Coach of Team STARTALE Won Jong-Wook, 'I'm crazy about e-sports.'

Ex-coach of WeMade Fox has now returned to the ranks of e-sports.

Coach Won has been working in other fields for 32 months since leaving WeMade Fox in 2008, but has now returned as Starcraft II has officially launched. He is now active with popular players such as HopeTorture (IntoTheRainbow), FantaPrime (JulyZerg), Superstar (Max).

He expressed that 'I've tried to forget everything about e-sports, but it was impossible. I think I'm crazy about e-sports.'

Q. You have returned after leaving the e-sports scene for 2 years.
A. I was away for about a year and 9 months. It was awkward at first, but now it feels more and more like home. It feels great. I'm so glad that I could make a return to e-sports.

Q. You have left after the creation of WeMade Fox.
A. There were many reasons, but I don't want to mention them again. The important thing is that I am back now. I've worked in e-sports since 2003, and it was tough to leave what I've been dedicated to for so long. I really tried to set my mind straight. I kept being reminded of e-sports so I even changed my phone number to live in a completely new world.

Q. How have you been since leaving e-sports?
A. I've tried to do many things like advertising and management. I've experienced a lot and realized how scary this world is. I've only done one semester of university and went straight to the army for 5 years. Therefore, my social life only consisted of army and e-sports. It was difficult to adjust and try other things in my 30's.

Q. I'm curious as to why you decided to return.
A. There were many reasons, one of them being the fact that I couldn't be influential in BW as I was just a part of the staff, but I thought that I could lead a team in my own direction in SCII. I saw a vision in SCII. I was sure that this game would be a huge success, so I figured that if I jumped in, there would be some way to the future. Honestly, the biggest reason why I returned is that I missed being with the players. I got to know a lot of friendly people and it was impossible to throw away those relationships and experiences.

Q. What did you do first after returning?
A. I gathered players, the first being HopeTorture and FantaPrime. It went very well and ended up forming a team with HopeTorture, FantaPrime, Ssoja and Silent_Control. There was a problem with housing and I managed to get an apartment, but it was too small, so I eventually got a big enough house a short distance away from the city.

Q. How does it feel to return?
A. Personally, it feels awesome. I was extremely lonely before, but now I feel much better. I think it's good that players too can learn from each other by living together. I was thinking of coming to work in the morning and leaving at night, but I was afraid of leaving the players alone so I'm living with them at the moment.

Q. There are only males in the team.
A. I want to accept female players as well. Living together will be questionable but I'm sure that she can come here in the morning and leave at night. I wish that there would be a player like TossGirl in SC2. If the girl is good enough, she deserves the same chances.

Q. You are very close with HopeTorture.
A. I'm specially thankful to him. We currently don't have a sponsor, but he's been doing so well. It's not like I take good care of him, so I can't thank him enough for that. I really hope that he does well in the future as well.

Q. I want to know why you made the team name STARTALE.
A. I thought about it a lot. I came up with a lot of names, but they were too common. STAR is from StarCraft and also means Star, as in celebrity. TALE means story so together STARTALE means both the story of StarCraft and story of a celebrity. I thought it was the best name ever so I unilaterally voted the name in and reported to others.

Q. Wasn't it hard to gather players?
A. Players like HopeTorture, FantaPrime and Superstar helped a lot. They made the initial decision, and they have name values as well. I'm thankful for them trusting in me as it would have been very hard without those players.

Q. You're close with HopeTorture even though you guys haven't been in the same team before.
A. I've been close with Nal_Ra, FruitDealer and HopeTorture for a long time. We used to go out for drinks and we've been keeping in touch. This relationship has helped me starting a team together with HopeTorture.

Q. What are you most focused about as a coach?
A. I'm trying to provide necessary things for the players. I can't promise everything since we don't have a sponsor and we're in a bad shape economically, so I'm always sorry. I even want to take a loan to take care of these guys. I also try to increase teamwork in the house. Superstar, HopeTorture and FantaPrime have been acting as coaches for the newer and younger players. I'm usually away, and players have been trying hard to fill in for me.

Q. How is the process of finding a sponsor?
A. There are a few people that are helping me out and a couple companies are in negotiation. I want to make a deal no matter how big the company is within this year. I hope for the best and wish to provide the players with the best environment.

Q. What do you want STARTALE to become?
A. I personally hate forced practice like a pig on its way to the slaughter house. There should be some room for freedom and I dream of a practice environment where a player can express uniqueness. I feel that players perform better with a better practice environment. Forced practice is nothing better than keyboard typing practice, and I'd rather have players play 10 games meaningfully than play 100 games forcefully.

Q. How do you predict the success of StarCraft II?
A. It will be a success for sure. It's got every element to be huge in e-sports. We live in a world where we can access the internet while walking, and we can't keep playing a game that's 10 years old. It's already proven by BW and SCII has just as much potential. There is already a bigger range of players and if this is what's become of SCII after such a short time of release, it's already half way there to being the next big thing.

Q. How do you picture yourself as a coach?
A. I don't have too big of an ambition. I want to lead a team in my own way. I just want to be a genuine, humane coach.

Q. What makes you lead a team in such hard conditions?
A. I think I'm insane. I'm crazy about e-sports. People will know the true attraction of e-sports once they experience it. There are other coaches other than myself that are not being paid at the moment. They're addicted too as if this game was marijuana. People told me that this was too much to handle, but I've come this far. However, I still know that there is a long way to go to be economically stable. I don't want to think that money is everything, the most important thing is passion and hope.

Q. Any comments to companies that are on the verge of sponsoring a team?
A. They should really listen to not only myself, but other coaches as well. We can tell them the vision of e-sports and the potential for success. The companies sponsoring BW are all big companies, that's the true effect of e-sports. I hope that they realize this can be a marketing opportunity and review it optimistically. I once read a study about the number of new STX recruits that became aware of the company after the creation of the STX pro-gaming team. WeMade Fox as well wasn't very famous before, but is now very popular. I think it's worth it to invest on an opportunity that can have this much effect. I will personally run with my negotiation paper to their office if they call me.

Q. Any last comments for the fans?
A. I've left in a surprise, but now I am back. Our team will try really hard and I hope the fans can keep supporting us. Please show love and attention to our players.

I know I did, too bad STX Brazil only have offices in Niterói, near Rio de Janeiro.

I'm a fan. Seems like a great person to be leading and coaching the team. I really wish I could see them play in like 8 or 9 hours. But I need sleep

Excellent translation.

And this coach seems really passionate for esport, but doesn't force train his players, awesome. I hope they'll get sponsored soon.

saw this earlier when grabbing the proleague pictures from fomos, thanks for translating~

i think "unilaterally" might be better than "unanimously" in the question about team name, but it's not a big deal

Wow i am now a fan. This really make me happy how he train his player, maybe this is the end of teh slave era? and the question about how big sc2 will be make me even more happy

What is exactly the role of an esports coach ? Does he try to find new builds, new ways to plays, does he study the game, does he theorycraft a lot ? Or is it more a manager, trying to find funds, new players, kind of a more administrating job ?

Q. How do you picture yourself as a coach?
A. I don't have too big of an ambition. I want to lead a team in my own way. I just want to be a genuine, humane coach.

This guy's a baller, hopefully they'll find a sponsor soon though, must've been tough running a team all by yourself...

awesome interviews, thanks for translating.

he sounds like an absolute baller. Great translation, i feel it really captured his passion and spirit. Really hope they can pick up a sponsor and a female gamer :O

Thinking about it some more, he does remind me of coach Cho in a way... really cares about his players, doesn't have many resources (cj was like the last team to get a sponsor), has a passion for esports, etc. they are still different in many ways (iirc cj under coach cho practiced the most out of any team) i hope he can be as successful as coach cho eventually was, only sooner.
