I did it quickly and got 288. THEN I thought it was some kind of trick question and looked at it closer, and clicked on "2" with the "fuck yeah" expression on my face. Now I'm kicking myself cause I'm a fucking retard.

Those brackets don't go away, after the 9+3. The question is still 48 / 2(12) which means the brackets still have priority over the "/."

Math was a subject I was always hit or miss in I either got it right away or had to sit down and actually sit down and mass problems until it 'clicked'. I ended up with 288 though. Then when I looked at it again I could see why some people would assume 2 if you just glance that the problem. In my head I just went 48÷2(9+3) -> 48÷2*12 -> 24*12 = 288

'Tricky' questions are the bane of math.

P in PEMDAS means whats in the parenthesis, but when you treat the parenthetical as a multiplication, its just a multiplication

So it becomes 48/2*(9+3)

so you do parenthesis first

48/2*12

then order of operations, 48/2 first

24*12

which is 288

ROFL wtf, you site PEMDAS, but then you use it wrong? You best be trolling.

48/2 is not first because it is D(ivision). You have to do the M(ultiplication) first, thus getting 2. I feel like this is a 4chan thread where everyone is just getting trolled by OP.

This is why PEMDAS/BEDMAS is stupid. D and M have the same priority, S and A have the same priority, but B and E have different priorities. These things that people come up with to teach kids math just confused the hell out of me and I always turned my brain off when people tried to teach this to me

No, the brackets there do nothing more. They might as well not exist, and mathematical convention dictates that two things next to each other with no operator is assumed to be a multiplication.

This is actually a fantastic question for an elementary math course. All throughout high school, even in AP calculus, people would get questions wrong because they screw up order of operations when using division in their calculator.

no, actually not ! thing is, the way people "learn" math leaves room for ambiguity, but when it comes to typing out equations, there is no such thing as ambiguosly writing.

one can misread an equation when it´s handwritten and things like a^(b*c) really "look like" a^b^c , but when you type it out, there shouldn´t be any sort of ambiguity.

LOL it helps to remember priority, all you have to memember is that addition and subtraction as well as multiplication and division has the same priority.... if you can't remember that then you are not smarter then a body builder

Division and Multiplication have the same priority, same goes for Addition and Subtraction. The acronym could just as easily be PEMDAS, PEMDSA, PEDMSA...

Lol, I voted 2 =P.

My mistake was assuming that 48 / 2(9+3) was somehow different from 48 / 2 * (9+3).
