but I thought that in order to fairly judge CPU's you needed to go down to silly low settings in order to find out what wins when the GPU plays no part. You do, sometimes. It's better to test the games that are CPU heavy enough for you not to have to do that, though. I gave a short list above :D also 1.4v sounds too high for skylake @4.6 - they seem better than that

skylake has gotten 4.6/4.7s generally at 1.4v as far as I can tell cyro unless you've seen different (this is talking about air setups with high end coolers)

That picture you posted with a heavily overclocked broadwell versus a mildly overclocked skylake isn't really that terribly exciting Broadwell doesn't clock as high as Skylake. The sc2 pic i posted was with broadwell @4.5ghz vs skylake @4.7, which is more than fair. Also HT on a core core CPU doesn't affect sc2 at all there have definately been conflicting reviews for skylake/broadwell, especially when different RAM speeds are used - but i'd rather have a 6600k/6700k than broadwell equivelant on a new system that's why it's better to test the CPU monsters like sc2, ksp, WoW, total war, ashes of the singularity and such which will be CPU bound hard without having to use a tiny resolution and reduced settings It's not really that sites don't test sc2 - though they really should - it's more so a general lack of testing CPU bound games. There are a lot of reviews testing mostly or almost entirely gpu limited games, which means either you need low res/settings benchmarks to show a difference between CPU's (4k and MSAA on a 980 won't show shit, linustechtips) or you won't see a difference at all. I just gave a short list there but there are more

But I'm betting on being able to overclock. http://www.legitreviews.com/crucial-ballistix-sport-ddr4-2400mhz-32gb-memory-kit-review_151873/3 I'm honestly a bit clueless about RAM so i just got a kit which was well priced and had >relatively< high frequency we'll see, i guess edit: either way, my jump from a stock i5 4670 on a B85 board to a 6600k with a Z170 board was just to get a feeling of overclocking and how all of that works. it was tempting to mess around with blck overclocking on the B85 but I wasn't in the mood to damage anything or risk doing so that processor will go to my sibling who wanted to build a new computer; win / win :D

HF Incog :D i'l probably join with skylake around the first half of next month. Considering doing siliconlottery pre-binned and even pre-delidded chip because 2.5 - 5% performance and better temps would be significant with the small margins coming from a 4.5ghz 4770k

Also, I saw Cyro's post about RAM, so I guess I should get something better there? Can you suggest something specific?

@exchill just whatever has small heatspreaders (they're mostly dumb asthetic things that perform little to no function especially with ddr4, but can block CPU coolers from being installed if they're too big) and is at a decent clock speed out of the box unless you're a more advanced tweaker, 3000c15 is usually good. Not high end, but something that's actually solid to buy unlike 2133 c15

Since I only need 2 RAM slots, can I also use the second and the fourth? Does it make any difference in comparison to using the first and the third slot, for example? EDIT: I keep finding solutions for the questions I ask here. Should search better before I post the questions. According to the motherboard guide it's even recommended to use the second and fourth slot.

well I talked about it a bit on oc.net and sin from sin's hardware himself told me that vrm count isn't that super important anymore compared to before. so i ended up going with a Z170M-D3H just because gigabyte have a good reputation for bang for buck and i had no idea what else to get.

I just check an Noctua's website (I'm getting the Noctua NH U14S) and it might block the first RAM slot. They should only block the RAM that have too tall things sticking out the top AFAIK. The exact measurement depends on the heatsink and RAM something like this is just silly ![]() think yours are fine, but not sure
