I am actually more surprised at how lenient the mods are being in those threads. I guess they are giving a bit of leeway for people who are angry about it.

Doubt it. Usually when someone gets caught breaking the law they stop. If the law being broken is using someone else's property (logo) as your own, you'd stop using it at get your own if/when you get busted.

The original thread was either deleted or permissions were restricted. The funny photoshopping I did is still here though. 
The reason I suspect something is that the image they used scaled up perfectly on their banner thingy, which means they have a vector image of the icon. Everyplace I've seen the TL icon though, it's in a rasterized format. There has to be a source vector image that the graphics people have access to, but they never use it on final products, as least not that I've ever seen. Either they meticulously recreated the TL icon in vector format (in which case why not just create your own icon?), or someone gave them a copy of it.

It's not a particularly complicated image. I fiddle around with the size quite often of my rasterized image when I'm making eve videos, for instance.
