Should I upgrade from 1333mhz to 1600 or 1866mhz? I think 40€ for 4GB (ddr3 is already >5 yrs old) is espensive.
I only play Blizzard games. I was thinking about to buy a new pc, but why if the current one works well?

Some CPU's get way higher memory performance and memory performance gains from faster RAM than others. You can put the same RAM on an fx8350 and a 4570k and get ~1.5x (or even higher) memory speeds on the Haswell system. That plays a part in when memory speed helps and doesn't help - if the memory controller can't get much more performance out of it, there's nothing to gain. Haswell and Skylake are excellent there, they can use very fast memory and benefit a lot from it

If yes, what about DS/SS or is useless? Do I need some change at BIOS? My motherboard can use 8GB RAM too. Win7 64. Sorry for noob questions.

Anyway, I have come up with a random router (www.amazon.co.uk), but I'm not sure if it'll be enough. Ideally, I wouldn't like to spend more than 50 GBP. I've heard about Netgear Nighthawk x4, but it seems too expensive and probably too strong for that scenario anyway. I could also buy a router from here: http://most.bg/catalogsearch/result/?q=router (sorry it's in Bulgarian but models are listed in English) but Amazon and Scan UK are also an option. If you pick the Bulgarian website, price could be up to 138 which is equivalent to 50 GBP. Edit 2: Ethernet cable should be avoided if possible. I know it's the best internet connection you can get, but it's not convenient in this case. Edit 3: The router doesn't have to support speed more than 100 mbits. This should be enough for the time being.

a cheap aluminium foil can also be used to reflect wifi signal that's going opposite to your mom's room. my dormitory used them everywhere to redirect wifi from empty hallways into rooms. a more exotic way is to use wall outlet routers, but they are expensive and often not reliable. if your mom is using a cheap usb wifi receiver or laptop's internal wifi card, getting a better wifi card can help too. this may be the easiest and most effective solution.

I'm trying to help my friend with a new comp. Could you please comment on my idea for a pc and answer a few questions? Budget etc: + Show Spoiler + What is your budget? $1000-$1500 pre tax/shipping What is your monitor's native resolution? 1080p What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Ultra. Marvel Heroes for the main part What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Video Editing Do you intend to overclock? No Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Never Do you need an operating system? Yes Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. He's had problems with overheating in the past, and his room can get quite hot so I'm a bit worried about that. What country will you be buying your parts in? Canada If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. I'll be ordering everything through NCIX. Build: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/cZvdQ7 He currently uses Phenom II 955 with a GTX 660, no SSD. I found it hard to find a nicely priced HSF on NCIX so ended up with the NH-D14, as heat's been a problem in the past I'd much rather have overkill than under. I'm wondering if it's still too much, and if case air flow might be a problem as I hear that style of GPU is quite dependent on it. Also wondering if the parts and prices are fine, I'm underbudget but overspending is overspending. Any and all comments and criticisms are welcome. Thanks

My parents had the same issue and for them the solution was a second router at a different spot instead of a single stronger one. How easy is it to tell a second router to get internet from the first one? Do you just connect them by ethernet cable? Do non-ISP routers have some option which says 'act as a relay' or something? I've not used a second router before. I suppose they're connected by ethernet, then the second router has an independent network which the laptop can connect to. Is that how it is supposed to work?

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($279.95 @ NCIX) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($98.38 @ Newegg Canada) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97M-HD3 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($109.00 @ NCIX) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($66.98 @ NCIX) Storage: Crucial BX100 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($119.99 @ NCIX) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($67.99 @ NCIX) Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card ($429.99 @ NCIX) Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout ATX Mid Tower Case ($94.99 @ NCIX) Power Supply: SeaSonic 450W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($84.99 @ NCIX) Optical Drive: LG GH24NSC0 DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ NCIX) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 OEM (64-bit) Total: $1370.25 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-08-11 18:38 EDT-0400 So, my initial thought is that the i5-4690 is a non-overclockable CPU. Although you might want a custom heatsink anyways, you probably want a cheaper one like a 212 evo or something. Spending $70 on a heatsink is something people do when they plan to overclock the CPU and get higher performance at the cost of more heat. The 4690K is great for this and is what I use at home. I was able to hit 4.2 effortlessly with it, and you can probably get higher with good stability if you're spending that much on a heatsink. I hit 4.2 with a 212 evo and suffer no heat issues. I was gonna suggest you could ge the 970 for cheaper (it's like $350 here in the states) but it looks like it's hard to get in canada. In terms of SSDs, I've found Intel SSDs to be reasonably fast and unfailingly reliable. Go with what works for you though. 8gb is enough for gaming, but it's possible 16 will be what you need for video editing. I am not familiar with video editing and the memory requirements. No other comments.

still maybe worth it for performance in the future if OC is possibility and you're buying a cooler anyway

Is there actually a pretty big performance gain with skylake? Seems to add a fair bit of costs with the CPU/z170 MB/DDR4 RAM, though I guess the RAM doesn't add much cost. The cooler's mainly just because I'm worried about temps, I figure it's overkill but I generally tend to underdo the cooling. Maybe just a stock cooler and an extra couple case fans would be safe? Or maybe a lower end cooler like a hyper 212. His room can get pretty hot though.

Is there actually a pretty big performance gain with skylake? ~10%, would be more for OC capability and to have new platform instead of 26 month old stuff Maybe just a stock cooler and an extra couple case fans would be safe? case fans barely impact cpu temperatures with a weak cpu cooler unless you have something else heating up your case that isn't handled properly (like a high powered graphics card) - just a low end but better than stock cooler should be fine. How hot is pretty hot? I've seen people with ambients everywhere from about 12c to 40c

Room temp prob get up around ~30c. Was more worried about case temps, wouldn't the GTX 970 heat up the case a fair bit too?
