I don't think CLG threw the game at all. They got caught a few times at the start of the game, and WE is extremely well coordinated. They played a bad game, WE played very well, and CLG know it. They are most likely relieved that they played poorly in a game that didn't mean too much, if anything.

I would be AMAZED if clg had actually won the game knowing they would throw away a free(ish) shot to the finals.

I'm not convinced that they threw it but I do think that SK will be a much easier game for them than eHome. I think they wanted to let HSGG try Zilean because they didn't have much to lose and after the game started going bad they just sort of started to dick around. Evidenced by the surrender and by the retarded mistakes they made that are even more retarded than what they normally do. I guess we'll know for sure when/if they face WE again in the finals.

You are aware that you just said HSGG playing Zilean constitutes a serious game? Over, like, I dont know, either the best or second best zilean in the WORLD depending on where you rank regi vs jiji?

That's just the thing about Jiji his Zilean is easy to argue one of the best in the world, however his Ori is better than his Zilean. I can see people wanting to suggest it was a troll/throw away game, but they ran double ap against double ap and got beat. All the evidence suggests that there were issues with the game that put CLG behind and with the coordination of WE they weren't able to recover. Elementz summed it up best in his interview after the game.

-.- well i think the finals woudl be a better indication of true skill level... altho I would love (as chinese) for the chinese teams to be that boss... i really dont like the authenticity of a game in which CLG goes 19-3...

I doubt they threw the game. They seemingly came in pretty confident and they had the leeway to try something new. Then there were some technical difficulties which stacked on to a few poor decisions and they ended up getting punished very hard for them. The game snowballed out of hand and they seemed to say 'fuck it' halfway through the game because it didn't matter too much if they ended up winning it anyway. Not a thrown game, but a trolly game with bad play and technical mishaps. CLG would have been pissed if the game actually mattered and they were certainly somewhat lucky that it didn't matter.

I think it's hard to argue that his Orianna is stronger than his Zilean, especially from a relative perspective where there are much fewer players whose Zilean stands out, whereas Orianna is arguably scary in anybody's hands.

In response to some of the complaints from yesterday (couldn't answer any earlier, they simply turned off the power at the event after the last match ):

I definitely like the idea of having a GSL-like groupstage. I'll bring it up but I doubt that it will be a real option for this running season. It's true that our events were often plagued with these three-way-ties although they sometimes produce awesome tiebreakers like last CeBIT in StarCraft II (Squirtle, Socke, SjoW all being tied)...

After Dreamhack we were discussing a tiebreaker and we first decided to go by "buildings destroyed" as a deciding factor. Riot were the ones that came up with the idea of the time coefficient and we liked it. Although some of you are bringing up valid weaknesses of this you all ignored the fact that instead of turtleing you could also go for a early-/mid-game-centric teamcomp and try to finish the game as fast as possible. At gamescom the teams were very aware of the rule and they never played awfully defensive or way too offensive. It was more of a "never give up a match"-kind of attitude with teams like fnatic or Millenium since an ACE in the later stages of a LoL match can turn it completely around.

As for this event: I'm extremely sad to see IG out. I felt like they were the best team here and they deserved to advance from their group. I really hope to see them again at one of our future Global Challenges. In general I expect a lot of activity from the Chinese community in the coming events.

Oh yeah before I forget: CLG definitely did not throw the game against WE. They probably had in mind that they would face SK if they lose and were okay with that but they definitely didn't plan to lose on purpose. They wanted to try Urgot (which Hotshot later blamed to be one of the reasons they lost) and Hotshot's screen appearently turned off twice during the match (right when he was killed the first and second time). SK players standing next to him confirmed this but unfortunately I couldn't see it. When I then positioned behind him nothing happened. They decided to go for a last resort kind of Baron-attempt as they were way too far behind in farm at that point. As that failed they simply let WE push and finish the match as they didn't believe in any chance to still turn that game around.

I spoke to CLG after the game against WE. They definitely didn't throw the game. The guys were furious--Hotshot was really unhappy about some technical issue he was encountering--and from what I can tell, they really wanted to win.

They may just get a rematch in the finals. Or, I don't know, the game for third place

Part of me wants SK to win just so there isn't that risk of them having Ocelote cast some.

Real reason - I just copy/pasted from the Gamescom thread and must have missed it.

I don't quite understand the "instead of" part of this sentence when applied to the last match of group A. If iG won their match against SK, they advanced if the game took 3 minutes or if it took 1,000 hours. Rushing to victory does not affect any outcome in regards to iG.

Meanwhile, time only comes into play if they lost. Knowing this and assuming they had calculated they needed to survive X minutes, a smart team captain can come up with a composition designed to last that long but not win. Playing to win quickly does not help this outcome - only turtling and playing to survive until X time does.

You could be indicating that this applies to iG's other games. However, such a theory doesn't hold water. Winning is difficult - a team won't rush a risky win just in case of a tie. They will just do what will win the current game and assume they won't be in a tie situation. Especially as they cannot know which games will count in a tie situation from the get-go (the times against the last place team of group A were not used) and because they can just do the above if they do find themselves in that situation. To make a rough analogy: It would be akin to using time to determine SC2 tie-breakers, and expecting players to do things like 6-pool for quick victories over hiding buildings to extend their opponent's victory time to better their odds of advancement in a tie situation.

It could be that you meant that SK should go for an early game team comp to win quickly. This would be like all-inning someone expecting an all-in already in SC2. The team trying to just survive would already be playing exclusively to not lose to that, and while it may be successful, the odds are still stacked against them. Basically - the team with the most control still remains iG if they decided to play to survive as SK's attempt to rush victory just plays into what iG is specifically playing against anyway.

That teams have not abused this rule yet doesn't mean they won't start. It just isn't smart not to do the play that gives one a nearly guaranteed chance of advancing over a riskier normal game. Just my two cents.
The melody of logic always plays the notes of truth.
