though, I'm now actually considering a different one. Seems like I might have to pay a bit extra for the 7770. Is there any preference for the brand of graphics cards? I might avoid ASUS after this problem, and having read a lot of other complaints about the card. Any specific model you prefer from Amazon? (of the two you just listed, or the 7770)
