Another thread on this forum sparked an interesting discussion about the differences between man and women. The question is: Are man inherently better then women at sc/videogames.
For physical sports the answer seems obvious, man have an advantage due to the fact that they are stronger physically but can there be more reasons? Its not only the male body thats different from the female body, its also the male mind that is wired differently.
If we look for example at darts or pool or snooker, then you see that the top is still dominated by males while the impact of the physical body is verry limited (non of the man playing darts can be called "fit") Still man are "better" the facts cant be denied. With sports wich are only played in the mind there also is a difference between man and women. Man tend to win again, examples can be seen in the chess and bridge world and also poker.
The reasons why man are winning with sports and games, anny sport and games are unclear to me , there can be multiple reasons. One reason could be simply the numbers: More man are playing so their bell curve completely covers the bellcurve of the female player population and since we forget about everyone at the bottom, we only see that the top has more males. Another reason might be that man in general are more competitive then woman, (due to hormons and maybe a different brain) Winning is important for man, while for woman in general doing things together with others might be more important (off course there exceptions, this is just a general picture) This could be a reason that women score worse results then man in competitions in wich physical force play no role, simply because they value thoose results less. Another reason could lie in the way the male and female brain differ, It is kinda dangerous to speculate about this since all to quick you are seen as someone who thinks man are superiour to women, this i definatly dont think! Personally i think the female brain is superiour to the male one, though it might be less suited for certain tasks, wich could make it less suited for certain games. Main reason for the worse results females score i think is the fact that man are more competitive in general.
So ya: Man are inherently better at sc and video games then women This is my opinnion.
Btw i dont mean to open up a can of worms with this thread, in the other thread people seem to be quiet sensitive about all this. Just lock the thread if its inapropiate but pls dont ban me lol. I made this just to respond to some of the remarks in another thread where some people stated that man and women are no different when it comes to games and personally i think they are so completely wrong that it justified a response and a thread on its own.

IMO this question isn't even worth asking without some sort of published paper or data to back up an opinion. At this point all we're doing is guessing.

Man = singular Men = plural
Just pointing that out.

This. Everyone in this thread will be putting forth ignorant opinions more influenced by emotions than facts.

Studies show women are better at multitasking and are more hardwired to be competitive than men.
I think the thing that holds them back is sheer numbers and the social stigma attached to female gamers.

I don't think it's that they are better but men are more competitive, more likely to become hooked on a video game like this and more likely to spend longer playing a video game than women. In general terms time invested == skill + some magic number of innate ability.
How many women do you know who will play a video game for 8 hours a day (maybe a couple who play WoW?). Now ask yourself how many men you know who find it okay to play a video game for that long.
For some reason our brains are wired to be able to do that, and keep interest in a game we're losing badly at. All the women I know don't see much point in playing a video game for longer than 2 hours at a time unless they're hooked on its story. And I've tried getting them interest in SC2, for whatever reason the general consensus for women on SC2 is "meh".

Evolution, women pick their partner, men just try to spread their stuff. So men always had to outperform others. (Or the alternative, because god made them to be)
|
You have to keep in mind that it's also the sample size, there are A LOT more guys playing the game then girls.
If you want an accurate representation of skill you would need to work off %'s, not just sheer numbers.
Also
So ya: Man are inherently better at sc and video games then women This is my opinnion. is a terrible conclusion to draw from your weird ramblings

From the data we have, we could as well draw the conclusion that Koreans are inherently better at SC(2), that Europeans and Southamerican people are better at soccer and that men are inherently more criminal...

What did I just read. Lol

not many people would say those are absurd or inaccurate claims....

Good luck with that comment.

So we, as an internet community, will discuss something that there is no scientific facts for whatsoever as of yet? Well gl hf.

Are men inherently better than super saiyans at starcraft?

men* On topic : the same applies to pretty much every video game i think . I know for a fact that cs 1.6 female for instance is a joke compared to the "mixed" cs 1.6. I don't really think women are inehrently worse, i just think there's less women > hence less good women ( good as in good at the game ) and therefore the skill level is below that of men which represent the vast majority of competitor / players of said game.

Scientifically, women, on average, have superior multitasking skills.
Men, on average, have better stamina for this sort of thing.
So I'd say it should be a wash, it's probably easier for men to practice a lot more though.

Wait, your argument is that men are better because you can't find a reason why women and men would have equal potential?
The list of social reasons is endless, but lets start with the simple stuff:
Video games is a male dominated hobby Video games are mainly marketed toward men Competative sports have been dominated by male only leagues since they were created, leading to limit participation in competative sports by women. In many cases, laws passed to assure that womens leagues were created in schools to address this issue. So on and so on
No evidence has been shows that either women or men would have any advantage in SC2. The current population of professional players cannot be used as evidence, as there are to many social reasons to explain why women are not playing SC2.
|
The ratio of men/women in gaming is somewhat skewed, so any "statistical" evidence will be somewhat shady imo.
Intuitively I refuse to believe that natural gaming talant is something decided by gender, that just seems stupid.

To add to an opinion stated by Hamdemon:
Men really do tend to be profoundly more intensely single minded than women. Social stigma aside, I think this is the next biggest thing you run into when trying to tackle this question. Women may be better at multitasking and be more competitive in some cases, but that kind of tunnel-visioned drive is definitely more prevalent in men.
