I've always wondered... what role exactly do WE play when we play Starcraft? Some invisible, disembodied commander? Something like the adjutant? Something more? I've been thinking and it's made me curious.
The units never talk to you during scripted sequences, and they never even look at you, but when you issue them commands then they speak directly to you. The classic Warcraft 2 peasant says "yes, me lord," when you order him around. If you click the unit enough to trigger their bonus dialogue it's usually aimed directly to you, as if the unit has become annoyed at you personally for "poking" them too much.
The adjutant refers to you as commander quite often when you play as Terran, but the other races aren't quite so personable. The Zerg voice usually uses the general "we" when referring to you ("our hive cluster is under attack"), while the Protoss voice certainly uses second person ("you must construct additional pylons").
I'm curious if anybody has any thoughts about our role in this world.

It's all a dream and we're really Keanu Reeves in The Matrix

You are the god of the race you are playing. They need to listen to your every command, no matter how stupid it is. And if you fail, they fail.
|
Why make it complicated? You are the commander/leader of that said race. Keep it simple man.
|
In SC1 you are the Commander/Cerebrate/Executor respectively for T/Z/P. So yeah you're like a guy that supervises the battle or something. I never gave it much thought, never seemed that interesting to me x_x

You can be whoever you want to be. Dont let anybody talk you down.
edit: in the compaign you play as Kerrigan and Raynor.
|
in bw story mode you were another character that commanded the army, as the characters would speak to you on what needs to be done, calling you judicator, overmind, etc. iirc

Nestea. We're all just Nestea.
The weird thing is, Nestea is Nestea in real life. And we just pretend to be him in this video game.

I think someone compiled the stories of SC1 and BW commanders and what supposedly happened to them pre-retcon, now it's pretty much from perspective of Jim/Kerrigan/Zeratul(?) in SC2. It's one of the things I miss tbh, they used to include you separately in their conversations and reason with you when you had to pick sides.

I SC:BW campaign you were encorporated into different ranks of command. With terran you were simply "commander", protoss greeted you as "executor" and as Zerg I believe you were one of thos wormy things that could only be destroyed by DTs? Anyway expanding that concept to multiplayer I guess you're in the role of a mid-high class military rank and every single race has it's own way to explain why units are at your command no matter wha: Terran has a strict command structure, for protoss its more or less the same except they also are driven by religious zeal and the belief that their (religious) leaders always lead them correctly. For Zerg...well...you basically mindcontrol them..

Well Terrans are still the same, simple Commander. Protoss is still the Executor who controls the whole base and all its robots. Just Zerg changed a bit. Now you aren't a thinking tumor on the planet anymore but actually a swarm queen.
