As you may have noticed already, we recently expanded the blogs section on the sidebar to include featured blogs. These blog authors are a combination of high star ratings and notable forum personalities who have been active recently. Hopefully this new section will allow us to showcase their content in a more visible way.

Check out the featured blog section in the left sidebar, or click here for the full list.

I have a question, does the ranking take into account percentages or is it just everyone with 5 stars is at the top with no specific order and then the people with 4.5 stars are then underneath with no specific order?
I get it.

Nice addition, but basing it on high star ratings seems flawed. Currently I've seen few ratings for the views/comments I have in blogs, which are a much better indicator of quality. It creates an unfavourable post-to-reward ratio too, for example If someone makes their first blog and gets a single 5 star rating that's a 5 star average over all their work, currently a 5 star rating would be a +0.046 in my average (with favourable rounding). Also of course since this works on average across blogs it's not featured blogs but featured users who make blogs, which I suppose is what you are going for highlight notable forum personalities. It is a good idea, just from the perspective of someone who works with ratings the way you are featuring things seems sub-optimal.

Which is prioritized, ranking or read/reply count? Like would someone really popular with 4.5 stars be above someone less will known with 5?

Nothing to do with the blogs direct but I just noticed a problem when I tried to customize my sidebar:
I can´t move the section blocks, the cross appears when hovering over a block but I can´t click it or it is like a normal cursor and it marks the text.
Didn´t want to make a new thread in feedback about it, perhaps somebody can tell me if I do something wrong or a small error accured.

To the best of my understand only the initial set of featured blogs were picked based off of ratings. Future additions won't necessarily be based off of rating.

Clicking 'Featured Blogs' takes you to the list, which is based on ratings, while the sidebar lists recent blogs of high-rated users. I'll be favouring the curated Spotlight, as long as it still covers blogs, to provide the more interesting recent blogs.

Edit: that sounds more negative than it should, rather I'm more interested in interesting blogs of the moment than featured users.

The Featured Blogs list does indeed take you to a list, which is sorted by ratings rather than defined by ratings. Blogs are manually added to the featured blogs list and the initial set of blogs were based on the top rated blogs at the time (and were then processed).

I used to play another game that had a community forum like TL. They had a special section for the old boys club in which the rest of us couldn't post. I recommend this for TL, because then you won't have to put up with the rest of us ordinary people, and also we will be free from being rated/judged/overly moderated.

I look forward to seeing improvements, in its current state sorting by ratings will effectively define blogs by rating, people rarely look at the second page of results. As I say implicit feedback such as views and comments is usually more telling of interest, and should be considered when you make changes

It's called the Broodwar section.

On a more serious note, I'd suggest you post this on Website Feedback if you so wish. .

I really dislike it, I think it's an unecessary step in the "upvote direction". Plus it starts to make the left sidebar way too long (and I have a lot of hidden sections).
That being said, I can work around this which is pretty nice.

Myself from the Website Fedback now closed thread.
Just wanted to ask if it'd be possible to customize blogs in the "customize sidebar" options ?

I don't really think this helps anyone. I read far more great "one-off" blogs than I do from people who blog all the time. And the number of views/replies in the thread is a good indicator of a popular blog.

So when I click on the big section header that says: "Blogs" will I still be seeing all the blogs in order of last post?

looking through the entire featured blog list im kinda worried. most of the bloggers there are famous people who have blogged once or twice total and gotten 5 stars (sometimes purely on their name). it seems like the amount of 'content' in the featured blogging section wont exactly be very big even with so many names.

Actually on second thought, I'm not sure how I feel about featured blogs. May run into the issue of the rest of the blogs not being read because people just want to read "Featured" blogs.

Actually nvm, people only read blogs to see girl blogs.

Will featured bloggers keep their featured status indefinitely? Of course, any features blogger who just makes a total ass of themselves ought to have that privilege revoked, but are there other circumstances in which featured status will be removed? If there is, I hope it's not by blog ranking, because malicious people could use 1-star blog bombing as a really effective tool of getting anyone off the list.

What criteria do you use when judging the de-featuring of a given blogger?

Personally I'd prefer if clicking featured blogs showed the most recent individual blog posts as the normal blog section does. I realize you can click sort by most recent entry, but being able to read the title to decide if its something you want to click on is important to me. Doubt I'll use the feature much in its current state.

Could the standard blog section be programmed in a way that blogs which are visible in the featured section are not appearing again, making space for more non-featured blogs?

I'd tend to agree. He's a smart kid.

But on the actual system though, I think i'd like it if the Blogs that are listed in the featured section, are also not listed in the normal section.

Like NonY's most recent blog, it's in the featured and the non-featured section, which seems unnecessary, as it could potentially also take away space from normal blogs that would want to be "promoted" by being listed in the most recent section. Maybe this concern has already been answered and I just missed something :o

really lame. i dislike this cause i cant remove the featured blogs from the sidebar. Its redundant to have the blogs reappear in the normal blog section of the sidebar.

I approve of this, sometimes its such a chore to dig through all of the ladder and haji blogs to find what people really read the blog section for.

Wait what, haji blogs are legitimately pretty good. It takes a few to get used to his writing style (otherwise it just reads as random verbiage), but they are very different from the rest and well-worth the read.

Need to step up my game and crank out more blogs!

Ah yes
Even though I don't oppose the idea myself, i too found it redundant, to have the featured blogs also appear in the 'unranked' blog section
Like with R1CH's how to capture meth in XSplit blog :F (hehe word cutoff)

Also
why not introduce yet another element to the equation, the equation of fun - blog ladder! Automatically feature top 100 blogs by rankings : D!
Should your blog score go down, blam, back to the regular ladder with ye!

I think it's a sweet idea.

As far as I am concerned, I only ever use the left sidebar to navigate the site, so as much as possible should be put there .

I'm sure it wouldn't be insanely huge problem, but what would stop someone trying to make top 100 from going through the top 100 bloggers and 1-starring all their posts to rank them down?

I agree it's redundant to have featured blogs also appear in the regular blogs section though.

While my post was written mostly tongue-in-cheek (we're not planning to take the blog ladder by storm with SirJolt at all, pssh), you raise a valid point

Most blogs in the top100 though, apart from a select few, have enough ratings to not be phased or influenced at all by random 1-voters (who are the bane of every system with hit&run voting capabilities).
Then again, that could possibly weed out those one-hit bloggers (which necessarily isn't a problem) and their low amount of entries/reputation/fanbase.
Hmm

Food for thought for the inception of the TL Grandmaster Blog League though

This is a great idea but when someone (example Tyler) makes a blog his appears 2x in the featured and in the regular blogs, is there is a way could you guys make people who are featured go straight to the featured section so that way they don't take up space in reg blogs allowing for more. Sorry if i worded that oddly

To the best of my understand only the initial set of featured blogs were picked based off of ratings. Future additions won't necessarily be based off of rating.

Oh, good :D Cus sometimes you may make a blog entry where it's just a question like some of mine, and I wouldn't want that to now weigh down my rating forever.

Yeah, this is true. I literally have seen someone go through and mark all my blogs a 1, not sure why. Maybe they actually hated them, but it just seemed shiesty. I am not that concerned, but I think that the star ratings are far too open to trolls. =)

Overall, I like the section and think it is a great idea. Thanks guys!

It's nice, so it'll be easier for blogs that are not front page feature material, but still good, to be a bit more visible! Good idea.

However, reading through the featured ones right now, I have the feeling that some ended up there because the blogger is a big name rather than the blog actually being very good. What I liked with the front page feature is that a first poster has as big of a chance to get there as a 15k posts veteran, as long as the content is the same. Maybe it's just at startup that it is like this. Just hoping the featured blogs wont be an internal club for the veterans only.

I've always thought they should have it so either the general reader or the blogger can see who rated the post and what rating they gave.

Hey i have a small suggestion for the tl.net featured blogs section. When i click the featured blogs link it shows me a list of the featured blogs. However, none of the topics are listed, just the bloggers. I think tl.net would benefit from having the titles of the blogs listed as well. Well actually i'm not so sure how tl.net could benefit as an organization from this but, it would make way easier to figure out what these blogs are about.
