Why did Blizzard sue ogn for a lot of money and try to shut them down if they don't pay if you are just going to end up paying ogn and gom a lot of money every year anyways?

Why isn't that type of investment sustainable for Blizzard?

You do know that they make BILLIONS of dollars annually from World of Warcraft alone? Blizzard can make two in-game pets for Warcraft and generate the extra income to inject this type of money into whatever they want. Mike Morhaime has publicly stated that Starcraft is his favorite Blizzard franchise, it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that the acting CEO and co-founder of Blizzard wants to use some of what they're making to try and take Starcraft to a new level.

Blizzard sponsoring eSports so that their own brand and title becomes even larger as a result? For basically pennies compared to their total annual revenue?

wait what... could you explain your line of reasoning regarding this O_o.

Reading between the lines: The next OSL couldn't attract a sponsor and was close to getting canned, Blizzard realized that it's game takes a big hit by not being broadcast on Korean TV (legitimacy, potential closure of KESPA SC2 teams, advertising) so it asked what it has to do to make sure that a tournament runs on OGN similar to the OSL. OGN said "Lots of money" Blizzard said "well that IS a lot of money" considering they already do stuff with GOMTV, they might have decided "we'll pay the money but we're going to consolidate GSL and OSL and we'll have one big korean individual league (hence why rain, the former OSL champion now has a code S seed).

TLDR: Blizzard Consolidating GSL and OSL and paying money to ensure SC2 remains broadcast on OGN.

The reason KESPA isn't necessarily mentioned here is because they don't own the OSL, OGN does.

I remember 2 years ago when the first rumor about D3 in consoles was released. fanboys jumped with the argument, STOP BITCHING BEFORE THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT.

blizard is enemy of kespa, it's logical to try to remove them from the scene.

Nice, just having the one league in Korea would make sense due to it being easier for Blizzard to control and better for spectators. Having so many tournaments around the world Blizzard has always said it doesn't like there being "so many" so maybe it is starting to control this with their money influx.
Would make sense the reason why Rain got a seed too, in terms of they wanted the big KESPA players to be in Code S come next season.

$1.8M a year being invested in a league and all i see are people bitching about blizzard getting involved without even knowing what blizzard is doing. seems par for the course on the forums.

I feel like the reason we have a discussion forum with threads about different topics is that people can come and offer their opinions, even speculation, even if it contradicts or dissents from what other people are saying. In this case, we do know Blizzard's history in Korea hasn't been perfect, so there may be some stock to the idea that they are, like the owner of an exotic pet, messing with something they don't fully understand.

That's not what he's saying and you know it. He's merely commenting on the fact that people are bitching about something they don't even know all of the facts about yet, which TeamLiquid does all the goddamned time, and how stupid it is. Which is a valid criticism. To say that he's trying to complain about differing opinions is to mischaracterize his legitimate point - that the opinions are misinformed and premature.

I for one agree wholeheartedly. Blizzard is coming in to put some change in the scene, has agreed to pump 2 million MORE dollars a year (on top of the millions they already pump in despite the thankless fans) into a company in order to cut down on competition in the Korean tournament scene and consolidate them. It's a simple reason too - there's not enough fans in Korea to support an OSL, a GSL, and a Proleague. Combine two of them (or at least link them well enough to merge their fanbases) and suddenly you have a much healthier SC2 Korea tournament scene.

But no, Blizzard are evil. Because....LAN? Are we still on about LAN? Is that still a thing?

Besides the NASL, there isn't really any other tournaments similar to the GSL and OSL.

Not only that, in South Korea there is anything but tournament saturation. With 1 less tournament, that means less prize money to go around (and there are a ton of SC2 Korean pro gamers that earn based only on tournaments rather than salaries).

BW lived years off of two major individual tournaments the MSL and the OSL (and at one point, GOMTV also had their own tournaments too which everyone also liked until KeSPA made them back off due to the Blizzard fiasco).

It's a simple reason too - there's not enough fans in Korea to support an OSL, a GSL, and a Proleague. Combine two of them (or at least link them well enough to merge their fanbases) and suddenly you have a much healthier SC2 Korea tournament scene.

For Proleague, it's the *sponsors that pay and decide if there is enough viewers (that, and Proleague is excluded from the deal anyway, so any talk about Proleague, it doesn't affect them at least not "directly").

*The sponsors still seem interested enough (Woongjin, despite being in financial trouble, seems to be happy with their team and their results in pro league, so it seems the sponsorship will remain).

We already know the GSL is doing well.

OSL, I have no idea.

There isn't really any oversaturation in South Korea. It's not like viewers have to choose "do I watch GSL or OSL?". Most people just watch the same thing (that is, if Jaedong is playing the OSL, they'll watch, if he's playing in the GSL - If Jaedong ends up in OSL and GSL and Proleague at the same time, people are going to be watching all of them, for example). Also not many Korean fans of SC2 bother watching much foreign tournaments (oversaturation is only a problem for us since we watch everyone).

Edit - I know it may seem cheating to say if "Jaedong plays in <x>" people will watch. This applies to any player really. If, a Korean fan watched only the GSL but has become a fan of MVP or Nestea (for example), thanks to the GSL. And they find out, not only are MVP and Nestea playing in the GSL but the OSL too! They want more of Nestea or MVP, then they'll watch the OSL too. Since OSL and GSL feature basically the same set of players and since the tournament formats are practically the same too, it just means basically more of what they like (if they are liking it). Again, remember that Koreans don't watch many foreign tournaments, so for them, these are just the tournaments they have. (Neither GSL or OSL or Proleague are subscription or pay to watch either, so the only issue for them is time spent watching it. And most fans of a player will probably be happy that <x> or <y> player they really like has 2-3 opportunities to play in 2-3 tournaments in Korea.)

But to be fair BW was pretty consolidated in Korea and had a smaller global player pool and a much small pool of tournaments with cash pay outs. I think long commitment tournaments have to compete with a bunch of smaller tournaments (weekend stuff, online stuff) with players and teams kind of deciding a dollars per minute kind of thing.

I really don't get this.
Why wouldn't blizzard give money to mlg / dh / iem etc as well to run a "blizzard league"?
Western lans making more money than korean pro gaming broadcasts ?

edit : and why not make something more international rather in China for instance (since sc2 numbers in korea fail hardcore)
broadcast companies do exist as well over there

No it's not logical if they care about Esports, because largest companies of Korea are behind Kespa and they are sponsoring all those Kespa teams.

Eliminating Kespa would mean that Esports of Korea are only sustained by foreign viewers and foreign market. Which would suck tbh. There are few exceptions, like LG-IM and stuff, but it is in the minority.

While I will miss whichever organizations that may not be left standing, I will be satisfied as long as the remaining can run their own tournaments... namely, the map pool not be dictated by Blizzard.
