Hello Teamliquid, I have made this thread for those interested in joining a TeamLiquid Touhou competition. I realize there is already a Touhou thread, but the main thing that is discussed there is music, and a competition thread like this should probably stay separate from that thread.
Introduction to Touhou
+ Show Spoiler +For those of you that don’t know, Touhou is a series of games where you control a character that flies on the screen and shoots enemies while dodging bullets. People regularly call it a bullet-hell game because of the amount of projectiles that you must dodge. To compensate for the insane amount of bullets on screen, your character has a small hitbox. You earn points by collecting blue score point items as close to the top of the screen as you can (the higher you collect, the more points), staying alive, and defeating bosses without using bombs or losing a life. Bombs grant you temporary invincibility and differ between the different characters you choose. Each game is a little different from the others but most of them follow this general format (at least the ones we’ll be playing in this competition). Controls are Shift (focus attack and slow down), Z (shoot), X (bomb), and Ctrl (skip dialogue). This is what Touhou looks like: + Show Spoiler +
How this will work
The competition starts with the creation of this thread. This will be a competition seeing who can get the highest score for a particular Touhou game and difficulty. Scores have to be gained after the competition is started.
If you would like to join the competition, just submit a replay of any game and difficulty by emailing me it as an attachment (Epishade@gmail.com). I will add your replay and score to the leaderboards as soon as I can.
Rules/Regulations
1. Name your replay after your TeamLiquid profile. If it doesn’t fit, abbreviate it so I can at least tell who it is. If you abbreviate, please tell me your full profile name as well in the email.
2. If you submit a replay, and it is an old replay, not done during the time of the competition, or is not named after your TeamLiquid profile, I will not add it.
3. You can submit more replays if you play through the game again and receive a higher score.
Support for those who have questions/trouble
+ Show Spoiler +For trouble getting the games to work, I have 2 suggestions. Download DirectX to your computer. It’s basically software used for people who make Windows games that will allow you to run Touhou. My other suggestion is to change your system locale to Japanese. To do this, go to Control Panel - Clock, Language, Region - Regional and Language Options - Administrative - Change system locale... Japanese. This is for Vista and it might be slightly different on other Operating Systems. If you still can’t get the games to work, post below and maybe someone can help you.
For those wanting to join, but don’t have the games, send me a pm.
How to watch replays: Click on the cell containing the replay and highlight the cell description "URL" near the top. Copy with ctrl + c. Paste in browser URL. Download replay. Find replay in Winrar and move that replay file to the replay folder of the respective Touhou game.
I also recommend, before playing the game, to check out the Touhou wiki and look up how the specific game works, and what strategies or characters you might want to use for that game.
Feel free to discuss your replays, someone else’s replays, suggestions, observations or w/e in this thread. If I get a larger turnout than I expect, I may appoint someone to help. Likewise, if nobody joins, I’ll probably can this project or transfer ownership.

Definitely joining! Atm, I'm trying to 1cc hard mode and clearing an extra stage. Except I can't get replays to work. I tried saving a replay in game, but the file never appears in the replay folder in the rar. I get error messages saying the volume cannot be modified or whatever, does that have something to do with it?
edit: nvm got replays to work, turns out I was too dumb to extract the files from the rar into a folder...

I'm not quite sure how to fix this problem. I've never gotten replay saving errors or volume errors. All I could recommend is to redownload the games to see if that works.

Extra stages require you to beat the game on normal with no continues? I think. Since some people are not able to do this, I left them out.
Also updated the leaderboard with your score.

Hey this is a cool idea, I might have to try playing again.
There's no order on your spreadsheet though, should be ranked from highest to lowest, meaning you would probably have to redo the format that it looks like you have atm

Haha, I have trouble making it too. I often have to redo a lot of my playthroughs because I die like 2-3 times in a row to something stupid. But again, doesn't matter if you're good or not. A lot of people are saying that they are not good so they don't want to join, but being bad at this game is probably normal for most people.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. I ranked it from lowest to highest (ie. Touhou 6 first, Touhou 13 last). I did it this way based on the order of the series (usually you start with the beginning and go up), and also because I believe 6 is a little easier than the other games and would be good to start with. Are you saying you want it to be ranked Touhou 13 first and then Touhou 6 last, or did I misunderstand?

I gave another attempt tonight (gotta beat Triflux ), got about 83~ million. Once I'm done with midterms tomorrow evening I'm gonna give it some more serious attempts, lots of room to improve

I mean the players' scores
Epishade, Imbajoe, Vestrel, and Triflux's scores aren't in the order of highest points. It should be sortable, no? Maybe you should have a separate sheet for each game so you can sort more easily. 1st 2nd 3rd etc... you have that currently but this way it would make it easier to see 4th and on.

This is tougher than I remember.. I even died on Rumia. > Touhou 6 is my least played touhou..
I've managed to beat all the games on easy before, but only ever cleared mountain of faith and imperishable night on normal, and MoF was 1 time after a couple weeks of practice. I'm nowhere near lunatic playing level :D

I can't record replays in EoSD for some reason. It's the only one though, I know i can in the others.
