SK Telecom T1 Chae ‘Piglet’ Gwang-Jin Interview
“Last OGN Season Finals Motivated Me”

“MVP Ozone,” We are not yet a “Rival” to them, but I don’t think we will lose to them!

It is extremely difficult to see noticeable improvements every season in the world of pro-gamers whose skills are already top-notch. The player being interviewed today played “well” last season, but surprisingly even “better” this season.

This player is SKT T1’s AD Carry, Chae ‘Piglet’ Gwang-Jin. Piglet, after the end of Round of 16 in Champions Summer 2013, has a KDA of 9.9 (56 Kills, 9 Deaths, 33 Assists). 9 deaths. He has only died 9 times out of 6 sets of games.

There may be those who say “The reason the AD Carry does not die is because he plays passively by hiding behind his teammates”. Piglet’s record of 56 kills ranks 2nd out of every laner in the teams that are currently in the quarterfinals. This record shows that PIglet is a player who is far away from being associated with the word “passive”.

People say that decision-making is the most important for the AD Carry. From the start to the end of the game, the AD Carries must make the best decisions in the numerous situations they face such as “Who should I attack in teamfights?”, “Is it safe to farm these minions?”, “How should I position myself in teamfights?”.

For Piglet, he plays remembering his practice games. After every game, he loads up the replay and watches the times he’s died to the enemy over and over again. Then, he talks with his coaches and his teammates to discuss about what the best decision should have been in those situations and minimizes his mistakes.

The reason that Piglet has shown such amazing plays this season probably comes from the knowledge he gathered through his practice method. The following is an interview with the “Awakened” SK Telecom T1’s AD Carry, Chae ‘Piglet’ Gwang-Jin.

Hello, I would like to congratulate you on your 3-0 sweep to qualify for the quarterfinals. How do you feel?

I feel really happy that it was a sweep. Our coach told us to try for a 3-0 sweep this time in the quarterfinals so we will put in a lot of effort to make it happen.

A sweep? That is an impressive goal. Your team currently has a 6 win streak. What is the reason for your success?
I think it is because my skill has improved. I think I played somewhat terribly last season (laughs), but this season I improved a lot so my share of contributing to the team has changed as well. It is not just my skill that has improved, everyone on our team has become better.

Let’s talk about the round of 16. In your MVP interview after already having 2 victories, you told us that you will show something interesting in the next game. But in your 3rd match vs. MVP Blue, we did not see anything special.

That was because there was a chance of a tie-game match. If we lost using “interesting” strategies, it would have affected other teams. Our potential loss could have put Najin-Shield and LG-IM 2 in unfavorable positions, so we just decided to play like we usually do and try our best.

Lee “CNyang” Gwan-Hyung (T/N: Was previously a Jungler for MVP Blue) played support in your game vs. MVP Blue. Were you surprised a little?

I did not know what was going on until the game started (laughs). I was surprised that he switched to support even though he plays exceptionally in the jungle. But it was easy for us to deal with the switch because he still lacks experience as a support.

Many community discussions put you as one of the best AD Carries. Do you agree with them?

I think I have a long way to go. I usually check Inven to find any mistakes that were pointed out that I could fix and there are a lot of harsh words still regarding my plays (laughs).

After your team placed 3rd last season, you lost to MVP Ozone in the following AMD-Inven Championship. Your team’s play has improved since then. Did your loss in the AMD-inven Championship affect the team?

The AMD Championship did affect us. We learned a lot after our loss to MVP Ozone. But we became motivated to improve since last season’s final. The team went to the stadium to watch the final and the stage for the final left quite an impression on me. I thought to myself, “I really want to play on that stage”.

Since last season, you have shown us many Caitlyn and Vayne plays, but have not used Ezreal as much. Any reason for that?

I did not use it until now, but I have plans to use Ezreal in the future. My most played champion is Ezreal (laughs). You can consider Ezreal as the champion that I can play the best with. Usually when I pick my champion I ask for my teammates’ opinions and Ezreal didn’t seem to be suggested that much.
I should pick the champions that my teammates wants like Caitlyn (laughs). The team favors taking towers down really fast.

Your stats are really good. Your kill record is 2nd and your KDA is also in the top 10. Did you know this?

Our team coaches tell me after watching the games. After they watch the game replays, they always give me their suggestions on how I should play in certain situations. If I use their suggestions and I make better plays in those situations, then I continue to do so. But, if it results in worse plays, then we share our opinions once again.

I always watch my in-game replays when my teammates are asleep or when I have free time. If I watch a game that I farmed really well but do not put in the damage in teamfights, I think to myself, “I could have put in more damage if I positioned like this”. I also watch my laning phase in replays to see where I could have positioned myself to avoid harass in lane. You cannot win the game if the AD Carry is pushed around in the laning phase because that means the enemy AD Carry’s growth and presence will be bigger. You must think about these even when you play solo queue.

I don’t think about my stats or about other teams’ AD Carry players. I focus on my team and my practice.

Your partner-in-lane Lee “PoohMandu” Jung-Hyun’s playing style changed a lot this season. What do you think about the change?

PoohMandu Hyung supports well with Fiddlestick or Mordekaiser, but he also plays well with normal support champions. He just did not like using them.

Our coaches told me to play to PoohMandu’s strength and PoohMandu also tried hard to play to my strength. But, we noticed that it was faster to improve by playing to my strength. He doesn’t even play Blitzcrank anymore even when we tell him to (laughs). I say things without thinking to PoohMandu Hyung, but he lets it go because he is such a kind guy. I do feel really sorry though (laughs).

Unlike last season, this season changed to the round of 16 system and also changed scheduling for the games. Did change happen for you as well from last season?

I think I like round of 12 better because I get to play more games. I like to play games fast. I think the waiting time between each set of games is a bit too long this season.

Do you have a team or a player that you think you should watch out for in the quarterfinals?
I think the skill level between players are about the same in the round of 8. The AD Carries also have similar skill levels. But, I don’t think I will lose to them anymore.

Did anything change for your teammates since last season?

For Jung “Impact” Un-Young, he is improving his champion pool and his laning phase. The game becomes really hard if the Top laner secures a solo kill and uses that advantage to target the enemy AD Carry lategame. He is such a great player that we let him do what he feels is the best.

For Bae “Bengi” Sung-Woong, he simply plays really well. Everytime I watch him play I can feel how good he is, but I think it doesn’t show that well in official matches. In scrims, our teammates all say “Wow, you are so good!”, but I would like it if he showed it in official games too. Also, his nickname is “Bear”. He gained so much weight that we told him to exercise. He said he will exercise, but he doesn’t. You won’t know if he gained weight just by looking, but if you touch, you will know (laughs).

For Lee “Faker” Sang-Hyuk, he plays well too. He has shown many games in which he carries by himself. But, his tendency to assert his opinion and be stubborn is on the strong side.

For PoohMandu, I feel sorry that I have said many careless words to him. I always feel grateful to him and I hope we put in a lot of efforts and improve together so that we do not lose to Najin Sword’s bot lane duo, Kim “Pray” Jong-In and Jang “Cain” Noo-Ri.

What teams do you predict will have great results this season?

That will be MVP Ozone and CJ Entus Blaze. Those teams play so well that I think they will have solid results this season. But I don’t think we will lose to them even if we play against them.

What is your team’s goal this season?

Our goal is to win the championship. Even if we don’t win, we would like to at least be in the finals.

Any words for the users of Inven?

I said in the MVP interview that we don’t have fans, but we actually do have fans (laughs). I hope our fans don’t feel sad after seeing that interview. I always feel grateful towards our fans. Also, our coaches are having a tough time these days and I hope they recover their strength.

Lastly, my mother’s ears are not in a good condition and I hope she has her surgery soon. Don’t think about the money and go to the hospital as soon as you can before your health is affected. Also, my father has a lot of white hair, but I cannot pull it for him because I don’t live at home. I usually pulled his white hair for him. But, during the time I was absent from home, his head turned white. I will pull all of his white hair on the day of my rest. Or I hope he dyes his hair. I love you.

Thank you. Pleasant surprise when I found you did an interview translation instead of news. It's not the best of interviews, but beggars can't be choosers. So thank you.

What do you mean by "not the best of interviews?" I assure you it is at least 95% correct in terms of correct translation. With the 5% incorrect being the sentence I took out because Piglet said it way too many times.

Any suggestions on how I can improve would be greatly appreciated though.

Pretty sure he is talking about the original content and not your translation .

That last part about white hair is a bit awkward...
