Just as the title says, i decided to make a thread about things you would do to improve the NASL, after reading the chat for a while i've noticed these few points:

1.- Add ingame music. The music gives a nice atmosphere while watching the matches.
2.- Add 3D portraits
3.- Add score display
4.- Better microphone quality for the casters
5.- More hype! (maybe music while they're talking)
6.- Avoid showing the lobby screen. (some like to see the pre-game chat like me but i guess some people don't)
7.- Instead of doing player profiles in one big batch at the start, put them inbetween sets
8.- Justin.tv logo is over the stats tabs (when stream is not in fullscreen)
9.- Put an observer in there so the commentators can focus on commentating. (i don't know if this is already how they're doing it)
10.- Disproportionate focus on some of the players activity.
11.- Improve editing all around. Obvious cuts between banter/into game.
12.- Stream is too bright for some people. (lighting on the casters too)
13.- Matches being spoiled in chat (i think nothing can be done here)
14.- Better control of the resources, income, units, units lost tabs (etc).
15.- Volume fluctuation.
16.- The NASL and the casters should inform the audience of what exactly is on the line . Is player gonna be eliminated? Will they advance? etc.
17.- Remembering to make the casters Refs, so they can tell the players to pause if they are lagging, etc.
18.- The Menu Bar (F10/F11/F12 buttons) at the top of the screen can be hidden in options.
19.- When you click on the schedule (http://nasl.tv/Match), and then click on a past matchup to watch the vods, you're immediately spoiled by the results of the match.
20.- I put this as spoiler as it is a big post. Also i believe the NASL staff already said they were going to call a sound technician.

[!] IMPORTANT tip about Audio Production [!]
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The compression (DRC) is seriously off, and I think I might know why.

Layman's explanation of what compression is/does:
+ Show Spoiler +

TIP: The Compression absolutely MUST be applied to the live audio. It is possible that you're adding compression to the post production, which is fine, you need to do this too, but it is super important that the live audio is compressed before it is recorded.

I can say for certain one of the following is true: (1) You are not applying Dynamic Range Compression to the live audio being recorded, or (2) You are not applying the DRC to the live audio properly.

The dynamic range in the levels for the finished product were way, way 'off,' to the point where I was babysitting the volume button and cringing during exciting moments because I could hear the clipping.

Theory: You want to apply the DRC to the live audio so the waveform that is being recorded has less dynamic range. This way the post production DRC can be used to refine and perfect the waveform (in combination with the EQ settings). If you record the audio without DRC then that is a whole process that is independent of the compression and the post production DRC is going to be somewhat ineffective because the overall waveform has already been produced.

TIP 2: If you're not already doing this, I highly recommend using a Noisegate filter also. Not a huge deal, but it will help.

TIP 3: I know you guys run practice sessions. Part of this needs to include the audio levels. You need to practice talking at a normal level then yelling out in excitement as loud as you would ever yell during a cast. Tweak the DRC and view the waveform until even with all those variable levels coming from the casters the waveform is still relatively "flat."

To the OP - To increase the chances of NASL seeing this message, will you add it to the OP?

I know the stream isn't perfect for everybody but that isn't what this thread should be about.

Thanks.

Pd. this is not a complain thread, i (and i think we all) would like so see the NASL as one of the best tournaments in america or even the world.

Better microphone quality for the casters
Instead of a 30 min preshow, just talk about the 2 players and the matchup before each series.
More hype! (maybe music while they're talking)

They can also remove the top menu bar, although it isn't that important, but there is just no need to see that menu bar.

Replace Gretorp. Sorry, but his voice isn't made for casting and his excitement sounds so fake it's annoying. Also, add transition screens. Like caster -> Interview, caster -> game.

And before I forget; don't show the lobby screen.

Everything is perfect for me except the fact that Gretorp isnt doing a good job and Incontrol is pulling his weight.

Better mic quality would be pretty nice. Other than that, everything has been pretty perfect IMO.

I haven't had any issues with the stream quality, but I kind of agree that Gretorp is not the most amusing caster. One of my perceived issues is the same I had with Kellymilkies when she started, in that when their co-caster makes a joke they tend to just ignore it, and it makes the humor seem a bit awkward.

Loving the matches so far thus far though!

My comments after the casting.

Exact points

-Use the follow unit hot key, the screen many of times was jerky while following armies/units.

-Spent over 10 in game minutes basically just watching and talking about what grubby was doing one game. Completely missed everything moon was doing during that time, magically discovered it later.

-One of the two HAS to be doing play by play, instead of spending both of their time completely focused on analysis and talking about strats etc...one of the two needs to have the focus of 'my job is to watch everything going on now'. Flipping back and forth between bases every time something new enters the production que, following the army movements etc.

-Any tab besides the production tab in a cast needs to be up briefly a comment made about it, and then the production tab should be back up.

-Casters should be careful what they say is 'bad' Example: Saying roaches were a bad response to thors....it's actually 'the' response to terran mech (pre hive). Sure torp and geoff are toss/terran...but if you're a top level caster, you still need to know how all 3 races work in general terms and what is good/bad.

-No background music made the games have very little ambiance during down times.

-Transitions between games felt overly rushed...sure you want a nice smooth transition but it was like game ends 3 comments...BAM new game.

-More hype before the games themselves, talk more about the players, what you expect to happen based on their previous play. This is the type of research casters need to do prior to a days events...you should know how these players all typically play

Closing thoughts for incontrol/gretorp

this sounds kind of brutal, but for both you guys you really need to make a decision. You can try to split time and be ok casters and ok players. You can focus mostly on playing and be ok to bad casters and good players. You can focus on casting and be good casters and ok to bad players relative to the top players of course.

Guys who are great casters like artosis and tasteless have said time and time again how little they get to focus on just playing the game. It's because they put being top quality casters above playing the game. If you two want to be the next tastetosis that's the sacrifice you guys would have to make. This if being the NASL casting team is that important to you.

If you think you can be top notch casters and be top notch players, I think you might be kidding yourselves. Especially when you're new to casting on a top level as far as casters go. That's not to knock you both, that's just the reality of casting versus playing on a top notch level. It's one or the other both just isn't practical.

If playing is more important maybe you guys should help NASL find people who want to dedicate their time to casting the NASL. That of course assuming NASL has the capability to pay someone to focus 100% on casting NASL.

Compared to Dreamhack this is a very poor showing.

-Mic Quality is poor
-Casters just don't work together and are horribly biased(incontrol especially), Gretorp or whatever he's called is just plain bad.
-In game settings could at least be on highest for the observer.
-Music. The lack of music makes it feel awkward.
-Observer missing key goings on around the map.
-The fact it's cast from replays means we don't get to see or feel any emotional connection with the players.

It may be before the first set is broadcast, but these games were recorded in advance. Any suggestions we make right now won't affect the current broadcast, so there is no reason not to critique it right now so they can improve tomorrow's broadcast

All I know is I am changing my volume up and down everytime gretorp gets excited. I've never heard him before, but he is honestly this is the most annoying cast I've ever heard.

Some above me are saying it's the mics fault, I don't know. But I am getting more and more tempted to watch on mute.
