TSL3 Pre-Round of 32 Interviews
Part 7 of 8

We are happy to continue the Pre-Round of 32 Interview series, today we start on day 4 with EG.IdrA, coL.CrunCher, Empire.Kas, and Liquid`Haypro.

EG.IdrA

Q: You recently returned to the United States. Are you happy with how Korea turned out for you? You spent several years there.

I'm happy, even if my career had ended with Starcraft 1 it would have been a really cool experience - getting to live in another country and make a living doing what I love. But given the success of Starcraft 2 it was not only a cool experience but also really good for me professionally, as there's no better preparation for SC2 than years of SC1 practice in Korea.

Q: Do you have plans to return to Korea or will you be playing in only international events for the near future?

It's entirely possible I'll end up living in Korea again in the future if ESPORTS doesn't take off outside Korea or if Starcraft 2 takes over entirely in Korea. But for the time being my focus will be on international events, though I'll be happy to travel to any Korean events that don't conflict with other tournaments.

Q: You also participated in both TSL1 and TSL2. Is there anyone you want to face in the TSL3? What are your goals?

My goal going in to any tournament is to win it, no matter how difficult that may be. I see no point in playing a tournament that you don't intend to win. Nony knocked me out of TSL2 and beat me easily in a showmatch last time we played in SC2 so I'd kind of like to play him. There's no one I'd really consider a rival though.

Q: Your first round opponent is a relatively unknown player - Cruncher. What are your thoughts about him?

I'm approaching the match as if it were a walkover.

Q: Are you confident you can beat him? Do you expect him to do any risky strategies against you?

Yes, he's going to 4 gate all-in both games unless he decides to be clever and make voidrays or DTs.

Q: Many fans are saying the Koreans will dominate this tournament. Do you feel that this is inevitable or do the international players have a good chance?

The Koreans are better players and the best Koreans have the higher seed and latency advantage on the best international players so the top Koreans will probably dominate the tournament.

Q: Are you happy with the brackets? Do you feel you have an easier or harder quadrant/half of the bracket?

My initial two matches should be pretty easy, Mondragon is certainly capable of being very good but as far as I know he's still focusing on school and I'm very comfortable ZvZ right now. The third match could be very difficult if I play vs Nestea, but he'll have to play on North America vs Ret so there's a significant possibility Ret will knock him out. I think me vs Ret would be a coinflip and the winner would go to the finals pretty easily.

Q: If you had to introduce yourself to our fans who never met you, how would you describe yourself? Write a few sentences about your personality.

Personality should be irrelevant. This is a computer game tournament, not a dating show.

Q: What do you think are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as a player?

My mechanics and multitasking are my strengths. Because of that I'm relatively weak to allin and risky/strategical builds since they don't allow me to play to my strengths.

Q: Which matches (other than your own) are you interested in? Why? Who do you believe will win?

Ret vs Naniwa and Kas vs Haypro mainly. I don't think any of the Korean's matches will be close first round, except maybe Boxer's. Ret can be really really good but Naniwa is decent and its PvZ so that should be a pretty close matchup. Kas vs Haypro, Haypro's much better than most people realize and Kas seems to be quite good online so that should be another close matchup between relatively good players. I'd expect Haypro to win that one.

Q: Do you have anything to say to your fans and supporters before the Round of 32?

Thank you all for your support.

Q: You qualified for the TSL relatively early. Give us your thoughts on the qualifiers. Have you been watching the later qualifiers?

I haven't paid too much attention to the qualifiers, I usually just check the finals to see who won/lost.

Q: What are your goals for the TSL3? Do you feel you have something to prove?

To get as far as possible. I've been practicing a lot and want to prove to myself that I can go far.

Q: Your first round opponent is EG.Idra. How do you feel about him? Are you confident you can beat him?

I am confident against him.

Q: Will you have any special strategies planned for Idra? How are you preparing for him? How are you approaching this match?

I will indeed. I've been practicing a lot and feel I am prepared.

Q: Many fans view you as an underdog in this series. Do you like being the underdog? What is your mindset?

I enjoy being viewed as the underdog. My mindset is the same as preparing for any other tournament, focus and play well the day of the match.

Q: If you had to introduce yourself to our fans who never met you, how would you describe yourself? Write a few sentences about your personality.

I enjoy having a good time with the game. I love playing differently styles, whether it is cheesy, unique, or macro. I get bored of playing the same style over and over.

Q: What do you think are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as a player?

My greatest strength is having tons of different strategies prepared, but that is my weakness at the same time, since I have to practice all the different styles.

Q: Which matches (other than your own) are you interested in? Why? Who do you believe will win?

I'm interested in Tyler's match. Seeing as he won the last TSL, and he also doesn't play in tournaments too often compared to most of the other players, so it would be nice to see his play style. As for who will win: a Korean?

Q: Do you have anything to say to your fans and supporters before the Round of 32?

Hope you enjoy my games and cheer for me .

Empire.Kas

Q: You were the first player to qualify for the TSL. What are your thoughts about the TSL qualifiers? What are your goals for the TSL? Have you been practicing hard since qualifying?

I am very glad that I could qualify for TSL3, this is a grand tournament where I will try to prove myself and show that I can compete with the best players. My goal is to play well and that will be very difficult against players of such high class.

Q: Your opponent is Liquid`Haypro who is currently training in Korea. What are your thoughts about him? Are you confident you can win?

In Europe there are not many good Zergs, so this is a weakness of mine. Haypro on the other hand is living in Korea and seeing the world's best Zergs, so I expect it to be very close and . I would call Haypro the favorite, but I will try to prove I can compete against the best.

Q: Many fans believe the Koreans will dominate the TSL3. Do you feel the non-Korean players will do well against the Koreans? Why or why not?

I will wait for the outcome of those games impatiently, I will not guess the outcome. I hope the Europeans will show everything they have.

Q: You are one of three Ukrainians who qualified for the TSL. Why do you think there are so many good players from your country?

Ukraine is an industrious nation , we can set goals and achieve them.

Q: If you had to introduce yourself to our fans who never met you, how would you describe yourself? Write a few sentences about your personality.

I am a person who always strives to achieve. Very focused and emotional, I try to be a good person who still believes in fairy tales.

Q: What do you think are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as a player?

My strengths are that I can play any style, I feel the game out and can arrange any counter that is needed. Weakness is definitely sometimes there is no clear plan for the game and I sometimes mess up macro because of so little Brood War experience.

Q: Which matches (other than your own) are you interested in?

It is interesting to look for the Koreans, and in general I will look out for them. I am interesting in every game.

Q: Do you have anything to say to your fans and supporters before the Round of 32?

Thank you all for supporting me, I will show what I can do.

Liquid`Haypro

Q: Your first round opponent is Empire.Kas, who is currently the #1 ranked TLPD European player. What are your thoughts about him as a player?

Kas seems to be a really good Terran player.

Q: How will you prepare against Kas? Are you confident?

I'm playing a lot on the US server to prepare for this match.

Q: Recently you were knocked out of GSL Code A by Ganzi. Do you feel you have something to prove? What are your goals for the TSL?

I'm going into this TSL to win.

Q: How is the oGs-Liquid house now that Ret is gone? How are you doing over there?

Its better now, we've done a lot of improvements and upgrades in the last two weeks after Ret's departure. Things are looking better than ever.

Q: Do you feel the Koreans will just dominate this TSL3 or do you feel the NA/EU players will do well against them? Who is likely to be "upset?"

I think if the Koreans take this as seriously as GSL a player from the Kr server will win. I think Ret is the player most likely to win besides Kr server players.

Q: If you had to introduce yourself to our fans who never met you, how would you describe yourself? Write a few sentences about your personality.

I'm a Swedish SC2-player living in Korea where I play in the GSL. I'm a kind and hard working person. In the oGs-Liquid house I'm known as the movie guy and my favorite TV show is Smallville.

Q: What do you think are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as a player?

my greatest strength is my ability to make the right choices, and my weakness is protoss.

Q: Which matches (other than your own) are you interested in? Why? Who do you believe will win?

I'm looking forward to Morrow vs Jinro, best Swede outside of Korea vs best Swede in Korea. Idra vs Cruncher is supposed to be a really good match, and of course the grudge match between Ret and Naniwa.

Q: Do you have anything to say to your fans and supporters before the Round of 32?

I want to thank everyone who keeps cheering for me even though I keep losing in the first round of GSL.

That brings us almost to the entirety of the round of 32, be ready for tomorrow when we finish up!

I loved what he said there, just spot on. I would still love Idra being completely walked over by Cruncher, that would be funny. Just great to have such a villain, you love them losing, but you still kind of cheer on them. It's weird.

I love IdrA's attitude in his interview. Cocky as ever! I was afraid he was losing interest in playing since leaving Korea and losing IEM, he didn't sound optimistic. This weekend is shaping up to be just as excellent as the last, though!

I love how straightforward IdrA is. ^^

Also hope it goes well for HayPrO, feels like to many people seems to underestimate him.

Funny to see that this interviews are all done before the tournament started.
As Idra expected Boxer vs Nightend was close but i think he never thought about thorzain could win, i dont even talk from hasuobs vs huk (quote from idra: "hasuobs is bad" (ok not exactly this words but i wont write the words he did ...))

Sigh. Idra confidently asserting how his opponent will play the next game in the prematch interviews, and acting accordingly, is part of what got him kicked out of TSL2. If Cruncher has even half a brain, he'll have a couple of fake 4gate builds lined up to take advantage. Also a real 4gate masquerading as a fake 4gate for a followup.

I suppose it's too late to change my liquibet to Cruncher...

Cruncher definitely has a chance due to the matchup, especially since the games were likely played before patch, but when they played on justin.tv invitational it didn't look like he was very good once the game last longer than 12 minutes or so.

It's funny how they chose that photo as Cruncher in the banner. I understand that they probably don't have any other photo available but seeing almost everyone else looking forward and with him staring at Idra's ear is just funny.

I've got a bad feeling about IdrA vs Cruncher. I REALLY want IdrA to win and get some of what he deserves for working hard at the game for so so long. But seriously, I would hate to see it go south...

I'm looking forward to Morrow vs Jinro, best Swede outside of Korea vs best Swede in Korea. Idra vs Cruncher is supposed to be a really good match, and of course the grudge match between Ret and Naniwa.

it kinda is big difference, especially for zvp.

IdrA played him in the JTV invite tournament recently and Cruncher was falling apart trying to play a macro game against IdrA...but we will see

I think for reference, some of the newer members should look at IdrA's interview before he played NonY last TSL.

+ Show Spoiler [IdrA interview from TSL2] +

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
What is your prediction for this match? Are you going to defeat Nony?

IdrA[Media]:
Of course I will. I actually gained a lot of confidence from our seed match. His only real chance to beat me is cheese, and the Destination game where he cheesed demonstrated just how uncomfortable he is with that style of play. He opened gas rush, which is good, but then went fast nexus which threw away that advantage, and then went blatantly obvious carriers when my fast cc would allow me to timing push freely, even while getting a 3rd cc.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
Were you impressed by Nony's 6-0 against Horror and Tarson?

IdrA[Media]:
If I beat him 3-2 BBS vs double nexus every game it would be more impressive than beating a European Terran 3-0 PvT.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
What do you think about his prediction that he will beat you?

IdrA[Media]:
Only emo or falsely modest Europeans predict that they're going to lose games. Confidence is everything in any kind of competition. If you don't absolutely expect to win, you don't really have much of a chance. So yes of course he says that, but it doesn't mean anything.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
How will you counter double nexus and the unit that kills everything?

IdrA[Media]:
Trick question? Double nexus doesn't have a counter.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
So if Nony goes double nexus every game, you might lose?

IdrA[Media]:
Nah, if he can get a free double nexus diagonal positions on Andromeda and still almost lose, it won't really matter what builds he does.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
Will it be a 3-0 victory for you?

IdrA[Media]:
Yes.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
What are your predictions for the other matchups?

IdrA[Media]
Ret vs Sen I dont really know, I've heard Sen's zvz is really good and theres always the luck factor. I'd imagine it'll be 3-2 either way with Ret more likely to win. White-Ra vs JF I don't know much about either, but Ra is the better player. JF's play wasn't nearly as impressive against Terran as a lot of people seemed to think, and he's up against another Protoss this time. White-Ra should win. Mondragon vs Fenix I think Mondragon will win 3-1, but it's not impossible for Fenix. Mondragon will be much more capable of dealing with unusual strategies than Kolll, and I think Brat's standard TvZ is better than Fenix's.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
Is Nony your biggest threat?

IdrA[Media]
No, I think the Ra vs JF winner will be more dangerous simply because they're more comfortable with cheesy, abusive play. If Nony wants to play to my weaknesses, he takes himself out of his element as well, so while he is the more skilled player, I'm much more comfortable with him style wise.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
Hypothetically, if Nony wins, what would you say to him?

IdrA[Media]:
I don't know, I've never really been a fan of thinking about situations that aren't gonna happen. Seems kinda like a waste of time.

PokerStrategy.com TSL:
Thanks for the interview and we look forward to your games!

IdrA[Media]:
Thanks, I hope they're good.

It's a shame Idra and MC ended up on opposite sides of the bracket.

As for Haypro's response to Ret leaving you have to know that any answer without the obligatory knee jerk "we're sad to see him leave but..." is going to sound cold. Assuming he didn't mean it like it came off I was laughing pretty hard at how that looked in print.

Yes it's so much better now that you're gone, teamy!

Edit: They couldn't have put Cruncher's portrait on the far right?

Idra's interviews are always straight forward and honest, but I sense a little extra trolling for the 'TL official front page' interview . Hilarious as always.

I wonder if Cruncher really does have something cooked up like he says. Maybe something like the Immortal/Zealot Warp Prism rush Kiwi pulled on Idra at MLG. I think he'll need a funky rush like that to take a game.

I don't, it's purely an educated guess based on a few things which might sound so tenuous I'm not going to state them. The players aren't allowed to tell when the matches were played so we aren't going to know until the matches air.

That's so hilarious. For some reason, this made me think of taking everyone's NASL application videos, and splicing them together into a celebrity squares parody show with a voiceover asking dating questions.

Haypro's comment about ret seemed much more interesting than Idra's tbh. But it probably just came out wrong and isnt as juicy as some of us think . Idra should win, but ZvT is never guaranteed if someone can 4gate really well with some shenanigans slipped in on top of that.

I know Morrow have played on the TSL maps (the one where you can't see whom he is playing against) after his first round games against Jinro. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the first round and perhaps some of the second as well has already been played.

HayprO's comment is not taken out of context, it's just sarcastic Haypro and Ret shit-talk each other quite regularly (see: TL weeklies where they were both interviewed + Haypro's stream from time to time).

IdrA, confident as ever. I will watch eagerly

IdrA's got them populartization skills. The more he trashtalks and loses the more attention he's going to get. I'd prefer to just see him win though and do an MC; winning the finals exactly according to his own predictions. Go IdrA!

Also rooting for Haypro in the other match. I was impressed by the very long game he showed in Code A this season, it would be great to see him win for once.

I don't really think we've seen ret's full potential in Korea. I remember he was interviewed after 2 seasons (one where me made it to ro32, and one where he played all those code S / A matches or w/e where he didn't do that well) and he said he didn't get to practice much for some reasons. Then he gets eliminated from code A this season and apparently again he was lacking practice. Now TSL starts and he says he's been sick so he hasn't practiced as much as he would like =/. Kinda reminds me of brood war nony lol

Q: If you had to introduce yourself to our fans who never met you, how would you describe yourself? Write a few sentences about your personality.

Personality should be irrelevant. This is a computer game tournament, not a dating show.

Am I really the only person that thought this was a stupid answer?
It's an easy answer and ok if it was just supposed to be funny, but as real opinion it shows terrible insight in what makes anyone care about the results of said computer game tournament.

Fans are 100% emotion-made, and personality is definitely somewhat of a factor in that big or small. It's ironic that this answer comes from someone whose personality has a bigger factor in making fans and haters than probably any other SC2-player in the world.

I'm so hoping Idra gets cheesed out the hardest way possible by Cruncher.
This Interview does make him such unfriendly, i would say, MCs was less arrogant.
Not respecting your opponent can be funny, but not respecting all the people who watch Starcraft not only to see mass strategy is under the line.

Haha you are reaaaally reaching there just to come up with another reason to dislike him. He simply stated how he thinks things ought be, not how they are and there was nothing disrespectful about that. This is of course even assuming he was being serious and rather just didn't play his role.

Unlike MC, idra never says (e: at least recently) he is the best or anything. You can solely blame Cruncher for idra's perception of him as he has clearly always gone for cheese whenever they've played on ladder and indeed even at justin tv invitational.

The Slaughterer

This is the case of legendary Street Fighter player Thomas Osaki. I did not actually play with Thomas during his heyday, but I have since met him and I hope he forgives any misrepresentation of his conduct during his glory years.

In his day, Thomas Osaki dominated the game of Street Fighter in Northern California. His reputation for “playing to win” was quite extreme. They say he never really engaged in “casual play,” but rather always played his hardest, as if every game had something on the line or was a serious tournament. They say he played this way regardless of his opponent, even if his opponent were a nine-year-old girl with no skill at the game. He would “stutter step, throw” her like all the rest (a particularly “cheap” tactic). Did he have no compassion at all? Was he just a jerk? I like to think of Thomas (or his legend, in case it happens not to be true) not as mean player, but as an inspiring player. He set a bar of excellence. In his path of self-improvement, he was not willing to compromise, to embrace mediocrity, or to give less than his all at any time. His peers had the extraordinary opportunity to experience brilliant play whenever he was near, not just at rare moments in a tournament.

And what of the nine-year-old girl? Perhaps she had no business playing in the first place. From Thomas’s view, getting her off the machine allowed him to face the opponents he “should” be facing anyway.

From David Sirlin's playing to win. This is IdrA. And it's why I love him. I know what it's like to be passionate about something, to throw your heart into completely. I know how it can be to lose to chance, luck or abuse and so I understand the 'IdrA rage'. It's like MC, but to a lesser extent; IdrA can say these things because he has the skills to back them up. He is that good.

What's interesting is that IdrA speaks relatively well of Mondragon in this one, I remember in TSL2 he made this ridiculous statement that Mondi doesn't have any talent. I like the development, but I don't see how IdrA could have changed his mind in between TSL2 and today based on gaming perfomance as Mondi pretty much hasn't played too much in this time, so IdrA was just shit-talking Mondi

Q: Are you confident you can beat him? Do you expect him to do any risky strategies against you?

Yes, he's going to 4 gate all-in both games unless he decides to be clever and make voidrays or DTs.

Hehe, now this is how you sound confident in an interview, not like MC (he sounds like overcompensating, even though he IS very good, he shouldn't need it)

Poor cruncher though.

Lol haypro pinpoints a great fact:
"Q: Which matches (other than your own) are you interested in? Why? Who do you believe will win?

I'm looking forward to Morrow vs Jinro, best Swede outside of Korea vs best Swede in Korea. Idra vs Cruncher is supposed to be a really good match, and of course the grudge match between Ret and Naniwa."

Sweden fucking has playerS in Korea.

Kas vs Haypro will be the match of the underrated. In my opinion Kas is more underrated, because he is a top 3 foreigner terran and some Americans still don't know who he is. He also has to play his (by far) weakest matchup, so I will root for him.

Everyone seems to be too caught up in this manner non-sense.
Idra isn't being disrespectful to Cruncher, he is using psychological War-fare.
If he demoralizes his opponent beforehand it leaves leeway for mistakes on Cruncher.

I laughed so hard at idra's answers. I'm not really sure what it is, but the guy cracks me up. Hes my favorite for the tournament after Ret tho.

I don't think idras interview is bm or anything, he just says what he thinks without over- or underrating himself or others. I like his interview, I'd rather have somebody just speak his mind than just giving default comments. "I'm really happy to participate, my opponent is a very strong player but i'm confident that I am going to win if i prepare and work hard enough blablabla"

Yes, he's going to 4 gate all-in both games unless he decides to be clever and make voidrays or DTs.

Personality should be irrelevant. This is a computer game tournament, not a dating show.

Ahhh, IdrA amuses me. I like his confidence. I see him really doing well in TSL3. I haven't kept track of his games since the last GSL he was in, but the only person that seemed to be able to stop him that tournament was Jinro. You could tell he was playing the best SC2 he's played, during that GSL. It's just a shame they had to play against eachother. Anyways, go IdrA! Go Ret!

I wouldn't call myself a fan of anyone, but I support idra because and only because of his playstyle. It wouldn't matter for me if he's a jerk or a very nice guy that brings everyone cookies at lan.
So that makes your statement pretty void.

IdrA just says what he thinks.
Although I don't think he's right to think of it as a walkover- 4 gate is pretty strong!

Cruncher has about 40apm. He has absolutely no chance past the 10 minute mark.
We saw in the TL-Open all he has is well-executed rushes.
Cruncher definitely can't win TSL3 BUT he could beat IdrA.

No, I don't like IdrA and thats why I cheer for Cruncher. And I don't like Idra because he is really bm and insulting other players which is unprofessional to me and really bad for e-sports. I really do hope Idra crushes Cruncher, if only because after saying, "I'm approaching this match as though it will be a walkover," him losing would be painful to watch. Also, even though Toss is my main race, I love Idra.

My only concern is that I feel like Idra is at kind of a low spot professionally, mostly having to do with how disenfranchised he seems with the state of the game.

Classic IdrA answers. Though he really needs to understand 'personality' is synonymous with 'playing style' in this interview. I hope he wins the whole thing though - I want it to be a non-Korean and I think that might mean IdrA, that or he's out 2-0 to 4 gate in the first round, guess we'll have to wait and see.

based on what idra said (assuming cruncher will here about it), i would think that idra wants cruncher to focus on 4gate. idra is sort of calling out cruncher, and we will have to see if cruncher calls idra's bluff. what would be really sexy is if cruncher does the fake 4gate like MC and many other toss do--wait until last second to cancel nexus and then warp in stalkers. and attack. or 4gate with blink.

i'm sure idra is thinking about all of this and will probably have some very conservative scouting patterns and overlord sacs.

Q: If you had to introduce yourself to our fans who never met you, how would you describe yourself? Write a few sentences about your personality.

Personality should be irrelevant. This is a computer game tournament, not a dating show.

Haha that's the best part right there.

I hope Cruncher wipes the floor with Idra for being so cocky. He really isn't even going to practice and he only expects all-ins? Idra deserves to lose.

The ironic thing is that Idra claims personality is irrelevant, yet he completely plays up the Cruncher bashing knowing that's half the reason he's so famous. If anyone thinks it's only because of Idra's skill, take a look at any page in the fan thread, it's all quotes of Idra calling people retards and bashing on other players. Personality is definitely relevant.

Idra is not BM as much as people think. If he does BM for example, after he gets rushed by some silly timing attack, his bm is justified. He says what he thinks and normally what he thinks is true. People just don't like the truth.

I hope Idra smashes the tournament. For how good he is, he should be winning a lot more.

I hope despite what IdrA says in his interview he IS taking Cruncher seriously. It would be really disappointing of he went out so early, to cheese or 2 base timing attacks or whatever... but it's really funny how riled up he's gotten people who wouldn't be emotionally invested in the match if they hadn't read the interview.

I find it incredibly naive.

Of course personality is relevant. The fact that so many people are gushing all over this statement is a testament to that, if nothing else.

Tournaments are mostly funded by sponsors. Players like IdrA can dedicate their time to play games full time because of sponsors. Sponsors are willing to fund tournaments and support players because they want to advertise to people, and do you know a big reason why people tune in to watch their "favorite" player? Yep, personality.

Again, IdrA is the poster child for personality in gaming. He wouldn't have nearly as many fans if not for his personality, and less fans = less sponsorships. Not sure how he couldn't understand that.

I think he answered this question the best out of any of the interviews thus far. What better way to answer then to actually display your personality in your response? Much more entertaining and fun to read then the 'Hey I'm American, I practice hard and try to win.'

IdrA, and many other players (Destiy, iNcontrol, Day9), know that part the reason they're so popular is because of their personality. Why wouldn't he play that up? His answer was perfect in my opinion.
You are, what you do, when it counts.

Ironically, personality is a major part of what has given Idra his "fame" in the Starcraft community. He would be given a fraction of the attention he receives now if he was a generic, neutral character that a lot of SC gamers are. He raises controversy and people love that. Ironically again his statement about personality is an expression of his personality and again a huge reason why he is popular.

Personality is good in all walks of competition. It builds excitement around match ups, it builds up a fan base around that player, and ultimately is good for E-Sports in the west. People like seeing players with unique and large personalities. If ALL players were boring and mundane there would be less of a following for the competitive scene, and would definitely result in less of a draw for newcomers to the scene, and ultimately stunt the growth of Starcraft. To a lot of people it's not just the game itself, its everything else that comes with it.

I know this might not be the best analogy for an average TL'er to relate to, but I think it's rather appropriate. MMA applies this concept really well. Fighters often have big, outgoing personalities, and promotions such as the UFC really take advantage of that. They put a lot of emphasis on bringing out these personalities through pre-fight and post-fight video interviews that result in people caring for the fights and competitors even more so.

Another example, during the last State of the Game, Tyler called MC out on his play style, and followed with stating that he wanted to meet MC in TSL3 and beat him. In stating this, he's effectively started to build hype around the idea this match up. In saying this, he is essentially making people WANT this match up and if it were to happen, there would be much more appeal to it. I for one, hate PvP; but I would be more than happy to see this specific match up because there is now some background to it; and it happened because a player was willing to express some personality towards the idea.

It's naive to say personality isn't important. Personality creates attention on someone, and with that, more viewers, sponsors and overall growth of the game we all love.

Seriously? Everyone else is mannered and answered all the same questions that were asked of them, but Idra feels like he needs to show that hes still a dick or something? Grow up bro, you could have answered the questions the same as everyone else and no one would have thought you were a nicer person than you are.

Your wrong, I'm a fan of Idra because of his playing ability. He is just a beast. Insane macro, great micro, fairly high apm for a foreigner as well.

SKILL MATTERS BRAH! This isn't the WWE! And idra is no jobber-He is a competent SC pro and has as much of a shot as anyone at winning the whole thing imo.

edit: players like Idra help bring SC2 up to the caliber and greatness that was BW, another reason I'm a fan. Taking it late game where the highest potential of human multitasking and decision making is put on display. GOOD GAMES, not coin flips. Luck is for donkeys.

Cruncher interview was rather lackluster and disappointing after reading Idra's interview. He gave the most generic answers possible. It really adds so much more to the games when the players actually allow the spectators to get a glimpse of their personality and mind set rather then being boring and bland. Oh well, at least Idra gave a highly entertaining interview.

I'm an Idra fan, but It think he may have already lost, because he's not saying anything about TSL in public. Check his twitter, he downplays TSL3 on it.

Idra is my favorite sc2 player because of skill alone. I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything, but it was all the hype about his hardcore macro oriented playstyle that really got me enjoying his gameplay, not something about his personality. (I actually find his bm somewhat of a put off).

Release the Gracken!!

I really wish that these tourneys could be live similar to what we saw on King of the Beta tournament(that IdrA won).

I still remember that moment...IdrA steamrolls his enemy...and then you see the camera pan to IdrA's face. His eyes flicker off the screen, his head tilts just slightly - no smile, not even any hint of a grin - and just gives a slight "yeah, easy win" expression.

He doesn't have to whoop, holler or make a crazy scene of himself. Just calm, cool, unemotional, expressionless win posture. That's awesome.

MC is very high on himself whereas IdrA is very low on average players. In other words IdrA comes off as blunt and troll-ish while MC sounds arrogant

That was when jtv invitational was going on at the same time as the first day of tsl 3. Idra beat cruncher that day but lost to 2 others. So who knows how his game went. Though I must say Idra is practicing with axslav alot recently so I'd expect some good results on sunday.

Did you ever think that Idra understands this whole concept and was clearly just saying that because that is apart of his image? Thus by saying what he did only further fuels his personality and makes even more people fall in love with him.

Idra actually surprised me with his answers. I'm a big fan of Idra mainly for his playstyle and entertainment value, but I always respected him for having a good enough filter to keep interviews professional. However his, and some other's interviews for TSL have been kind of lackluster.

In their defense maybe its because it is a pre-game interview so they may have reserves about expanding too much on their thoughts going into the games.

Q: If you had to introduce yourself to our fans who never met you, how would you describe yourself? Write a few sentences about your personality.

Personality should be irrelevant. This is a computer game tournament, not a dating show.

LET THE TRASH TALK BEGIN!!! IDRA vs CRUNCHER = AWESOME GAMES!!! also I love how HayprO doesn't answet completley the questions, like
Q: Your first round opponent is Empire.Kas, who is currently the #1 ranked TLPD European player. What are your thoughts about him as a player?

HayprO: Kas seems to be a really good Terran player.

Like saying "yeah I'll kick this dude's ass"
Great matches coming up this weekend!!!
With an average game length of 7m36s over his 6 games in GSL3, this is a no-brainer. BitByBit pulls more SCVs than yo momma at a club on Mar Sara. ♞

Sorry to say to cruncher who said he wants to prove himself that he can go far, but if you all in cheese IdrA every game you are proving exactly the opposite so I hope you intend on showing off solid mechanics. I hope HayprO can come out on top against Kas, but I think Kas will 2-0 him. Thanks for the interviews TL great work and can't wait for the matches! Thanks to little app factory for sponsoring

Q: Are you confident you can beat him? Do you expect him to do any risky strategies against you?

Yes, he's going to 4 gate all-in both games unless he decides to be clever and make voidrays or DTs.

I believe it 100 percent.

Can't wait to watch these matches!

Thanks

It's called "love to hate." They're the villains you enjoy watching do dastardly deeds because hating how evil they are just feels so good.

I don't know if I'd put Idra in that category - he just comes off as a bit immature in my view - but I can see how some folks might.

Cruncher faced Idra in the Justin.tv Invitational #2 in the loser's bracket so if anyone wants a preview of tomorrow check these games out:

Game 1 / Game 2
Game 2
Game 3

Interesting facts about this match up:

It was the only game Idra wouldn't let us cast
Idra didn't post the replays correctly and 1 was actually a duplicate
Idra only streamed and vod'd this match up

Just some food for thought.

Yeah, he's pretty dumb. He thinks corruptors/roaches/hydras on tier 2 is a good unit composition against toss. Amazing to see such a prolific pro gamer play like an absolute newbie and get hard countered.

Mutas counter void rays

vs that unit comp (stalkers/collusus/VRs)
you would build mutas/lings/corruptors

instead Idra decides to build roaches (with no zealots out on the field) Hydras (with no mass gateway units) and corruptors (hard countered by VRs - the bulk of his army)

absolutely terrible and retarded play.

I dont think FFs are imbalanced usually, but being able to just disable 5 roaches like that should be a bug and not be allowed, its just not what forcefields are meant for ... Something should prevent you from getting 2+ units bunched up in such a small area

GGs otherwise, very fun to watch

we all know toss will be nerfed soon, so it doesnt even matter that he lost. Blizzard needs to get rid of warp in - pylons / or FF. you can't have both.

Toss doesn't need to be nerfed. You just have to learn how to play against them Removing warp gates or FF is really stupid. That's really not gonna happen This is not beta man... Removing FF means that sentries would be useless and removing warp gates would mean that toss would be useless

Idra played like a nub. 2 tier vs 3 tier G1 then seeing 5 gate and drone drone drone G3. GG Cruncher. Good out BMing Idra too.

I wasn't able to watch the cast with DJ Wheat and Day[9]. Will the game, or a VOD, be posted?

I hear Brood Lords and Ultralisks are really good against 15 void rays.

Anyone want to confirm this or me?

I believe you need to research jump for the Ultras before engaging the VRs, but basically yeah that is why Zerg must get to tier 3 to take on the VR/Collossus death ball.
I'm not bad at Starcraft; I just think winning's rude.

Hahaha yeah, that's exactly the point, funny how Day9 "tried" to see a mistake in IdrA's play/army composition: there was none. He got T3 just to get 3/3 upgrade... The only mistake I could see was in battle: not focussing the colossi with his corruptor. You need to focus them then take the voidray/stalker with waves of hydras.

Idra's second game was one of the most dominant thus far in the tournament. You could see in that game he was on another level than Cruncher... and I think over the course of several more games, Idra would be on top. But of course, Cruncher came out with the win. Idra should have had a twee bit larger an army and not attempted the drop. GG Cruncher.

Q: Your first round opponent is a relatively unknown player - Cruncher. What are your thoughts about him?

I'm approaching the match as if it were a walkover.

Q: Are you confident you can beat him? Do you expect him to do any risky strategies against you?

Yes, he's going to 4 gate all-in both games unless he decides to be clever and make voidrays or DTs

roflcopters.

just wondering when grack will stop being so overwhelmingly outwardly overconfident and prepare for his matches evenly.

I guess day[9] was trolling too in game commentary as he was flabbergasted by play of IdrA. Sorry no trolling, listen again it's up @teamliquids youtube, mistakes were made and price was paid.

IdrA got owned, always makes one a happy face. I really liked Mondragon's play, he showed why was he always one of the bests at Brood war.

First of all a message to the idrA haters. Why do you care sooo much about idrA saying gg? I don't gg almost at all and I bet you don't either, let's stop the hypocrisy here please. idrA does NOT i repeat does NOT post his replays, so most of his games you will see rage/bm/hate whatever you might call it which is perfectly NORMAL in starcraft 2 games. You people care too much.
Now onto Cruncher. In the games idrA would top him 50 supply on, so Cruncher has no right to say "he's a bad player" when he obviously passed him almost everything. Cruncher is just some WC guy that came out of nowhere thinking that cheesing and staying inside his base until he reaches 200/200 is skill and even brags about it. Sorry, even a little kid can do that deathball build and go against 7 bases and win. Pressing F isn't a skill either.
I don't hate or love idrA but I find it ridiculous how on game 1 that can happen. I think we need to reevaluate some balance here and Cruncher needs to man the hell up before calling someone bad when in game 2 he got destroyed from trying to do the same thing in game 1.

I don't care if you don't say gg, you aren't a progamer. Do soccer players shake hands and acknowledge each other after a match? yup. football? yup. If starcraft is an esport, why make it any different?

Why not make it different? Why do we need to aspire to some other sport to make this one "real"? I personally feel it gives a lot to the scene when a player just leaves the match and dont say gg. In this sport, we dont get to see players faces so often, so just leaving without saying gg, tells us viewers that something emotional is going on, and we can discuss/laugh about it.

Not saying gg brings something to sc2. We need to have some drama, some emotions. Do you know we have websites that shows us all the BM?

Oh, one last thing, Idra is super manner, super mature where it counts, live interviews. He is such a nice guy when you get to hear him talk.

Are you Huk's bodyguard or something? Why do you care so much. seriously why do you care? this isn't a friendship meeting it's a game. idrA is the way he is. complaining about him or crying about how much you hate him isn't going to make him change. accept it and move on.
