I thought GTX 750 Ti and 750 was 28nm Maxwell?
That's what i said :D
These are 28nm Maxwell
Kinda excited to see what performance/efficiency/price changes come with 28/20nm maxwell
NDA lifts at midnight fyi.
Every time there's an NDA, it uses a different midnight lol

He has a 17 inch monitor (1600x900 I think) and is wondering if it's possible to run dual monitors with different resolutions. I built a computer successfully once before so I'm fairly confident I could do it again but I did not overlock. It seems newbies can handle with instructions so I want to try it if it is so. He'll be playing mostly SCII LoL some dota2 and csgo, but wants the computer to run recent games at high settings, if possible. Requirements in format: + Show Spoiler +What is your budget? $800-1000, possibly going to 1200 (for only parts inside a case)
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1600x900, looking for second monitor to dual-monitor if possible with old monitor
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? SCII, LoL, Dota2, CSGO, possibly recent games at high quality
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? office work mostly
Do you intend to overclock? if easy enough with instructions
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? if needed or warranted

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? none needed, and will be bought separately from the budget if needed
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. none

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Nearby Fry's and Microcenter
So I chose the high-end gamer sample build and am thinking
i5 4670k Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP Samsung 840 EVO 250GB WD Blue 500GB Roswill Capstone 450W (modular) Thermalright True Spirit 140
But the G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x4GB 2133MHz is out of stock on Newegg and costs $94 on Amazon. How does this one compare? Or do you guys have any other recommentations?
The ASUS GTX 770 2GB DirectCu II is out of stock as well on Newegg. I can't find any around the $310 mark. Is this just a really popular card and I should wait until its restocked or is there another comparable card I can buy?
I haven't decided on a case yet. Also I never bought any computer parts from amazon. Is it reliable?
EDIT: oh if you guys know any great deals on monitors I'd appreciate any tips.
|
wtf i5 4670k is $180 in microcenter if I buy in store (which I will) how come it's so much cheaper?
|
It's because it's in-store only, they're probably banking on the fact that individuals will buy their other overpriced products with them. If you're buying the processor from Microcenter than you should buy the motherboard from them as well due to combo pricing.
Not a good idea to buy a Rosewill (a Newegg brand) product from Amazon.
The RAM kit is very slightly worse, you won't notice it if you're not benchmarking.
Radeons went up quite a bit due to the mining craze going on atm. There are some GTX 770 around the $330 mark.
|
Are these two GTX 770 comparable to the the Radeon one I linked before? Gigabyte EVGA
Graphics card seems even more confusing that other parts. Is the mining craze referring to bitcoin mining? Is there a short answer to why radeon cards are better than others for that?
As for the mobo if I buy from microcenter with the processor, should I find the reliable brand of cheapest Z87 boards?
|

$530 for a 280x LOL - MSRP for the 290 (which is way more powerful, 1.5x-ish) is $400..
that's beyond silly
Yes, 680/770/280x/7970 are the same tier
Mobo to get depends on microcenter deals
Is the mining craze referring to bitcoin mining? Is there a short answer to why radeon cards are better than others for that?
Altcoins mainly, (so etc litecoin, dogecoin)
Radeon GPU's are the most cost effective solution for mining, so they're used. Thus prices have inflated by >50% across the board on most of their GPU's instead of natural price dropping over time that happened with the 7000 series etc. It's a joke to buy basically anything radeon in the US right now for gaming purposes
|
Ah so on microcenter's site you can't go to the processor and find bundles like newegg but have to search separately.
So I can get Asus for $150 (135 with MIR), Gigabyte for $170 (160 with MIR), Another Asus for $125 (115 with MIR), AsRock for $130 (120 with MIR) or MSI for $85 (70 with MIR). Which one should I get? They all get 30 off standalone price if I combo with 4670k.

Why pay $370 for that 770 when there's another one for $340? Both of them are locked at 1.212v anyway; they'll perform the same. It's not even like you're paying more for a better cooler/noise profile etc, they're basically the same thing
As for mobo.. Any aside from the cheap MSI. It comes down to stuff like onboard audio honestly, little details like that. Hard to pick them apart without google-fu or knowing more intricate details that i can never remember
|
Ah I assume you're referring to the Asus one. I chose EVGA because of the guide said it had best customer support but since I'm going to buy it locally anyway it shouldn't be too big a problem?
EDIT: would you know if the the average person be able to notice a difference in audio among those cards? I heard onboard audio has now made soundcards pretty much moot.

I meant this one, since you linked it in your own post - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125463
There is an audible difference between the different integrated audio if you have at all decent audio equipment. If you're not an audiophile, you probably won't miss what you don't have, but i'm not actually sure how significant it is on say $30, or $100 headphones

Is there a big difference between the Asus one and the Gigabyte one?
|
Not much for the typical user. Gigabyte is clocked higher by default.
The Gigabyte card is almost 12 inches long (as opposed to 10.5" of most other GTX 770's) so if you're buying the Gigabyte and a cheapass case, just make sure it fits.

Actual clocks, even with pre-set base and boost clocks, are quite random. They can vary by as much as like 100mhz sample-to-sample. All of the cards use 1.2v base and can use 1.212v in software (to my knowledge)
Windforce 770 is specced for guaranteed 1189 boost, yet i've never seen mine below 1254 and it's hit 1293 in a few softwares
![[image loading]](http://media.bestofmicro.com/9/L/386553/original/Overclocking-02.png)
1280, 1293, 1306 are clock speed steps on boost (it won't go to anything between them) so we just have silicon lottery here and every card is 1 notch up/down from the others
|
Maxwell, very impressive. I've been waiting for so long for a card that doesn't suck at gaming and doesn't need PCIe connectors.
|
Let me get this straight. Maxell is the successor of Kepler, but they both use 28 nm.
The 880s and shit like that that will come out this summer, those will be Maxell on 20 nm or not?
|
Yes, 20nm Maxwell will come out later in the year.

Decided to go with Asus video card since I can buy locally and looks like my cases options will be limited with the gigabyte card. Can't quite decide on a case. I don't want it windowed to have any lights leaking out. Among Arc midi R2, R4, and XL R2 I can't decide which one to get. Do you guys have any personal experience with any cases and have a recommendation? The computer is likely going to be used where others will be sleeping so if one has great sound reduction so it'll be worth the extra $ spent.

EDIT: also the link to WD Blue 500GB on the sample builds part is 404'd so you might want to update it.
|
Define series is sound-dampening while the Arc series is air-flow oriented. Both are excellent series of cases.
NZXT H440 is a new case that's also sound-dampening (and amazing) and not much more expensive than the Define R4.
Arc Midi R2 has a tinted window by default so.. if you don't want a window than that rules out the Arc Midi R2. Define R4 has a window variant and a non-window variant. XL R2 isn't necessary unless you want a big case for lots of HDDs or do an enthusiast build sometime in the future.
