It's basic logic. Either you are a better contribution to your team than the average teammate at that bracket, and then you move up in ranks in the long run, or you represent about the same amount of contribution the the teams sucess as your average teammate and stay at that bracket. MMR hell makes zero sense, support or otherwise, solo queue or not.

The most potent late-game supports are like VS, Windrunner, Warlock, SD. The former three because they can easily transition into semi-carries and SD because he has very well scaling abilities (VS has these as well). Silencer maybe, I find that hero too boring to play. Anyways, there's no real reason to pick a hero because they have the strongest lategame/level 25 in pubs because those tend to be decided in the early-mid game. You'll probably have better luck picking Tide than you will shadow demon.

Nyx, Magnus, Bane, Enigma are all quite good but they aren't the position 5 supports you seem to favor.
