Nyx is still listed as my best hero with a 70% win rate because of that. I've climbed to 5k as a soloq support like 3 times now on different accounts starting from like 4k ish. I'm a decent support but there are obviously people way better than me. I make a lot of new accounts for dumb reasons. Anyway people in "the trench" are just fucking awful supports and doesn't even understand what a support is supposed to do. What a supports job is in a pub is like the biggest misconception in Dota.
Pretty much every game supports in lower rating: Buy wards or courier. Place wards. Sit behind your carry / do occassional pulls. Keep up the warding, and use your abilites in teamfights. Hope your team is good and win from there.
Supports are there to create pressure (I would say make space but it has become a feeding term now). Like if you aren't top 2 in contributed kills (kills+assists) then you could have played better. If you end the game with mana boots and a magic wand then you failed your job as a support.
I also think Mek is massively overrated in pubs. If you don't have a hero that is like a really good mek carrier(like Chen) then I wouldn't go for it at all. It's an amazing item when the teams do coordinated pushes or whatever but in pubs it's just way better to play gank-oriented. So I think force staff is almost always going to be the better choice. Brown boots + magic stick -> Urn -> mana boots -> Force -> "whatever fits" almost every game.
My philosophy or whatever: If I play mid and a support on my team help kill the enemy mid so I win the lane. I will pretty much win the game from there since I've done it a lot before. However if a support gank for me or not is random and won't happen every game. But if I play support I can make sure I can get my carry + mid fed and we win the game since most mid players/carry players are comfortable playing their roles if they get a good start. The trick is to give them one.
A lot of players say they don't trust their carry/mid player if they are randoms. Well neither do I, so therefore I make sure they get fed so they can't fail.
TLDR: High rating as a support is possible. "Support players" stop slacking and start killing stuff.

I just want a game where my teammates aren't complete fucking retards
that's all
good news, in my next game one of my teammates was actually not only a decent mid, but a decent person too! too bad the rest of the team still wasn't good and we still lost worse than that one team at the superbowl. That's 3 games tonight that were utter shit.
Fuck this game sometimes. I can't. I just can't deal with the kind of gutter shit that I get for teammates sometimes.

holy shit, maiden in my game levels 0-1-2 sits behind the tower while i get harass by ranged offlane, only time she moves her ass is to get out of position and feed. Didn't stack, didn't jungle nothing just sitting at tower sapping my exp. Tell her to jungle / leave the lane / do anything. She decides to feed again basically losing the game by being terrible. Turns out, she was part of a stack and played less than 50 hours. glorious 1-1-4-1 maiden with 0-14-2
well played matchmaking

I wasn't implying that supports can't have high impact (The term "low-impact hero" just skeeves me), but when you "climbed to 5k as a soloq support like 3 times now on different accounts starting from like 4k", the 4k part is a big difference. Even in the mid 3500 I get mostly reasonable games. But the one day I dug up a year-old smurf account (maybe 4, 5 games) and tried to play, it was actually fun to play on account of how ridiculous it is. This was before viewable MMR came out, but I could not imagine it being over the 2000 mark. Soul Ring lich, daedalus KotL, "How do I get the tower to stop shooting me". Even with all the stories you hear about "The trench", it really does get that bad. Makes me feel better about myself though, I'll give it that.

10 win streak down the drain cause lastpick pa with dazzle on safelane got a 17 minute naked bfury vs a solo off weaver and his buddy mid voker was just bad.
QQ
bright site: during the 10 wins i had almost no fulltards and 5 pretty good teams, dota is fun when your team doesnt doom it from the start.

Lost 150 points in 24 hours. We could have just 5 manned and won the last game. They had four carries and got crushed in lanes. But nope, Tinker was determined to win by split pushing. Whenever we grouped to push he split-pushed. Whenever we roshed he split-pushed. Ten minutes in and he managed to reach high ground ONCE, dealing a grand total of 20 damage to the tower. "Tinker, come and push with us". "TINKER, YOU CAN'T SPLITPUSH COME PUSH WITH US". No response. He doesn't even want to win unless we all get wiped in a 4v5 teamfight and he gets to take the rax while they're distracted and be the hero.
It's embarrassing to have someone this braindead in my mmr bracket. Why do you get a sheep if you're not going to fight?

tinker pushing out lanes pressures the enemy extremly hard, most likely the reason why u could make stuff happen as 4 is because tinker kept pushing out lanes while farming and creating ridicilous amounts of space for you. That is what tinker is supposed to do, if there is a fight you can tp there sure but you are not doing anything else than farming and splitpushing unless you have either a huge advantage (aka the game is already over) or the enemy team pushes your towers as 5.
Sounds like tinker played it right to me.

It depends on the context but Tinker being played exclusively as a split pusher is an atrocious way of playing the hero.

Are you for real? We could make stuff happen as 4 because we stomped our lanes (except tinker who went 0-2) and because our opponents picked very badly. Nothing to do with Tinker. He held us back all game.
Did you even read my post? I said Tinker wouldn't come to fights, because he was determined to take the rax by split pushing. This wasn't a matter of pushing the lanes and then tping to fights, this was a matter of him wanting us to four man everything while he destroyed their base in the background. Every time a fight broke out he tped to an empty lane and tried to be a hero. He had no kills and two assists fourty five minutes in. And that's not what creating space means. 'Creating space' means drawing attention away from the carry/mid so they can farm and push out their lanes. When the game is 30 minutes in, and you have one carry versus their four, the absolute last thing in the universe you want to to is 'make space'. They didn't want to gank our carry. He had all the space in the world. They just wanted ten to fifteen minutes of no pressure to farm up some items and survive teamfights. And tinker gave them that.
Okay?

play voker, own mid, gank lanes all fine. we actually dominate game ez win 25 minutes. QQ is clueless leoric flames me cause i tornado the target hes hitting 2 times (one time actually saving a teammate, both times hitting 2+ targets and setting up the emp).

If a support does this in "the trench", their team is already way ahead.
I can't complain too much because I haven't really played very many games, but my first observation is that placement matches are horseshit. I went 7-3 and at the end I thought I was actually playing above my skill level. I think, cool, I must have an ok MMR. Then I finish and it puts me at 2600. After some research, I decide that it has actually decided, not from my placements, obviously, but from the previous 275 games, many played with bad friends and as long as a year ago, that I was 2600. The placements were a pointless formality apparently.
As for the 5 games, I have played so far, I didn't feel like I was the deciding factor in the slightest. 1 loss had a dc'er. The other loss, after announcing I was randoming and immediately randoming Puck, this chucklefuck picks Pudge and nobody picks a support. Of course, Pudge was awful. As for the 3 wins, 1) I owned on BS, but my team was generally better, 2) My team got crushed in the laning phase but apparently Io/Omni/Necro gud teamcomp 3) babysat as Omni while a Brazilian duo crushed and prompted one of my enemies to complain about his teammates being French. So, yeah, it's been fun so far.
On the bright side, I don't think your 'performance' has a huge impact on your points, it mostly just seems to be ~25.

Holy crap why is everyone so selfish. Guy last picks invoker when we already have a mid, then he goes offlane and farms midas first (which takes him 15 minutes to get), then feeds like crazy. Like, how can we ever win with that pick.

invoker is such an overrated hero and people think he is OP, but he really is´nt. you can see that on his win %. when the prople started to hype him, his overall win% also dropped dramatically...
people jsut dont get it. they only pick what they see in pro-games, but they dont understand anything about this game. every hero is strong, if you have the right lineup. EVERY HERO!

Team picks three more cores after I've picked Ember Spirit leaving one poor crystal maiden to support. Then our lone druid and bristleback both get a late midas while the enemy axe goes 7-0. We lose mid raxs early.
We still win but fucking kupo. :D

Ganking a lot as support is nice in theory, but in my shitty 3k, the number 1 response is:"GTFO". and 0 co-operation. "wtf, go support top","report",etc. Doesn't matter if they are 0-10 in the lane. And half the times you get those early kills, it is all for nothing.
