In a scarcely believable ruling, a panel of experts threw out a claim that regular water consumption is the best way to rehydrate the body. The bizarre diktat from Brussels has far-reaching implications for member states, including Britain, as no water sold in the EU can now claim to protect against dehydration.
So basically long story short the EU commission passed a law that says water doesn't hydrate.
In more detail the European Food Safety Authority’s panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies said that water did not hydrate or in other words it does not extinguish thirst for WATER.
Thirst for water is not extinguished by water if we are to believe the European commission.

I don't even get this... Why would they even bother labeling water as "not healthy"? Interesting, but pretty worthless imo

Anyone else thinks we are governed by a bunch of crazies? This is why less government or in this case unelected crazies the better.
I mean this is pretty much an attack on common sense. If water doesn't extinguish thirst for water what the hell can they make law next?

But really with all the problems EU is having im glad at least theres some ray of hope for the Euro.

The news threads on TL the last few days have been..... interesting to say the least lol. From girl dying of a 10min orgasm to pizza's being vegetables and now this. The world is going fucking nuts, just in time for 2012.

Well, distilled water doesn't hydrate, I believe, due to lack of electrolytes. :p
Not sure why they'd do this, though.

this isn't a real headline.. they're just saying a company can't claim medical worth of saving someone from dehydration by taking a swig of their water.. standard lawyer mumbojumbo for products..

It looks like you aren't reading it properly to me, it says that regular water is the best way to hydrate, its basically saying that branded water isn't the best way to hydrate. It sounds like its to stop sales of drinking water companies claiming their water is healthier than everything else.

If it wasn't for the acids in Gatorade and other similar drinks I would be drinking them all the time. I like my teeth too much, so I just stick to water...still think that water hydrates you though.

Truer words have not been spoken. I drink gatorade when attending dance events as that is the only thing that will keep you running during intense swing dances, latin dances, etc.
Water just doesn't fulfill the hydration requirements needed during intense dance sessions!

I'm really confused...umm...so what they're saying is basically dehydration is defined as reduced water in the body and the regular consumption of water won't rehydrate you? If I'm understanding this correctly which I doubt I am, the thought process is that even if you drink water on a daily basis it will not improve your average hydration levels but it will still help in more severe cases of dehydration?

Now, if you want to get technical, if someone is suffering from dehydration, then water is not a good (and even potentially dangerous) way of re-hydrating them. It is far better to use an electrolyte drink. Also, people are not reading between the lines of ruling far enough and relying on the tone of the extremely biased article - the ruling was meant to stop drink companies from promoting their water as more healthy, when in reality, simple tap water is probably more effective.
However, what I'll comment is that the world seems to be descending into big brother govt where they seem to want to regulate every bit of life. Which is guess is what the people are asking for as they get fooled by advertising gimmicks and sue/protest when they make stupid decisions. What happened to good old common sense?
