Position: Starcraft 2 Writer (unpaid)
Hiring Period: Indefinite Number of Positions: Undetermined
Description
Have you read the front page lately? And I don't mean simply glancing at it before you go to click on one of the forums (those who have their landing pages set at /forum need not apply), I mean actually clicking on the articles and reading through them.
Maybe you really like some of our stuff, and some of it perhaps not as much. Same with us, mostly. Though we pride ourselves on our news, we're always trying to make it better. That's where you (might) come in.
We're looking for new SC II writers to cover the e-Sports scene. There's a ton of tournaments with a ton of games lately, and we're feeling rather undermanned. We're gonna need new writers to cover all of the major tournaments, cover them well, and do it in a TIMELY manner.
What kind of stuff do we need written?
Well first, there's the basic stuff. Short match reports, upcoming match previews, player profiles, etc. It's not the most interesting stuff in the world for most writers, but it's stuff that's gotta get done. We like to get those kinda things over with as efficiently as we can, so we can move onto cooler stuff.
Here's something that might interest those of you who cut their teeth with SC II: Starcraft 1 still has a deeper, richer scene. Don't believe me? Read any of the recent Proleague or MSL news posts, or check out the the Brood War forums. Sure, it may look like a bunch of obsessive fanboy-ism at first, but that's precisely the kind of interest and passion that drove Brood War on for over ten years.
Starcraft II is a younger game for sure, so there's not as much history to draw from. But even so, there are definitely some interesting characters, bitter rivalries, e-Sports drama and just tons of awesome stories waiting to be told. The intertwined fates of MKP vs MVP. The times and trials of NASL. Multiple, competing leagues worldwide. ThorZain vs MC becoming THE new standard for entertaining e-Sports matches.
These are things that need to be explored, analyzed, and written about, in only the way a truly passionate fan can. If you can do that, well, then we'll give the podium to you.
In short, we want writers, who will be asked to perform a simple task: Watch a league, tell us what happened, and then tell us why it was interesting.
Application process
Send an application containing the following to k.woo@teamliquid.net (WaxAngel)
- Your TeamLiquid ID and online messenger contact information (MSN, AIM, Gchat, etc).
- Three writing samples on the topic of SC II e-Sports. No minimum or maximum length on these, just be reasonable. Topics need only be vaguely related to e-Sports if they are interesting enough. Additional samples after the third will be ignored.
- The league or tournament you would prefer to cover.
- That is all. Do not send any resumes or things that were not asked for. For now, all we want to see is your writing.
* This position is unpaid ** Subscriptions will be provided for writers covering pay-to-watch leagues.

Cool stuff. TL's writing staff is so baller
|
I was wondering when the position may be closed to applications? Or will it be open until you have found what you are looking for?
|
I wish I had the free time to write. Would love to contribute. But alas, having a GF, Working Full time, Playing Tennis, and Starcraft on a daily basis leaves me with barely enough time to sleep lol.
Good luck finding people. I love reading what the TL writers have to say. They are always quality articles, and very well written.
|
I was hoping that cloning technology was far enough to produce perfect Hot_Bid clones, so they could write hundreds of articles each day.
Just as TLO said on TLAttack (at least how I remeber it ): 'I think it's just a good advice in general: to live your life always asking yourself 'What would Hot_bid do?' '
Anyways, looking forward to some cool stuff coming up

Open for an indefinite amount of time, until we are pleased with what we have. Pretty much what you said :o
|
ill apply to this, do the writing samples have to have been published somewhere or can we mock them up as and when in privacy?
|
I've been thinking of applying for this for a while now. I could crank out some sick articles.

I don't care where or what format they're in as long as I can read them.

Is there going to be some kind of salary?
|
For the writing samples, would something like a battle report or some sort of game summary suffice? Or are you looking for more prose-y stuff?

Hiring implies a salary, so might want to change the title.

Hiring implies employment, which is what they're doing. Employment doesn't necessarily have salaries; just expectations, standards and work ethics.
(In reality, you work for compensation, the compensation doesn't have to be financial).
Edit: Oh and I'd be interested, but I don't feel I am adequate. Nonetheless, I remember reading about hiring more writers previously by another staff member. Was that request ever fulfilled or is this a continuation?

why you want this position: 1) millions of ESPORTS dollars 2) fame and glory 3) practice and show off your writing skills for EPEEN points 4) put it on your resume for that job writing editorials for NYT and/or the Enquirer

in terms of topics for writing samples, I really don't care as long as it is loosely related to e-sports in some way.
Just send in stuff you think you wrote well, and that should be fine :O

I've been on TL for a long, long time.. Might have to look into this. ^^

I'll put in my effort with this weeks NASL's
My grammer and spelling is trash but I do think I will enjoy writing a bit if nothing else.

There is no confusion, just a raging debate over something extraordinarily trivial. Do your parents know you're argumentative?
Quoting dictionaries implies that you do not understand the word, thus should not have posted in the first place because you in fact did not understand the word in the first place.
edit: forgot about the actual topic of thread. Wish I had the free time to try this, GL to anyone who applies.
|
Can the topics that you send already be reported but put on ur own words?
|
cool! looking to try applying!!!!
|
A sign that SCII is expanding at a health rate! I love all the reports people write here, I hope some very talented people apply for this. Sadly, my major is math, not english. =P
|
How long are the turnaround times? Do we have 24 hours to get the analysis in after the event? or does it need to be quicker than that? If deadlines are reasonable, and can work around a 9-5, I would gladly volunteer.
|
Something I would love to do, but not sure my English writing ability would be up to par, I have a lot of spare time so I shall give it a shot :D

Oh, this is going to be baller. I'm definitely going to apply for this tonight
Edit: How do you want it formatted? HTML? BBcode? Just text, thank you?

Quoting dictionaries implies that you do not understand the word, thus should not have posted in the first place because you in fact did not understand the word in the first place. It is clear that several people came to this thread thinking that TL was hiring (in the dictionary sense of the word) writers. Changing the word to "recruiting" would probably save us this argument as well those personal attacks.
Alternatively, if the usage of the word is intentional in an effort to grab the attention of more readers, the "unpaid" nature of the position could be specified in the first paragraphe. This way you still get the thread views and you avoid most of the confusion.
Note: I will not read this thread any further to avoid getting baited into a pointless argument.

Damn... I got an offer to write for mym but I ignored it, and now this is so tempting. I love to write, and I can do it damn well if I try, but SC2 just doesn't inspire me as much as other topics...
|
Oh very exciting indeed, should be awesome to see some new blood on the TL writing team. Best of luck to those applying.

I demand esports bucks or so help me i will write for tl. Also people think of connotative meanings of hire they inferred compensation although in general any way of wording it infers that you get something, be it if you used position, openings et al.

Does every kind of this 3 writing samples are full articles of "x" (the full article counts as 1) thing or just lets say a NASL match up preview (or which every preview counts as 1)??

I've been doing some translations to PT-BR from various articles, too bad it's not a translator you need =P

Can the articles be made up? Such as IdrA vs Jaedong (not that absurd that is, just an example) Preview? It helps show free writing skills a bit more.

God damn I'm heading out tomorrow for a few days and I don't think I can whip out any SC2/esports related writing. Can I send you three writing samples about topics like parastate industry in Mexico and Brazil or something, I promise you my writing skills transfer over to esports related stuff ^.^

to everyone: stop second guessing yourself and just send in stuff about starcraft that you enjoyed writing the most

Sounds like an awesome gig, and may look good on the resume for those looking to go into some sort of journalism field.
I'm a good writer, and would definitely apply, but unfortunately I need to get paid this summer and probably won't have the time
|
I would do it but I'm not that good of a writer Good luck to all that apply!
|
I'd assume not, but just to be clarify: The evaluation is ONLY on writing, so no bonus points for making your battle reports look nice with screenshots/banners?
|
im not sure i can think of 3 samples that are sufficiently different from each other, tbh i just like the idea of doing some of the recaps that tl writers do, they always seem so informative, a real good read
|
Good luck to all that apply!
|
I'm going to apply, as I love TL and want to give back to the community, but don't have that much time! How much would I be expected to write for the community if I were to apply and be accepted? I couldn't do battle reports, as I almost never have time to watch VODs, but have a lot of knowledge about new players and rivalries, as well as know stats on almost all the names in the biz!
I would be willing to write 2-3 articles a month, evenly spaced with a good week or so or forewarning about anything player-related!
|
Does TL have a professional writing team or are all the writers volunteers?
|
Best of luck to those who apply. If I did writing on esports, I'd apply. If I just wrote some random esports articles could I apply?
|
I would apply if i wasnt already doing this for another website, maybe one day! :D hope TL gets some great new writers!
|
Omg subscriptions! YES
Hm, how often would you have to write? If there's at least a couple writers, there is usually may be an average of 4 articles a week, excluding things like interviews etc. I'm definitely interested but if it's too much I may not be able to do it because of school and stuff
|
I've inquired about something like this in the past, definitely going to apply now that there seems to be a demand for writers. Should have my app in tonight, crossing my fingers ^^ Edit: All done, that feels good :D
|
On May 03 2011 09:16 KiLL_ORdeR wrote:I'm a good writer, and would definitely apply, but unfortunately I need to get paid this summer and probably won't have the time
THIS. I would apply 100% if there was any reasonable payment in 'money' - besides the 10 million E-Sports dollars or hugs from <enter fav TL member here>. I love TL and the community - and watch literally all GSL matches and any other (NASL, etc) matches I can. However, I do like to put peanut-butter on my bread; no payment doesn't help with that, unfortunately.
|
Can't wait to read some more awesome SC2 articles in the future. I hope the new guys will deliver, since the bw writers have set the bar quite high
Are we going to have an SC2 Power Rank(tm) soon??
|
I was thrown off by the "Hiring" part xD. I'm sure there are a lot of fantastic writers out there who would be willing to do this for free though. I would have loved to help out but since I already run my own site it would be hard to make time for both O_o
|
There is nothing, I repeat absolutely nothing more intriguing to me than an opportunity to actually give colour to to a sport with a massive and yet still growing pallet, unfortunately the link i try to go to to apply keeps sending me right back to the team liquid homepage,I'm probably misunderstanding the entire navigation system aren't I,if so please excuse my technological ineptitude. Can someone please tell me how exactly to apply? I would be endlessly grateful.
|
My god im an idiot, its an email, please disregard the previous post.

How long the application process is going to last ? I plan on applying but i need some time to translate and rewrite old writings. Since english is not my native language and that i have a lot of urgent things going on i don't know if i'll be able to submit my application on time

this is why Plexa was such a huge loss anyway good luck to the people applying and I hope you can fill in the shoes of our beloved toss

Curious as to when the deadline to this is? I'm soon entering my finals week right now so I'd rather focus on that, but I'd love to apply once I'm done with my finals.
|
School is killing me, but what the hell I can make time for TL and ESPORTS. Sending in my app, it'd be great to work with Waxangel and co. <3
|
I wish my english would be good enough to take a position like this but truly I think it is not. I have both the interest and the time needed since I work nights in sweden with alot of spare time (and I am more or less always able to do things like this at work). Sadly, I asume that you should be a native english speaker for this to be written well enough for everyone to enjoy. I so admire everyone who take so much of their spare time to contribute to this community for to be completly frank, without those people TL would be so much less and without TL I myself woult most likely not have discovered the beauty of E-sports!
GL in finding writers!

Hiring? Shouldn't it be "recruiting" since you're not paying?
|
I probably don't even have to ask this, but i'm right in assuming all application papers will be posted for public humiliation and scrutiny right?
:7
(Seriously tho, GL to everybody doing this... i'm a terrible writer but the job would be fun since I keep pretty uptodate anyways)
|
I haven't been watching too many games lately, so I don't know if I'd be qualified to do something like this..
Hopefully I'll find the time to get StarCraft back into my schedule and then, if TL is still looking for help, I'll apply.
To anyone considering it: do it! If you have the time and the skill, this is a great way to get involved in the community!

No, I feel that recruiting is less formal a word and implies the recruiter is more desperate. Hiring has a more selective connotation imo. Also, you get the chance to contribute which is priceless.

I think I'll apply; while english isn't my strongest subject, I do love to share my opinion and vision of a game or a series. Question though, are the writers who are accepted going to be put into a sort of trial period? If so, what would the trial period judge and how long would it be approximately? Thanks in advance.
|
this website would be so cool if it was like mtg.com (a similar site for magic: the gathering), which has regular high-quality news and strategy articles each day. That website is run by well-paid, employees though, so it could be difficult to get it to that level of quality.
EDIT: the site is now http://www.wizards.com/Magic

Awesome!!
I actually was wanting to become a writer a while ago, but had no idea how to become one.
I'll see my schedule for this summer and most likely will apply this weekend (finals week now =\). I'm great friends with TrueRedemption and have met several other writers in person (such as motbob even though I'm sure he doesn't remember me when I found him at the Collegiate ESports Series event in Indy haha). I would love to be part of the writer team if I get accepted, these guys are awesome.
|
I wish my schedule allowed me to watch the games more promptly
One can't report something several days late--it's not a very good way to cover news.
|
I should try and write some stuff later. Since the first season of the IPL ended theres plenty to talk about.
|
What qualifies as a "sample"? I want to write a "foreigner special" for Huk. If I have an intro, and outro, and recaps of his two games, does that count as one sample?
Are you looking exclusively for "journalism" style recaps and such? Or just SC2/e-sports in general ("How to convince your dad to watch e-sports with you")?
Are all writings considered Serious Business?
|
What is the deadline on this?
|
Can I submit my erotic starcraft themed fan fiction?

This sounds really cool, maybe will give it a shot, as I am indeed a truly esports fan and are following many leagues most of them atleast and would love to do this. I think my writing skills isn't up to the same level as my passion for it though . Gl to every one who apply!

Well, I can speak/write and understand "fluently" and my forum posts might be decent but an entire article or a recap of a game would contain sooooo many errors its not even funny. And its such a huge difference in writing something somewhat professional compared to these <500 word posts =)

Guys, I sent in this submission. Tell me what you think. I've been writing for a while, but I'm rusty. Starting to get my voice back in the latest post: theSC2report
|
I had no idea how to write one, but i have always wanted to be able to contribute to this community, so i wrote three differently styled submissions on short notice and sent them in, i hope you guys think they are worthy. Number one: A battle report of Zenio vs Boxer, i would have added pictures, but you wanted to see my writing. Number two: An argument for how PvP is a thoroughly underated match up. Basically a hype post. Number three: The story of how my brother got into starcraft which i wrote from his perspective after he told me about it. The question i have now is will i get a reply? That is to say, whether or not it is decide that TL would like me to write for them, will i get an message telling me, and how long will the decision process take?
Thanks, Surili.

What a good first post! And I write that including no sarcasm and all the heartfelt mushy feelings implied. It's awesome that people sign-up to try and participate... rather than do it to flame or complain or contribute to the cholesterol clogging up the site.

Do you want a specific subject header for the email we send you? Also, are we allowed to use things we've already written? In particular, I created a thread on Teamliquid which talked ABOUT Esports in general, and I was wondering if I could use that.

It's completely unintentional, and kind of ridiculous that anyone would think this is a reasonable strategy for getting a good volunteer writer.
To be honest, it was very obvious that Teamliquid's goal in this matter was to fool a skilled writer into applying (expecting recompense), and hope to strongarm him into staying. Pretty despicable.
By the way, I apologize for the edit (if anyone saw it), I was posting pictures on a porn forum I frequent and mistakenly posted them here.

Waxangel, i feel like this is a situation when you get what you pay for. Why would you be up at 3:00 AM??? If you write about NASL / TSL / Dreamhack / MLG / ESL etc. or one of the weekly tournaments you will be perfectly able to watch them in your own timezone (depending naturally on what timezone you are in and what league you choose to write for). The only leagues you have to be up at 3:00 AM for are the Korean leagues but in SC2 those are only a (very) small part of what's going on.
|
I would love to try this, but have no idea what I could possibly write about. I'm also afraid that what I write will be terrible :\
|
If I worked just a little less, (I'm basically on a work / sleep schedule atm) I'd pay to be a TL writer. The writers here are all untouchable legends in my heart, and will remain so until the day I die. Gentlemen. You are fucking awesome.

The other half is because writers got an influx of really good new blood like yourself just as I was phased out. The newer models are so much better at it.

Are you looking exclusively for "journalism" style recaps and such? Or just SC2/e-sports in general ("How to convince your dad to watch e-sports with you")?
Are all writings considered Serious Business?
Yes, that counts as one sample. The pieces have to uphold some sort of journalistic standard, not something you'd write in SC2 General to draw discussion and/or your typical blog. While most are pretty 'srs bznz', writers often inject their POV or writing style to make it less formal and more personal.

No, technically you don't. We have deadlines and such for each writer to submit their portion of a write-up that are usually due 24-36 hours after the games have been played. If it is a cumulative write-up, then they are due usually later in the week, so make sure you pick the games that are played on earlier days of the competition !
On May 03 2011 21:42 Count9 wrote: So, before everyone signs up, can someone describe what it's like to work as a writer for TL?
You choose/get assigned to league games that you do a battle report for. That's mostly it for recaps. If there is any piece of creative writing or some sort of written contribution that you find fitting for the site, you can also post it and get feedback from other staff members.
On May 04 2011 10:38 xphantomx wrote: if we write something having research involved do we need a works cited section..?
Not necessarily. A lot of the write-ups contain facts and such that can be datamined (to various difficulties), so we/the editors mostly hold you accountable for your words. If you repeatedly claim false information, then we'll harass you for your sources. (and punish you)

I've done some journalism before for various sites, like SK Gaming, nihilum and Curse so this intrigues me a bit and I'll definitely send something your way some time this week. I've been wanting to get more involved in the community for a while now, and I feel this is a great way to get my feet in the door in the SC2 community.

In short, we want writers, who will be asked to perform a simple task: Watch a league, tell us what happened, and then tell us why it was interesting.
Ooh, I'm good at the first two things, but since my lack of interest in the game has been rising since I was introduced to LoL, I wouldn't be able to say why things were interesting.

This is pretty much my feeling. I appreciate that it's going to take a while to make the decision, and I don't expect a tailored response to everyone who didn't make the cut, but I would appreciate it if we were notified

T_T For one of my entries I wrote about Idra being my idol. Then that week he goes and gets himself banned for 90 days.
Curious to see how many people are applying for this position, so going to add a poll.
Poll: Did you apply?Yes (9) 60% Not telling you (4) 27% No (2) 13% 15 total votes Your vote: Did you apply? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No (Vote): Not telling you
Finally how will we know if we got the job or not? Will it be by email, PM, or is the answer going to be left purposely secret for reasons unknown?

They're terrible.
This isn't a feature article, it's an entire fucking recount. All you do is regurgitate facts and try to make yourself sound fancier than need be. I admit I didn't read the entire clusterfuck that you wrote because I have better things to do with my time but from the snippets I read I didn't think I needed to read more.
I know the point of this thread isn't to bash people but my point stands.

We're dedicated to this website, and in at least my case(if not others), we're checking our emails every single day, waiting for a reply.
It's been two weeks since you posted this. It's been a week since anything truly noteworthy has developed. The people who take interest in this job have already applied. The TSL has concluded in a spectacular fashion, and I simply ask one thing: an update on this thread, preferably including a rough estimate of when we can expect to see our results.
I think I speak for everyone when I request that, and even though I know you have reasons which lie hidden from my eyes, I beg of you to shine a beam of light on our dark, foggy home.

Although I am merely echoing a sentiment that has been oft expressed, I think I speak for everyone who applied when I say that any sort of notice as to whether you even received the application(s) we have sent or not would be lovely. I understand if you are busy, and I don't mean to be pushy, I just really want to be a writer for this site. I check my e-mail as often as I can looking for a reply. Please, for the sake of my sanity, tell me whether I'm good enough or not.
