It's nothing to do with PEDMAS/BODMAS. How would you write 48/2 multiplied by (9+3) then?

Meh, its just notation semantics not really a math problem.

Tarski would beg to differ. Math is a language and all issues with it´s semantics are actually math problems.

Why are people still arguing? I thought the answer is obvious.

I don't what you're seeing, but as far as I can see the answer is 2.

i'd say no. However maybe it is because of an algebraic convention
If it was:
48/2n
would u say 24/n? or 24n?

24n

if you actually wrote 48/2n left to right in a line in a maths exam, it would be treated as 24n and you would lose marks if you meant 24/n, unless you wrote the expression as

48
----
2n

I am down but I am far from over

I answered 2. Pretty simple why I was wrong. I never write division in a line. But like this:

48
----------
2

So when I see 48/2*12, it looks to me like the 2*12 is under the line.

48/2(9+3) i dunno about you guys but this is

48
-------
2(9+3)

so first we make 2*9 + 2*3 = 18+6 = 24

then 48 / 24 = 2 thanks...

this is right wtv people say so wtv im engineer ;(

Except none of this is math knowledge, it is just an equation written really ambiguously.

This is basic mathematics where you learn about priorities of things.

People are probably looking at it as

48
------
2(12)

rather than the way it is written, which most American math students see little of; they jump straight into computing and writing problems as fractions.

Another failure of our shitty education system

How you should interpret this expression, from the perspective of a practicing mathematician:

1. 48 / 2 * (3 + 9) = 288, unambiguously.

2. 48 / 2(3+9) should probably be read as inline notation for 48 over 2 * (3+9), hence 2. If this is not clear from context, seek clarification.

3. 48 DivisionSymbol 2(3+9). Mathematical writing style indicates a good chance that the author is confused, or trying to confuse. Seek clarification.

Explanation of #3: division symbols are not really used outside of high school and elementary school classrooms. Also, if an expression refers to a calculation to be performed, then good style would indicate that all operators should be written out explicitly, as in #1. If an expression refers to the result of a calculation, then it should be simplified as much as possible, and can then be written as an inline fraction as in #2. An example where an inline fraction would be appropriate is if the result of a calculation involves indeterminates, such as 48 / 2(x+y).

I didn't know there were all kinds of different ways of writing the acronym. I learned BEDMAS, and I got 288. Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

Still dont get how so many people come up with two, actually took me some time to see why. 150 trolls?
Maybe this has to do with how you are taught to read equations in school.

The question here isn't how to evaluate a/b*c but if an omitted multiplication sign has higher priority than normal multiplication.
But the one thing I've learned after professors abusing notation in so many ways is that you define mathematical symbols just like it is convenient for you.

12/2(n+y) = 6(n+y) or 12/(2n+2y)? It has always been 12/(2n+2y) for me, regardless of what math course from middle school to university.

This.

It is poorly written as to actually suggest multiple ways of doing it, if that isn't ambiguous, I am not sure what is.
